CHRISTMAS DO-OVER LUNCHEON<br />

The Saratoga County Office for the Aging<br />

Home Delivered Meal Program is once again<br />

sponsoring a Christmas Do-Over Luncheon<br />

on Wednesday, <strong>April</strong> 10 th at 12:00pm at the<br />

<strong>Center</strong>. Menu includes: Tossed Salad, Stuffed<br />

Chicken Breast, Mashed Sweet Potatoes,<br />

Green Beans, Dinner Roll, Strawberry<br />

Shortcake, Milk and C<strong>of</strong>fee. After lunch we<br />

will have our regularly scheduled afternoon<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bingo. Everyone is welcome to attend.<br />

Sign up in the dining room no later than<br />

noon on Monday, <strong>April</strong> 8 th .<br />

CANDY LUNCHEON TRIP<br />

Join us on Monday, <strong>April</strong> 15 th or Tuesday<br />

<strong>April</strong> 16 th for a special treat as we head to the<br />

Park Avenue Confectionary shop in<br />

Mechanicville. Our fun begins with candy<br />

making demonstrations followed by your very<br />

own chance to try your hand at making these<br />

delectable delights. Save some room for lunch<br />

at The Ugly Rooster in Mechanicville. This<br />

members-only trip is free with lunch on your<br />

own. Sign-up begins after the <strong>April</strong> Business<br />

Meeting. Your refundable $5.00 will reserve<br />

your seat. Van leaves at 10:45am.<br />

BOWLING TRIP<br />

Our monthly Bowling Party will be held on<br />

Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 25 th at 10:30am at Spare Time<br />

Bowl on Route 9. The cost <strong>of</strong> $5.00 gets you 2<br />

games, shoes, pizza and soda. Non-members<br />

are welcome for the unsubsidized cost <strong>of</strong><br />

$8.50. The cost for non-bowlers enjoying<br />

lunch is $2.00. See you there.<br />

TURNING MEMORIES INTO MEMOIRS<br />

The Clifton Park/<strong>Halfmoon</strong> Library,<br />

in partnership with the <strong>Center</strong>, is<br />

again sponsoring a workshop, Turning<br />

Memories into Memoirs, here at the <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

This five-session workshop will provide<br />

advice and encouragement as well as actual<br />

writing practice. Each class consists <strong>of</strong><br />

writing exercises, discussion <strong>of</strong> “the practice<br />

<strong>of</strong> writing”, book suggestions, handouts and<br />

suggested assignments. Local writer and<br />

poet, Mary Sanders Shartle, is our instructor.<br />

Sessions will be held on <strong>April</strong> 9 th , 16 th , 23 rd ,<br />

30 th and May 7 th , from 12:30pm to 2:30pm.<br />

Workshop fee is $25.00 however; the Clifton<br />

Park/<strong>Halfmoon</strong> Library will subsidize<br />

$10.00, bringing the cost to $15.00. The<br />

<strong>Center</strong> will subsidize the workshop for<br />

members only, reducing the fee for<br />

members to just $10.00. Class size is<br />

limited so please sign-up at the <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

Members and non-members are welcome.<br />

FREE HEALTH SCREENING CLINIC<br />

The Saratoga County Office for the Aging<br />

in partnership with the Saratoga County<br />

Public Health Services will be sponsoring a<br />

free Health Screening Clinic on Wednesday,<br />

<strong>April</strong> 24 th from 10:00am to 12:00pm.<br />

Screenings will include: Glucose,<br />

Cholesterol and Blood Pressure.<br />

Contact the <strong>Center</strong> at 371-3892 for<br />

an appointment.<br />

CARD STAMPING WORKSHOP<br />

Our Card Stamping Workshops let you make<br />

your own beautiful greeting cards. Come get<br />

in on the action and create great cards for<br />

less than it would cost you for one at the<br />

store. Our next class will be held on <strong>April</strong><br />

19 th at 10:00am and 12:30pm. All supplies<br />

are provided. The cost is just $2.00, due at<br />

time <strong>of</strong> sign-up. The <strong>Center</strong> also <strong>of</strong>fers an<br />

informal weekly card stamping session<br />

every Friday at 12:30pm for all interested<br />

stampers!<br />

A NIGHT OF LINE DANCING<br />

The <strong>Center</strong> will host a community evening<br />

Line Dance on Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 6 th from<br />

