<strong>NINA</strong> Report 635<br />

Foreword<br />

This <strong>survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>freshwater</strong> <strong>fishes</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong><strong>the</strong>ir</strong> parasites <strong>in</strong> Guanacaste Conservation Area (Area<br />

Conservacion de Guanacaste, ACG) was <strong>in</strong>itiated as part <strong>of</strong> a larger <strong>survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> vertebrate parasites<br />

<strong>in</strong> this area (see http://www.parasitesrus.com/content/?ps=1). ACG was <strong>in</strong>tended as <strong>the</strong><br />

geographic site for <strong>the</strong> planned All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) (Janzen & Hallwachs<br />

1994). When this mega biodiversity exercise had to be ab<strong>and</strong>oned <strong>in</strong> its full scale format,<br />

some groups <strong>of</strong> scientists <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ATBI decided to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong> effort to<br />

<strong>in</strong>ventory ”<strong><strong>the</strong>ir</strong>” respective taxonomic groups <strong>in</strong> ACG to <strong>the</strong> extent that fund<strong>in</strong>g could be obta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

The parasites <strong>of</strong> vertebrates were one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> groups where work on an <strong>in</strong>ventory was<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiated, coord<strong>in</strong>ated by pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dan Brooks. The <strong>NINA</strong> staff jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> field work <strong>and</strong> analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> results. With fund<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences <strong>and</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Research Council <strong>of</strong><br />

Canada (NSERC) <strong>and</strong> Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (<strong>NINA</strong>), we were able to collect<br />

<strong>freshwater</strong> fish <strong>and</strong> analyse <strong><strong>the</strong>ir</strong> parasite fauna dur<strong>in</strong>g three field periods, <strong>in</strong> June 1998 (at <strong>the</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season), <strong>and</strong> February 1999 <strong>and</strong> March 2001 (dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dry season).<br />

This somewhat delayed report describes <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>survey</strong>s <strong>of</strong> 1998, 1999 <strong>and</strong> 2001, <strong>in</strong><br />

order to provide an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collected biodiversity data, as a possible basel<strong>in</strong>e for future<br />

aquatic research activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ACG.<br />
