Possessing one of the most elegant baritone voices ever, Ben E King’s<br />

imprint on the musical landscape is indelible. Born in Henderson, North<br />

Carolina, King’s family moved to Harlem, where he joined The Drifters,<br />

singing on hits including ‘Dance With Me’ and ‘Count The Tears’. It was as a<br />

solo artist that he found iconic status, though, with the timeless ‘Stand By Me’.<br />

Fast forward to 2012 and Dwele’s one of the biggest names in his<br />

genre, having collaborated with everyone from Kanye West and J<br />

Dilla to Jazznova and Foxy Brown. A brand new album is due out this<br />

August - expect new cuts mixed in amongst the modern classics.<br />

THE JAZZ CAFE MEETS... DWELE<br />

It’s been a year since we last saw you at Jazz Cafe – what have you<br />

been up to?<br />

Just touring, wor<strong>king</strong> on that next project – we plan on dropping<br />

maybe third to fourth quarter this year, so it’s good. Right now, it’s<br />

just me handling the bulk of production – that’s the way it works for<br />

me, when I cut albums, I get the bulk of it done before I reach out to<br />

other producers to fill in the gaps.<br />

How is it sounding – on a soul tip, or a hip-hop tip?<br />

Right now, we’re still quite a way away from solidifying the album,<br />

and it’s been all over the place. There’s some songs in there that<br />

sound a little more acoustic from what people might know of me, but<br />

even when I venture outside of my style I still keep elements of my<br />

sound in it. It might be something new this time.<br />

Does touring change the way the album comes together?<br />

Oh, definitely, being on the road definitely has an influence. On the<br />

road, you see the way that people react to certain songs, and that<br />

really influences the way the album comes about. This time I’m<br />

gonna do a few more songs that cater towards the ladies – as if I<br />

wasn’t doing that before [LAUGHS]. I really wanna make more songs<br />

like ‘I Understand’ off of the last album, or that joint I did with<br />

Raheem. That’s the way I’m thin<strong>king</strong>.<br />

What have been your favourite places to play in the last year?<br />

Stand-out shows – of course, Jazz Cafe is like a home away from<br />

home. Chicago has been a lot of fun over this past run, Cali is always<br />

good – but it all starts running together, you know?<br />

What do you look for in a live band?<br />

I really like chemistry. I want to know that if one person falls,<br />

another person will pick up the baton. Because a lot of stuff can<br />

happen onstage, and usually does. That and catalogue. I want people<br />

that know my material, that can pick it up and play it first time. It’s<br />

important to be able to have fun – we do pretty much the same set<br />

every night, so they need to be able to throw a bit of their own style in<br />

there. So long as it doesn’t take away from mine!