7:00pm to 10:00pm with Kevin Richards.<br />

Admission for those wishing to dance is $7.00.<br />

Non-dancers are free. Dance starts at 7:00pm,<br />

with doors opening at 6:00pm for dinner. So<br />

come hungry and help support the <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

INFORMAL JEWELRY MAKING CLASS<br />

Join us on Tuesday, <strong>April</strong> 30 th at 12:30pm for<br />

a not so formal Jewelry Making Class. Janet<br />

Carroll and Doreen Draiss have teamed up to<br />

be your not so formal instructors. This month<br />

we will be making a necklace and pair <strong>of</strong><br />

earrings. The cost is $3.00. You must sign up<br />

at the front desk by <strong>April</strong> 23 rd . Seating is<br />

limited. Come have a great time.<br />

DEFENSIVE DRIVER COURSE<br />

On <strong>April</strong> 29 th from 9:00am to 4:30pm, AARP<br />

will again <strong>of</strong>fer a Driving Course here at the<br />

<strong>Center</strong>. This class is now full with a waiting<br />

list. Participants may want to sign-up in the<br />

dining room for lunch at the <strong>Center</strong>, or bring<br />

a bag lunch with them.<br />

LET’S SAY “HELLO”<br />

The <strong>Center</strong> had many new<br />

people march in and join our<br />

membership. Joining our<br />

wonderful organization this<br />

past month were Chuck LaFountain, Elizabeth<br />

DeLucia, Carmelo Cavoli, Arthur and Sylma<br />

LeBlanc, Dianne Halton, Bill Shumway, Jessie<br />

Hinchcliff, Cecelia Quinlan, Rosemary Blond,<br />

Pat and Connie Crowe, Paula Purcell and<br />

Barbara Duchowny. It is great to welcome<br />

each <strong>of</strong> you to the <strong>Center</strong>. A reception will be<br />

held for all members following the <strong>April</strong> 3 rd<br />

Business Meeting. Please plan to join us<br />

ALZHEIMER SUPPORT GROUP<br />

Our Alzheimer Support Group will be meeting<br />

on Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 18 th at 12:00pm.<br />

Caregivers group together and begin their<br />

session with a complimentary luncheon<br />

provided by the <strong>Center</strong>. Those with<br />

Alzheimer’s/dementia enjoy lunch together,<br />

before participating in a group activity. If you<br />

would like to attend, or know <strong>of</strong> someone who<br />

would be interested in attending, please call<br />

the <strong>Center</strong> to sign-up. Non-members welcome.<br />

FALL PREVENTION SEMINAR<br />

Join us on Wednesday, <strong>April</strong> 17 th<br />

at 11:00am for a Fall Prevention<br />

Seminar lead by Dr. Dudick. Falls<br />

in and around the home are one <strong>of</strong> the leading<br />

causes <strong>of</strong> fractures in those over 60. What is<br />

sad is that most <strong>of</strong> these falls could have been<br />

prevented. Come learn what you can do to<br />

keep you and your family safe from a break<br />

that could change your life.


WHO’S RUNNING THIS SHIP ANYWAY?<br />

That depends on you! This June, the entire<br />

membership <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Center</strong> will elect new<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers to represent us and carry out the<br />

business <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Center</strong>. Doreen Draiss has<br />

been appointed as Chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Nominating Committee by President Ruth<br />

Smalley. Committee members have now been<br />

chosen and are seeking nominees for the<br />

various <strong>of</strong>fices and for taking nominations<br />

from the membership. If you would like more<br />

information on the <strong>of</strong>fices and duties, would<br />

like to make a nomination, or would be<br />

interested in holding a position, please call the<br />

<strong>Center</strong> and let us know.<br />

DO YOU CARE?<br />

On Thursday, May 2 nd the Hilton in Clifton<br />

Park will be hosting a fundraising luncheon<br />

for Care Links. Seating starts at 12:00pm<br />

with a luncheon menu that includes: Three<br />

Bean Minestrone Soup, Chicken Francaise<br />

with Rice Pilaf and Vegetable Medley,<br />

Strawberries and Ice Cream for dessert, and<br />

choice <strong>of</strong> C<strong>of</strong>fee or Tea. The cost is $20.00<br />

with all proceeds to benefit the Care Links<br />

Interfaith Community Caregivers Program.<br />

Care Links matches volunteers with seniors<br />

living in <strong>Halfmoon</strong>, Clifton Park, Malta and<br />

Mechanicville, to help seniors remain<br />

independent at home. Services include<br />

companionship, respite care, transportation,<br />

household help and friendly phoning.<br />

Tickets are available at the <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

