Fishing mates lucky
EMERGENCY workers and crash victims play the waiting game as live
wires lie on and around the vehicle at the scene of Monday afternoon’s
crash. 032071AD
By Dean Taylor
A couple of days fi shing in the
Coromandel may prove very expensive
for a young Te Kuiti man and
his two mates.
The three were on their way
home from the peninsula on Monday
afternoon, boat in tow, when
the driver fell asleep rounding the
fi nal curve heading south to the top
of Taylors Hill and crashed into a
power pole.
The crash caused a major power
outage and properties adjacent to
the site were damaged by power
surges and resulting fi res.
Police say the three men were
lucky in a number of respects because
none were injured and no
other vehicle became involved.
The utility continued left and was
obviously slowed considerably by
the farm hedge before the head-on
collision.
All the same the vehicle suffered
extensive damage to the passenger
side and front.
Overhead lines fell onto the vehicle
and around the crash site, necessitating
closure of the southbound
lane to provide a safety barrier for
emergency workers.
The crash victims and emergency
workers played the waiting game
for about an hour until Waipa Networks
staff made sure the area was
safe.
Meanwhile southbound traffi c
was detoured onto Te Rahu Road
until the site was cleared, about an
hour-and-a-half after the 2.20pm
crash.
Police say if the driver had veered
across the two oncoming lanes, not
had so much speed wiped off by the
hedge or had fl ipped into the paddock
the human cost could have
been much greater.
They say that stretch of road has
shown many times it can be dangerous
to motorists safety, and even
fatal.
Police say the message from the
crash is simple: Don’t drive tired.
Recommended procedures for long
trips, especially after tiring activities,
are stopping for regular breaks
for food, drink and rests and sharing
the driving responsibilities.
11kV into 240 doesn’t go
Insurance assessors have been out in force following
Monday afternoon’s crash, not to check on the
driver’s vehicle and boat, but nearby houses and
businesses.
The impact of the crash caused the 11kV lines
to clash with the low voltage lines, which caused
a surge to several properties in the vicinity, as
well as knocking out power to approximately 3000
customer installations.
As well as restoring power to those customers,
Waipa Networks enlisted the assistance of a local
electrician and inspector to help assess the surge
damage to properties in the vicinity of the accident.
Bill and Carolyn Yarndley are hoping their microwave,
fax, washing machine, computer and monitor
are all fi xable.
Their meter box blew all its fuses, but not before
the high voltage surge travelled down a few lines
causing havoc.
But the couple are not as bad off as their tenants
in the older roadside cottage.
The internal meter box blew apart, sending out a
fi reball and threatening to catch the cottage alight.
Mr Yarndley is certain if the tenants had not been
home, then the outcome would have been far worse.
He is also certain if anyone had been near the
meter box, then they would have been seriously
injured.
The power surge blew the pole fuse off the pole,
the lines off the house and ‘fried’ the cottage’s wiring.
No-one is certain what appliances will be damaged.
Mr Yarndley says the cottage needs a complete
rewire.
Friends of his tenants had just arrived from Auckland
about fi ve minutes before the crash to stay for
a few days.
They are all braving the lack of power, using their
landlords’ spare en suite facilities and a loaned generator
to get through.
Over the road cows on Paul and Donna Davies’
farm went without their evening milking as electricians
fi xed their dairy shed.
The surge blew the meter boxes on the new shed,
old shed and worker’s cottage. Sparks from the new
shed explosion set fi re to the rubbish pile.
It also wrecked the mains electric fence unit.
Mr Davies says his workers have lots of appliances
that also need repairing after they received
the bolt of high voltage electricity.
He says Waipa Networks already had a repair to
a pole on his property to complete after it was taken
out by another car around Christmas. ALL services were out in force at Monday’s crash. 032072AD
New era for
Kiwi charities
Minister for the Community
and Voluntary Sector,
Luamanuvao Winnie Laban,
today said that the launch of
the Charities Register marks
the beginning of a new era for
charities in New Zealand.
