A couple of days fi shing in the 

Coromandel may prove very expensive 

for a young Te Kuiti man and 

his two mates. 

The three were on their way 

home from the peninsula on Monday 

afternoon, boat in tow, when 

the driver fell asleep rounding the 

fi nal curve heading south to the top 

of Taylors Hill and crashed into a 

power pole. 

The crash caused a major power 

outage and properties adjacent to 

the site were damaged by power 

surges and resulting fi res. 

Police say the three men were 

lucky in a number of respects because 

none were injured and no 

other vehicle became involved. 

The utility continued left and was 

obviously slowed considerably by 

the farm hedge before the head-on 

collision. 

All the same the vehicle suffered 

extensive damage to the passenger 

side and front. 

Overhead lines fell onto the vehicle 

and around the crash site, necessitating 

closure of the southbound

The crash victims and emergency 

workers played the waiting game 

for about an hour until Waipa Networks 

staff made sure the area was 

safe. 

Meanwhile southbound traffi c 

was detoured onto Te Rahu Road 

until the site was cleared, about an 

hour-and-a-half after the 2.20pm 

crash. 

Police say if the driver had veered 

across the two oncoming lanes, not 

had so much speed wiped off by the 

hedge or had fl ipped into the paddock 

the human cost could have 

been much greater. 

They say that stretch of road has 

shown many times it can be dangerous 

to motorists safety, and even 

fatal. 

Police say the message from the 

crash is simple: Don’t drive tired. 

Recommended procedures for long 

trips, especially after tiring activities, 

are stopping for regular breaks 

for food, drink and rests and sharing 

the driving responsibilities.

11kV into 240 doesn’t go 

Insurance assessors have been out in force following 

Monday afternoon’s crash, not to check on the 

driver’s vehicle and boat, but nearby houses and 

businesses. 

The impact of the crash caused the 11kV lines 

to clash with the low voltage lines, which caused 

a surge to several properties in the vicinity, as 

well as knocking out power to approximately 3000 

customer installations. 

As well as restoring power to those customers, 

Waipa Networks enlisted the assistance of a local 

electrician and inspector to help assess the surge 

damage to properties in the vicinity of the accident. 

Bill and Carolyn Yarndley are hoping their microwave, 

fax, washing machine, computer and monitor 

are all fi xable. 

Their meter box blew all its fuses, but not before 

the high voltage surge travelled down a few lines 

causing havoc. 

But the couple are not as bad off as their tenants 

in the older roadside cottage. 

The internal meter box blew apart, sending out a 

fi reball and threatening to catch the cottage alight. 

Mr Yarndley is certain if the tenants had not been 

home, then the outcome would have been far worse. 

He is also certain if anyone had been near the 

meter box, then they would have been seriously 

injured. 

The power surge blew the pole fuse off the pole, 

the lines off the house and ‘fried’ the cottage’s wiring. 

No-one is certain what appliances will be damaged. 

Mr Yarndley says the cottage needs a complete 

rewire. 

Friends of his tenants had just arrived from Auckland 

about fi ve minutes before the crash to stay for 

a few days. 

They are all braving the lack of power, using their 

landlords’ spare en suite facilities and a loaned generator 

to get through. 

Over the road cows on Paul and Donna Davies’ 

farm went without their evening milking as electricians 

fi xed their dairy shed. 

The surge blew the meter boxes on the new shed, 

old shed and worker’s cottage. Sparks from the new 

shed explosion set fi re to the rubbish pile. 

It also wrecked the mains electric fence unit. 

Mr Davies says his workers have lots of appliances 

that also need repairing after they received 

the bolt of high voltage electricity. 

He says Waipa Networks already had a repair to 

a pole on his property to complete after it was taken

New era for 

Kiwi charities 

Minister for the Community 

and Voluntary Sector, 

Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, 

today said that the launch of 

the Charities Register marks 

the beginning of a new era for 

charities in New Zealand. 

From today, the Charities 

Commission will begin 

to receive applications 

for registration under 

the Charities Act 2005. 

Registration is voluntary. 

“The new Charities 

Register will lead to the 

increased transparency of 

charitable organisations and 

will help to strengthen the 

public’s trust and confi dence 

in the charitable sector,” said 

Ms Laban. 

“It will do this by ensuring 

that only genuine charities 

gain registration - that is, 

those organisations who 

advance religion, relieve 

poverty or have a purpose 

that is otherwise benefi cial to 

the community as their main

The Charities Register will 

also improve the quality and 

accessibility of information 

about the charitable sector.

Love of Bob Dylan has big 

infl uence on PhD student

Members of the Quin 

family don’t have much 

say about listening to 

Bob Dylan - Pat is a fanatical 

fan. 

