Handbag and Sally snatch North Island sidecar title NZ1 combination left lamenting on what might have been NORTH ISLAND champions John Hannon and Jason Wallis (Handbag and Sally) wave to their fans after clinching the title in a thrilling run-off at McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedway on Sunday. Elizabeth Bayliss photo 032TC020-07 By Colin Thorsen Mechanical problems robbed NZ1 Toby Lardelli and Mike Bond of victory in the North Island sidecar championships at Mc- Donald’s Kihikihi Speedway. Having posted maximum points from four straight wins on Sunday, the Gisborne combination needed only to fi nish third to secure one point in the fi fth and fi nal heat to take the title. But they had to race on bike 8, kindly loaned to them by their Gisborne mates, after their own machine failed to fi re. Lardelli and Bond looked headed for the third placing they required until making a mess of the last corner and fi nishing fourth. The error was simply a result of the best combination in New Zealand being unfamiliar with their borrowed bike’s set up. They fi nished the competition in a threeway tie for fi rst, necessitating a run-off with 19v John Hannon/Jason Wallis and 15v Craig Scott/Tony Hirini, both of Wanganui. Hannon and his swinger Wallis (better known throughout New Zealand speedway circles as Handbag and Sally) got off to a fl yer in the four-lap run-off. They were never headed despite Scott/ Hirini being right on their tail throughout. Hannon/Wallis looked back to their mighty form of 2005 when they won the New Zealand Grand Prix. Lardelli/Bond had to settle for third. The event attracted a full fi eld of 16 bikes, with four of them also locked on equal points for fourth. Kihikihi Speedway is hosting the North Island streetstocks this coming Sunday, 1pm. A 26-strong fi eld will vie for honours over three 15-lap races. The winner will be decided on accumulated points. Both NZ1 Nigel Patterson and Kihikihi’s NZ2 Steve De Malmanche have entered. Other top contenders include Trevor De Malmanche, Gisborne’s Brenden Gooch and Aucklanders Mark McNabb and Bill Peat.