From today, the Charities
Commission will begin
to receive applications
for registration under
the Charities Act 2005.
Registration is voluntary.
“The new Charities
Register will lead to the
increased transparency of
charitable organisations and
will help to strengthen the
public’s trust and confi dence
in the charitable sector,” said
Ms Laban.
“It will do this by ensuring
that only genuine charities
gain registration - that is,
those organisations who
advance religion, relieve
poverty or have a purpose
that is otherwise benefi cial to
the community as their main
purpose.”
The Charities Register will
also improve the quality and
accessibility of information
about the charitable sector.
“Not only will the Register
give New Zealanders the
ability to make well-informed
decisions about the charities
they wish to support, but
it’s also good news for the
charities themselves.”
“Benefi ts of registration
include income tax and gift
duty exemption, a greater
level of public trust and
confi dence, representation at
Post support message
for Team New Zealand
New Zealanders can send messages
of support to Emirates Team New
Zealand on New Zealand’s biggest
postcard for the launch of the team’s
America’s Cup campaign.
The postcard is made up of 372
pieces that will be distributed
throughout New Zealand PostShops
as part of the ‘Let’s Bring it Home’
campaign in support of Emirates
Team New Zealand.
The pieces will then be shipped
to the team’s America’s Cup base in
Valencia, Spain to be assembled into
an 114 square metre billboard and
mounted on the side of the team’s
campaign headquarters.
New Zealand Post Group chief
executive John Allen says it’s a
privilege for New Zealand Post to be
involved in this way.
“Like most New Zealanders we
want to help in any way we can.
We felt that by encouraging New
Zealanders to express their sentiments
to the team and supporting
them during the challenge, we were
doing our bit too. We all want the
Cup back.”
Emirates Team New Zealand managing
director Grant Dalton is urging
people to sign the card and support
the team to bring the cup home.
“We would be thrilled to have this
huge billboard on the side of our base
supporting us. We’d love to get as
many messages of support as possible
because we want New Zealanders
to come on this ride with us. Not
only will it be very motivating for the
team, it will tell the world that New
Zealand is a little country with a big
heart.”
The weather resistant puzzle
pieces are available for signing in
New Zealand PostShops until February
Love of Bob Dylan has big
infl uence on PhD student
By Dean Taylor
Members of the Quin
family don’t have much
say about listening to
Bob Dylan - Pat is a fanatical
fan.
His love of the American
icon is only matched
by his brother-in-law
Brian Ashwell, so growing
with her father and
uncle’s Dylan passion
gave a young Esther
Jane Harcourt (nee
Quin) no chance of
avoiding the man’s great
body of work.
But that love and
knowledge led to what
is being heralded as
‘ground-breaking’
research by Mrs Harcourt
for her Doctor of
Philosophy (in German)
with her thesis ‘Bertolt
Brecht and Bob Dylan
Infl uence and Identity’.
Mrs Harcourt graduated
from Victoria
University in December
last year.
The family has
sharemilked in the
region for a number of
years, meaning Esther
Jane and her siblings
attended a number
of rural schools. Esther
Jane started at
Kaipaki School, then
went to Ohaupo and Te
Awamutu Intermediate.
When the family
purchased a farm at Te
Pahu she attended
Hamilton Girl’s High
School.
In her fi nal year she
went on an exchange
to Germany, where
she learnt about noted
playwright and minstrel
Bertolt Brecht.
PhD PRIDE: Te Kawa farmers Pat and Marie-Ann Quin with their eldest
daughter Esther Jane Harcourt at December’s Victoria University
Graduation. Photo supplied.
During her research
into his life and works
she noted a strong parallel
with Bob Dylan.
Mrs Harcourt had
endured many long car
trips to her father’s favourite
Dylan tapes, and
many visits to Uncle
Brian’s - who boasted
every vinyl album Dylan
ever released, so she had
tremendous knowledge
of his music and life.