His love of the American 

icon is only matched 

by his brother-in-law 

Brian Ashwell, so growing 

with her father and 

uncle’s Dylan passion 

gave a young Esther 

Jane Harcourt (nee 

Quin) no chance of 

avoiding the man’s great 

body of work. 

But that love and 

knowledge led to what 

is being heralded as 

‘ground-breaking’ 

research by Mrs Harcourt 

for her Doctor of 

Philosophy (in German) 

with her thesis ‘Bertolt 

Brecht and Bob Dylan 

Infl uence and Identity’. 

Mrs Harcourt graduated 

from Victoria 

University in December 

last year. 

The family has 

sharemilked in the 

region for a number of 

years, meaning Esther 

Jane and her siblings 

attended a number 

of rural schools. Esther 

Jane started at 

Kaipaki School, then 

went to Ohaupo and Te 

Awamutu Intermediate. 

When the family 

purchased a farm at Te 

Pahu she attended 

Hamilton Girl’s High 

School. 

In her fi nal year she 

went on an exchange 

to Germany, where 

she learnt about noted 

playwright and minstrel 

Bertolt Brecht.

During her research 

into his life and works 

she noted a strong parallel 

with Bob Dylan. 

Mrs Harcourt had 

endured many long car 

trips to her father’s favourite 

Dylan tapes, and 

many visits to Uncle 

Brian’s - who boasted 

every vinyl album Dylan 

ever released, so she had 

tremendous knowledge 

of his music and life. 

She had completed her 

honours degree in English 

and German and 

planned to complete the 

masters degree using 

this research - but found 

she had so much material 

she upgraded to the 

PhD, with the backing 

of both her English and 

German professors. 

And it was during the 

extensive research she 

discovered how much 

of an infl uence the German 

had been on the 

American. 

She discovered the 

words of ‘Times They Are 

A Changin’ were similar 

to Brecht’s ‘Song of the 

Moldau’ from a show 

Dylan was known to 

have attended - ‘Brecht 

on Brecht’. And Brecht 

himself gets a mention 

in Dylan’s song - ‘With 

the sounds of Francois 

Villon echoin’ through 

my mad streets/as I 

stumble on lost cigars of 

Bertolt Brecht.’ 

While researching this 

link on a scholarship trip 

to New York, where she 

also delivered a paper at 

the University of South 

Carolina, she received 

confi rmation from none 

other than Dylan’s 

former girlfriend Suzi 

Rotolo.

Jim Irvine cheerfully 

greets many of 

his customers by name 

while he is fi lling their 

prescriptions. 

Chances are he’s not 

only looked after them 

for many years, he’s 

probably looked after 

their parents or children 

as well. 

But after 31½ years 

running ‘Irvine’s Pharmacy’ 

on Alexandra 

Street he’s calling it a 

day. 

“The business has 

been on the market for 

some time, but there’s 

been no real interest, so 

it’s time to move on. 

“It’s a bit sad to be 

saying goodbye, but 

that’s life.” 

Mr Irvine initially 

purchased the pharmacy 

in 1975 from Tim 

Toswill. 

He had earlier completed 

his four year apprenticeship, 

done some 

relieving for other local 

chemists and worked 

several years as a commercial 

traveller. 

“When I took over 

there was no weekend 

trading, no computerised 

system, none of 

the part charges etc on 

prescriptions we have 

today. 

“We used to mix many 

of the prescriptions by 

hand as well, but that’s 

not allowed today.” 

Mr Irvine says many 

of the medicines prescribed 

then are no 

longer in use, while 

there are many more 

today that had not even 

been heard of when he 

started.

break and was only 

gone days when the 

chemist was the target 

of an aggravated robbery. 

But, reliever Robin 

Bennett and Mr Irvine’s 

wife Marjorie decided 

not to let him know 

anything about it. 

“It wasn’t until a 

friend picked him up 

at the airport that he 

discovered what had 

happened.” 

When Mr Irvine got 

into the car he saw a 

copy of the Courier on 

the seat. 

“My mate said I 

might recognise something 

inside.” 

It was then Mr Irvine 

read about the fi rearm

wielding robber and the 

chaos it caused. 

While he missed that 

event, there are plenty 

of other times he has 

been called out by police 

in the early hours 

of the morning. 

“That means coming 

down to clean up the 

broken glass, work out 

what‘s been taken and 

ringing a friendly builder 

to come and board up 

the shop.” 

He certainly won’t 

be missing those early 

morning calls, but he 

will be missing all the 

contact with customers. 

“It’s been a central 

part of my life, but 

that’s now come to a 

close. 

“I’ll be sorting out for 

a few weeks, then I get 

to do what I like, when I 

like, for a change!”

