E King, the soul great that sung the timeless
‘Stand By Me’, here for a three-night residency.
We’ve got a reformed Onyx, New York hip-hop greats
back on the road following a long hiatus. We’ve got top
entertainment from The Cuban Brothers, and moody
reggae blues from a long-time friend of the Jazz Cafe,
the great Finley Quaye.

It’s been a year since we last saw you at Jazz Cafe – what have you
been up to?
Just touring, working on that next project – we plan on dropping
maybe third to fourth quarter this year, so it’s good. Right now, it’s
just me handling the bulk of production – that’s the way it works for
me, when I cut albums, I get the bulk of it done before I reach out to
other producers to fill in the gaps.
How is it sounding – on a soul tip, or a hip-hop tip?
Right now, we’re still quite a way away from solidifying the album,
and it’s been all over the place. There’s some songs in there that
sound a little more acoustic from what people might know of me, but
even when I venture outside of my style I still keep elements of my
sound in it. It might be something new this time.
Does touring change the way the album comes together?
Oh, definitely, being on the road definitely has an influence. On the
road, you see the way that people react to certain songs, and that
really influences the way the album comes about. This time I’m
gonna do a few more songs that cater towards the ladies – as if I
wasn’t doing that before [LAUGHS]. I really wanna make more songs
like ‘I Understand’ off of the last album, or that joint I did with
Raheem. That’s the way I’m thinking.
What have been your favourite places to play in the last year?
Stand-out shows – of course, Jazz Cafe is like a home away from
home. Chicago has been a lot of fun over this past run, Cali is always
good – but it all starts running together, you know?
What do you look for in a live band?
I really like chemistry. I want to know that if one person falls,
another person will pick up the baton. Because a lot of stuff can
happen onstage, and usually does. That and catalogue. I want people
that know my material, that can pick it up and play it first time. It’s
important to be able to have fun – we do pretty much the same set
every night, so they need to be able to throw a bit of their own style in
there. So long as it doesn’t take away from mine!