She had completed her
honours degree in English
and German and
planned to complete the
masters degree using
this research - but found
she had so much material
she upgraded to the
PhD, with the backing
of both her English and
German professors.
And it was during the
extensive research she
discovered how much
of an infl uence the German
had been on the
American.
She discovered the
words of ‘Times They Are
A Changin’ were similar
to Brecht’s ‘Song of the
Moldau’ from a show
Dylan was known to
have attended - ‘Brecht
on Brecht’. And Brecht
himself gets a mention
in Dylan’s song - ‘With
the sounds of Francois
Villon echoin’ through
my mad streets/as I
stumble on lost cigars of
Bertolt Brecht.’
While researching this
link on a scholarship trip
to New York, where she
also delivered a paper at
the University of South
Carolina, she received
confi rmation from none
other than Dylan’s
former girlfriend Suzi
Rotolo.
As one door closes...
By Cathy Asplin
Jim Irvine cheerfully
greets many of
his customers by name
while he is fi lling their
Chances are he’s not
only looked after them
for many years, he’s
probably looked after
their parents or children
as well.
But after 31½ years
running ‘Irvine’s Pharmacy’
on Alexandra
“The business has
been on the market for
some time, but there’s
been no real interest, so
it’s time to move on.
“It’s a bit sad to be
saying goodbye, but
that’s life.”
Mr Irvine initially
purchased the pharmacy
in 1975 from Tim
Toswill.
He had earlier completed
his four year apprenticeship,
done some
chemists and worked
several years as a commercial
“When I took over
there was no weekend
trading, no computerised
system, none of
the part charges etc on
prescriptions we have
today.
“We used to mix many
of the prescriptions by
hand as well, but that’s
not allowed today.”
Mr Irvine says many
of the medicines prescribed
then are no
longer in use, while
there are many more
today that had not even
been heard of when he
started.
Handbag and Sally snatch
North Island sidecar title
NZ1 combination left lamenting on what might have been
NORTH ISLAND champions John Hannon and Jason Wallis (Handbag and
Sally) wave to their fans after clinching the title in a thrilling run-off at
McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedway on Sunday. Elizabeth Bayliss photo
032TC020-07
By Colin Thorsen
Mechanical problems robbed NZ1 Toby
Lardelli and Mike Bond of victory in the
North Island sidecar championships at Mc-
Donald’s Kihikihi Speedway.
Having posted maximum points from four
straight wins on Sunday, the Gisborne combination
needed only to fi nish third to secure
one point in the fi fth and fi nal heat to take
the title.
But they had to race on bike 8, kindly
loaned to them by their Gisborne mates,
after their own machine failed to fi re.
Lardelli and Bond looked headed for the
third placing they required until making a
mess of the last corner and fi nishing fourth.
The error was simply a result of the best
combination in New Zealand being unfamiliar
with their borrowed bike’s set up.
They fi nished the competition in a threeway
tie for fi rst, necessitating a run-off with
19v John Hannon/Jason Wallis and 15v
Craig Scott/Tony Hirini, both of Wanganui.
Hannon and his swinger Wallis (better
known throughout New Zealand speedway
circles as Handbag and Sally) got off to a
fl yer in the four-lap run-off.
They were never headed despite Scott/
Hirini being right on their tail throughout.
Hannon/Wallis looked back to their mighty
form of 2005 when they won the New Zealand
Grand Prix.
Lardelli/Bond had to settle for third.
The event attracted a full fi eld of 16 bikes,
with four of them also locked on equal points
for fourth.
Kihikihi Speedway is hosting the North Island
streetstocks this coming Sunday, 1pm.
A 26-strong fi eld will vie for honours over
three 15-lap races. The winner will be decided
on accumulated points.