Mechanical problems robbed NZ1 Toby 

Lardelli and Mike Bond of victory in the 

North Island sidecar championships at Mc- 

Donald’s Kihikihi Speedway. 

Having posted maximum points from four 

straight wins on Sunday, the Gisborne combination 

needed only to fi nish third to secure 

one point in the fi fth and fi nal heat to take 

the title. 

But they had to race on bike 8, kindly 

loaned to them by their Gisborne mates, 

after their own machine failed to fi re. 

Lardelli and Bond looked headed for the 

third placing they required until making a 

mess of the last corner and fi nishing fourth. 

The error was simply a result of the best 

combination in New Zealand being unfamiliar 

with their borrowed bike’s set up. 

They fi nished the competition in a threeway 

tie for fi rst, necessitating a run-off with 

19v John Hannon/Jason Wallis and 15v 

Craig Scott/Tony Hirini, both of Wanganui.

Kihikihi Speedway is hosting the North Island 

streetstocks this coming Sunday, 1pm. 

A 26-strong fi eld will vie for honours over 

three 15-lap races. The winner will be decided 

on accumulated points. 

Both NZ1 Nigel Patterson and Kihikihi’s 

NZ2 Steve De Malmanche have entered.

The Kawhia Kai Festival this 

weekend is expected to draw thousands 

of visitors from the Tainui 

waka area, as well as from further

Spokesperson Lloyd Whiu says 

the Kai Festival is unique.

and celebrates the starting place of 

all people of Tainui. Coming to the 

festival is like a mini pilgrimage for

Alexandra Hotel will be 

written on Saturday night 

with the grand re-opening 

of the establishment 

following extensive refurbishment. 

As with the re-opening 

in 1932, after the hotel 

was destroyed by fi re, the 

offi cial ceremony will be 

carried out by the Mayor.

Golfers teeing off 

for Freeman Court 


Golfers are being encouraged 

to ‘come to the party’ helping 

refurbish Freeman Court. 

An 18 hole ambrose charity 

tournament is being held at Te 

Awamutu Golf Club on Sunday, 

February 11, with all proceeds 

going to the refurbishment fund. 

Freeman Court trust board 

member Mark Strack is organising 

the tournament in conjunction 

with Te Awamutu Golf 

Club. 

“Encourage your colleagues to 

participate in this very worthwhile 

event and support your 

community,” says Mrs Strack. 

She asks players to arrange 

their own groups of four or eight. 

There is a starting sheet in the 

golf shop. 

Entry fee is $15 and there are 

some excellent prizes and raffl 

es, all sponsored by businesses 

- many of whom support Freeman 

Court. 

Mrs Strack says she is indebted 

to the golf club, who have 

‘hired’ the course out for the day 

at no-charge. 

“Our fundraising barometer at 

Freeman Court is steadily growing 

but we still have a long way 

to go to reach our target.”

Lee pulls off dressage 

selection trial double 

Trisha Lee won both sections of the senior 

selection trial to represent Waikato at the 

New Zealand Pony Club Dressage Championships. 

The daughter of local racing identity Ray 

Lee is keen to build on this purple patch of 

form at the nationals in Taupo on February 

3-4. 

Three Te Awamutu riders, in all, gained entry 

into the Waikato team. 

Eleven-year-old Kerri-Ann Hedley won the 

junior section trial, while Libby Baron placed 

second behind Lee in the senior section to 

complete a Te Awamutu quinella. 

Six team members and two travelling reserves 

were named after the completion of the 

trials at Waipa Equestrian Park, Kihikihi. 

The other three riders to make the team are 

Emma Turton (Hamilton), Alysha Van Dyk 

(Putaruru) and Terrence Hayes (Hamilton). 

The reserves are Nick Brooks (Cambridge) 

and Jeanette Edwards (Ngaruawahia) 

Waikato have been the bridesmaids at the 

national competition several times in recent 

years. 

Lee is optimistic that this year’s Mooloo 

team can go one better and take the title. 

Although Waikato are fi elding a new-look 

junior team, all the senior riders have previous 

experience competing at the nationals. 

Lee and Baron are both riding elementary 

level horses, and Turton a medium level horse 

- making them a tough combination to beat. 

CLASH OF EVENTS 

Waikato Area Pony Club staged the interclub 

team dressage competition on the same 

day as the selection trial. 

Nine teams entered from Te Kuiti in the 

south to Waingaro in the north. 

Matamata took the honours from Koromatua, 

with Leamington third and Hamilton 

East fourth. 

The teams event is often the fi rst taste of 

dressage competition for pony club riders. 

Experienced dressage riders from each club 

have used this day, in the past, to mentor 

younger, less experienced riders in the fi ner 

points of dressage competition. 

The new format prevented that from happening 

this year.