MAY IS SENIOR CITIZENS’ MONTH<br />

The month <strong>of</strong> May has been declared <strong>Senior</strong><br />

Citizens’ Month. The <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Halfmoon</strong> is<br />

supportive <strong>of</strong> its’ senior population and<br />

appreciates all that they contribute to the<br />

town. On Wednesday, May 1 st , The <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Halfmoon</strong> will honor the seniors <strong>of</strong> our<br />

community at a special <strong>Town</strong> Board<br />

Meeting to be held at the <strong>Town</strong> Hall at<br />

2:00pm. All senior members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

community are invited to attend. At this<br />

meeting the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Halfmoon</strong> will present<br />

the <strong>Center</strong> with a check, which is used to<br />

support our programs and activities. Let’s<br />

show the <strong>Town</strong> how much we appreciate<br />

their support by attending this special <strong>Town</strong><br />

Board Meeting. Please note that our<br />

regularly scheduled Business Meeting on<br />

May 1 st will be held at the <strong>Halfmoon</strong> <strong>Town</strong><br />

Hall at 1:00pm.<br />

HERMITS<br />

Everyone is invited to join the HERMITS<br />

(Happily Eating Regular Meals In <strong>Town</strong><br />

Somewhere) on Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 11 th for lunch<br />

at Shirley’s Café in Jonesville. Van will leave at<br />

11:30am. Your $5.00 refundable deposit will<br />

hold your reservation on the van. You may<br />

also drive yourself. Lunch is on your own.<br />

LET’S HIT THE ROAD<br />

Our trip to Manchester Vermont on<br />

Wednesday, <strong>April</strong> 24 th to tour the Hildene<br />

Estate, will begin boarding at 8:45am and<br />

leave at 9:00am. Please park on the side and in<br />

front <strong>of</strong> the Historical Society. You will board<br />

in the order that you signed up. Travelers<br />

heading to the Azalea Festival in Norfolk<br />

Virginia on <strong>April</strong> 25 th will board at 6:15am<br />

and leave at 6:30am. Our May 22 nd trip to New<br />

York City to visit/tour the Ground Zero<br />

Memorial is now full with a waiting list as is<br />

our June 11 th train trip to North Creek then<br />

luncheon cruise on Blue Mountain Lake and<br />

tour <strong>of</strong> Camp Sagamore. Looking for an<br />

overnight! Join us for a trip to<br />

the Finger Lakes July 25 th - July<br />

27 th . This trip includes 2 nights<br />

lodging at the prestigious Keuka<br />

College located on Keuka Lake. Meals, wine<br />

touring, boat cruise, Belhurst Castle, shopping<br />

at the Windmill (Amish), and much more! Signup<br />

begins <strong>April</strong> 3 rd . The cost for all this is just<br />

$200.00 for members and $250.00 for nonmembers.<br />

Single rooms are an additional<br />

$75.00. Sign-up has begun for our 4 day 3<br />

night trip to Colonial Williamsburg from<br />

September 24 th to the 27 th . The cost is $425.00<br />

for members and $450.00 for non-members.<br />

Trip includes a visit to Berkeley Plantation,<br />

Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement,<br />

Yorktown Victory <strong>Center</strong> and Yorktown<br />

Riverwalk Landing. Our Lobsterfest is set for<br />

August 14 th at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.<br />

Octoberfest is set for October 29 th at Villa<br />

Roma in Callicoon, N.Y. More details to follow<br />

in upcoming newsletters. If you would like to<br />

CHANGE IN BUSINESS MEETING LOCATION<br />

Our May Business Meeting will be held at the<br />

<strong>Halfmoon</strong> <strong>Town</strong> Hall on Wednesday, May 1 st<br />

at 1:00pm. Sign-ups will be done after the<br />

town hall meeting. Please plan to join us.