Both NZ1 Nigel Patterson and Kihikihi’s
NZ2 Steve De Malmanche have entered.
Other top contenders include Trevor De
Malmanche, Gisborne’s Brenden Gooch and
Aucklanders Mark McNabb and Bill Peat.
Kawhia Kai Festival
The Kawhia Kai Festival this
weekend is expected to draw thousands
of visitors from the Tainui
“It is proudly tangata whenua,
“We love the fact that we bring
thousands of Maori and non-Maori
together here at this time of the
year.
“The Kai Festival keeps going
IN BUSINESS CIRCLES
‘Sweet Cheeks’ offers special mementos
Looking for a lasting
memory of your little
one?
Maybe you have family
overseas and would
like to send them something
special to record
the birth of your new
baby?
Perhaps you are looking
for a unique gift for
a baby shower?
‘Sweet Cheeks’ owner
Stephanie Rush has
just the answer.
Mrs Rush specialises
in creating three dimensional
sculptures of babies
hands and feet.
Using a natural
non-toxic product
a cast is taken
- this is a very
quick process and
captures every
line and detail of
the hand or foot.
The completed
sculptures are then
fi nished in gold or
silver and can be
framed or placed in
a presentation box.
“There are actually
lots of options
- parents can decide
if they want
a hand or foot or
both. They can
select a frame and
mount colour with
an engraved inscription,
they may even have a
photo included with the
sculptures.
“The options are endless
really and it gives a
lasting reminder of how
small your child really
was.”
Some people who live
in New Zealand, but
have parents in other
parts of the world, have
found they are a special
way to mark the birth of
a new grandchild.
“It is also an option to
have a hand sculpture
done of two or more
children.
“They can be framed
together and have a
separate engraved
inscription under each
hand stating the name
and age of each child.
“This is a nice way of
including older children
in the birth of a new
baby.”
Another service growing
in demand is to
have a pregnant ‘belly
cast’ done.
“I usually travel to
their home to do the
cast and then fi nish it
at my place. I can deco-
rate the cast or they can
choose to decorate their
own.
“You can also choose
to have a cast taken of
just the belly instead of
the whole torso. Once
“There are also gift
certifi cates available.
These are a great idea if
you are looking for a gift
that is a little different.
“They can be given as
the birth or the option
to have hand and foot
Another chapter in the
proud history of Pirongia’s
Alexandra Hotel will be
written on Saturday night
with the grand re-opening
of the establishment
following extensive refurbishment.
As with the re-opening
in 1932, after the hotel
was destroyed by fi re, the
offi cial ceremony will be
carried out by the Mayor.
Owners Greg and Cara
O’Connor took over the
Alexandra Hotel in November
2004 and soon
after started planning possible
improvements.
“We were mindful that
the hotel has been a
landmark in Pirongia since
1864 and that it needed to
retain its country pub feel
that fi ts in with the village.
While we were renovating
and updating it, we
didn’t want it to look out
of place.
“We also wanted to
make sure the locals
were comfortable with the
new look. They have been
hugely supportive of the
changes and we thank
them for their input and
their patience throughout
the process.
“We must also thank
our staff who have worked
hard through all the
changes and have continued
to focus on the end
CONGRATULATIONS
CONGRATULATIONS
been involved.
result - a much improved
hotel.”
The owners have
certainly achieved their
initial objectives with the
makeover.
The hotel has been
been extended and refi tted
with modern fi ttings
and fi xtures, but has retained
a welcoming country
atmosphere.
The use of wood and
stone on the exterior
works well, giving it a permanent,
solid look.
Inside there are still
two bars areas - one with
comfortable seating and
dining space, the other essentially
a sports bar complete
with big screen, pool
tables and dart boards.
Both bars have new fl atscreen
televisions .
The current refurbishment
has included a new
kitchen, so inhouse dining
and takeaways are available
for longer periods and
food can also be served
directly to the expanded
garden bar.
