Plenty to savour at
Kawhia Kai Festival
The Kawhia Kai Festival this
weekend is expected to draw thousands
of visitors from the Tainui
waka area, as well as from further
afi eld.
Spokesperson Lloyd Whiu says
the Kai Festival is unique.
“It is proudly tangata whenua,
and celebrates the starting place of
all people of Tainui. Coming to the
festival is like a mini pilgrimage for
many of our people.”
Festival organisers certainly think
they have hit a winning combination
too - Kawhia is a small town with a
big heart.
“We love the fact that we bring
thousands of Maori and non-Maori
together here at this time of the
year.
“The Kai Festival keeps going
from strength to strength.”
The Kawhia Kai Festival kicks off
at 9.30 am on Saturday.
TRADITIONAL CRAFTS
Ta-moko practitioner Moaera
Anderson will be demonstrating
his skill and artistry behind the
community centre in Omimiti Park.
Carving and weaving demonstrations
will also be in this area.
HANGI
Served in a traditional kono,
hangi will be available at the following
times:
10.30am: (Rakaunui Marae),
11.30am: (Mokoroa Marae),
12.00pm: (Taniwharau kapa haka
and Te Ramaihiko Rangatahi Trust)