The wholesale area
remains, although a new
entrance way will incorporate
historical photos and
details.
These will include the
development (and demise)
of other hotels in
Pirongia and important
events in history, such as
King Tawhiao and his 500
supporters outside the
Alexandra Hotel in 1881
to signify the end of the
Waikato land wars.
Over the years the hotel
has also been the site of
many community events
and meetings such as
the inaugural Mangapiko
Highway Board and the
magistrate’s court.
While the current chang-
es to the Alexandra Hotel
are considerable, the owners
still have more plans in
the pipeline.
“We hope to have another
bar added outside
and we will also be building
a new toilet block.
The old hotel building on
the corner is destined to
eventually become accommodation
for a bed
and breakfast operation.
“But for now we are
Franklin Street. Pirongia, Ph 871 9799
celebrating ‘stage one’ of
the work that has been
completed.”
Opening night festivities
include a formal opening
by Mayor Alan Livingston
at 7pm, with a happy hour
to follow.
The big screen will feature
the fi rst Chiefs game
of the 2007 season, while
local band Greenfi eld will
be playing late into the
night.
Golfers teeing off
for Freeman Court
By Colin Thorsen
Golfers are being encouraged
to ‘come to the party’ helping
refurbish Freeman Court.
An 18 hole ambrose charity
tournament is being held at Te
Awamutu Golf Club on Sunday,
February 11, with all proceeds
going to the refurbishment fund.
Freeman Court trust board
member Mark Strack is organising
the tournament in conjunction
with Te Awamutu Golf
Club.
“Encourage your colleagues to
participate in this very worthwhile
event and support your
community,” says Mrs Strack.
She asks players to arrange
their own groups of four or eight.
There is a starting sheet in the
golf shop.
Entry fee is $15 and there are
some excellent prizes and raffl
es, all sponsored by businesses
- many of whom support Freeman
Court.
Mrs Strack says she is indebted
to the golf club, who have
‘hired’ the course out for the day
at no-charge.
“Our fundraising barometer at
Freeman Court is steadily growing
but we still have a long way
to go to reach our target.”
Funds were boosted by $1080
from the Caroline Eve Fashion
Show held in November.
New Zealand Pony Club Dressage Championships.
The daughter of local racing identity Ray
Lee is keen to build on this purple patch of
form at the nationals in Taupo on February
3-4.
Three Te Awamutu riders, in all, gained entry
into the Waikato team.
Eleven-year-old Kerri-Ann Hedley won the
junior section trial, while Libby Baron placed
second behind Lee in the senior section to
complete a Te Awamutu quinella.
Six team members and two travelling reserves
were named after the completion of the
trials at Waipa Equestrian Park, Kihikihi.
The other three riders to make the team are
Emma Turton (Hamilton), Alysha Van Dyk
(Putaruru) and Terrence Hayes (Hamilton).
The reserves are Nick Brooks (Cambridge)
and Jeanette Edwards (Ngaruawahia)
Waikato have been the bridesmaids at the
national competition several times in recent
years.
Lee is optimistic that this year’s Mooloo
team can go one better and take the title.
Although Waikato are fi elding a new-look
junior team, all the senior riders have previous
experience competing at the nationals.
Lee and Baron are both riding elementary
level horses, and Turton a medium level horse
- making them a tough combination to beat.
CLASH OF EVENTS
Waikato Area Pony Club staged the interclub
team dressage competition on the same
day as the selection trial.
Nine teams entered from Te Kuiti in the
south to Waingaro in the north.
Matamata took the honours from Koromatua,
with Leamington third and Hamilton
East fourth.
The teams event is often the fi rst taste of
dressage competition for pony club riders.
Experienced dressage riders from each club
have used this day, in the past, to mentor
younger, less experienced riders in the fi ner
points of dressage competition.
The new format prevented that from happening
this year.
Win a double pass to see
Tony Christie in Hamilton
Remember the great hits
‘Avenues And Alleyways’
(the theme to TV series The
Protectors), ‘I Did What I Did For
Maria’, ‘Las Vegas’, ‘Don’t
Go Down To Reno’ ?
Who could forget
‘Is This The Way To
Amarillo’?
The man who made them
all famous is Tony Christie
and he’s performing at
the Founder’s Theatre on
February 22. And you could
be there thanks to CDs4nix
(formerly Tracs) as we have
a double pass to give away.
In 1999 Christie performed
vocals on the Jarvis Cocker
penned UK Top Ten hit ‘Walk
Like A Panther’.
Currently he is experiencing
a resurgence in popularity due
to the re-release of ‘Is This The
Way To Amarillo’ in 2002 to
raise money for the Comic Relief
charity,
Christie is proving he has lost
none of his magic, playing to sell
out crowds around the globe.
He is also known for his
unique and distinctive treatment
of other hits such as ‘Daddy Don’t
You Walk So Fast’, ‘Solitaire’ and
‘You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling’.
The Defi nitive Collection is an
ideal way to whet your appetite
for next month’s show.
Supporting Christie
at the Founder’s Theatre
is The Drifters.
With timeless classics
‘Save The Last Dance
For Me’, ‘Under The
Boardwalk’, ‘Saturday
Night At The Movies’
‘Kissing In The Back
Row Of The Movies’, ‘This
Magic Moment’ and ‘Like
Sister And Brother’ the only
question will be what will
they have to leave out!
To be in to win the double
pass simply put your name,
address and daytime contact
number on the back of a standard
sized envelope, address it
to ‘Tony Christie Double Pass
Competition’ and make sure it
reaches our offi ce by 5pm next
Wednesday.
NOFX playing two Kiwi shows
Te Awamutu Courier and
CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give
readers the chance to celebrate
NOFX playing Auckland
and Wellington by winning
a copy of their CD ‘Wolves
in Wolves Clothing’.
They head to Wellington
on March 2 then Auckland’s
Powerstation on
Saturday, March 3.
It’s been six long years
since NOFX toured the
land of the long white
cloud, but ask anyone
that’s seen NOFX - the
wait will be well worth
it...
Don’t know who NOFX
are? Never heard of Fat
Mike?
Here’s some background:
NOFX was formed 1983
and has since released 10
studio full lengths, about six EPs,
and a metric ton of 7”s. They’ve
somehow managed to sell over
six million records worldwide,
which is an unprecedented feat
for an independent band.
They’re true pioneers of the
genre as they’ve toured all but
one continent (no Antarctica yet,
sorry). No band has achieved
Friday Night
till late
Phone 871 4768
more success independently, no
band has turned down major
labels and MTV more often.
After years of working with Epitaph
records, the band switched
to vocalist Fat Mike’s own imprint
(Fat Wreck Chords).
Thus began 2003’s ‘War On
Errorism’, one of their most successful
releases yet, and a record
that catapulted the band into the
mainstream of political press:
Newsweek, CNN, NY Times, etc.
Louie
032TC004-07
After that was yet another
crackpot scheme: the band has
been discussing playing 30
shows in 30 countries
where they’ve never sold
any records.
The fi nal frontiers of
touring - from Bolivia
to Burma - and they’re
gonna capture it all on
fi lm. No-one would expect
that stuff to end up
at Cannes. Sundance
maybe? Who knows? ..
what we do know is that
NOFX are stopping by
for two shows in March!
We also know that these
shows are likely to sell out
so you need to move fast
or miss out!
And to top it off opening
act is Kitsch.
Check out www.myspace.
com/dynamoshows for more info
about this and other upcoming
shows.
To be in to win simply put
your name, address and daytime
contact number on the back of a
standard sized envelope, address
it to the ‘NOFX CD Competition’
and make sure it reaches our offi
ce by 5pm next Wednesday.
