IT’S ANOTHER EXCITING COUPLE OF MONTHS
COMING UP AT THE JAZZ CAFE, AS WE PIECE
TOGETHER A STACK MORE SHOWS FOR YOUR
LISTENING AND GROOVING PLEASURE.
Just a glance at the schedule should have hip-hop
fans making a grab for their credit card. March kicks off
with the return of Chali 2Na, MC for Jurassic 5 and
Ozomatli – check our exclusive interview with him on
page 8. Plus in April we’ve got a very special show for all
turntable junkies – an appearance from ‘the Jimi
Hendrix of the turntables’, DJ Q-Bert. And the month
ends with a true underground legend in the shape of
Los Angeles MC Murs, former Def Jux stalwart and
veteran of a string of excellent collaborations with DJ
9th Wonder.
Elsewhere, we’re very pleased to present a show
from two of Detroit’s most remarkable, singular
artists. We’ve got soul maverick Amp Fiddler, who’ll be
debuting material from his forthcoming ‘Ampidelic
World’ – and expect a few classics from the likes of
‘Waltz Of A Ghettofly’ and ‘AfroStrut’ along the way.
Plus the great Dwele will be joining us supporting new
album ‘Wants. World. Women’, a masterful blend of
soul, hip-hop and R&B.
And we’ve got a very special UK star in the house in
the shape of Boy George, who’ll be leading an evening
of jazz and a very special auction at the Jazz Cafe as
part of the Hepatitis C Trust’s Get Tested! campaign.
The night will feature music Josh Weller, Paloma Faith
and special guests, plus Jodie Harsh leading an auction
– so come down, and give generously.

Formed in Brooklyn in 1992 by MCs Lil' Fame and Billy
Danzenie, M.O.P – short for Mash-Out Posse – have
straddled the underground and the mainstream,
linking up with the likes of Jay-Z, the Wu-Tang Clan
and 50 Cent’s G-Unit Records and dropping hits like
‘Ante Up’ and ‘Cold As Ice’ without losing their
hardcore edge.
Their two-decade career has seen a string of quality
albums and mixtapes, most recently 2009’s
‘Foundation’, featuring production from DJ Premier
and Fame in his ‘Fizzy Womack’ production guise.
The duo made their Jazz Cafe debut last year – turn
out now for a second helping.
TONY JOE WHITE + STEPH NEWTON
Tony Jow White’s music is part of America's
soundtrack - sparse and elegant, filled with shadows,
sadness and beauty.
Names such as Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Roy
Orbison and Dusty Springfield have reinterpreted his
tunes, while the likes of Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler
and Emmylou Harris have guested on recent,
theme-oriented projects such as ‘The Heroines’ and
‘Uncovered’.
For ‘The Shine’, released 2010 on White's Swamp
Records imprint, he goes back to his roots, blues and
backwoods country set to raw guitar and
spellbinding lyrical imagery.

Forming the band Roachford in
1987, he signed an
unprecedented seven-album
deal with Columbia Records,
releasing a string of
unforgettable tracks like ‘Cuddly
Toy’ and ‘Family Man’ that would
make the band one of the
biggest-selling homegrown acts
of the ‘90s. Now solo, Andrew
co-wrote and sang lead vocals on
the upcoming Mike and the
Mechanics album, and is
currently working on his brand

Keep The Faith bring two respected American
neo-soul acts to the London stage for the very first
time, backed by a full live band.
New York singer-songwriter Sy Smith is a modern,
independent soul artiste with a soprano voice that’s

Deolinda are already a big deal in their native

beyond their native borders. Their unique blend of
delicate fado and Cape Verdean blues saw them

MACEO PARKER
The name Maceo Parker is close to synonymous with
funk music itself. Collaborator with James Brown,
George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Parker is one of the
all-time great saxophonists and an artist that
fashioned a style of playing emulated by millions since.
Now Parker heads his own funk orchestra, mixing the
discipline up with soul, jazz, hip-hop and R&B. Known
for his iconic live presence and two-hour-plus shows,
this is your chance to see a titan of the art in action,
up close.

Chali 2na has done it all. From his days growing up on the hardscrabble streets of

epitomises the portrait of a 21st century artist.
Now, buoyed by the wide spectrum of socio-cultural and geographical influences

What can we expect to see at your show at the Jazz Cafe?
The perfect example is probably the last time I was over with the Breakestra – but that
was like a collaborative effort, this will be more of my own stuff. I’ll be bringing my band
House Of Vibe over, and basically we’ll be recreating the dynamic of a lot of my solo
material, with some old stuff thrown in. The aim is to thoroughly entertain the crowd.
Last we heard from you was the ‘Fish Market 2’ collection last year…
Yeah, that was basically conceived as a snack before the next meal – it was a whole
bunch of tracks that I loved, but they weren’t exactly pieces of a puzzle, like on ‘Fish
Outta Water’. I wanted it to be more exclusive songs, as opposed to songs I did with
other people on their projects – I wanted it to sound fresher to the ear, not just
recycling old songs.
You recently collaborated with UK dubstep star Rusko – are you a fan of the genre?
Yes sir, I’m a fan because of the bass – that bass is ridiculous. I’m always blown by
the ways that people can take something familiar and make it sound amazing – you
know, dubstep takes synthetic sounds and do just the weirdest things, bending and
twisting them, and Rusko’s the master at it. It’s cool to be able to approach someone
you respect and do music with them, create something that you never would have
expected. That’s something that continues to drive me as an artist – the chance to
step outside of a box I made for myself.

Formed in Leeds in 2009, the seven-piece Submotion Orchestra have rapidly
built up a reputation as one of the most interesting and original projects working
in the UK today.
Earth-shaking bass and drums combine with lush keyboard and trumpet
textures to create the perfect bed for Ruby Wood’s fragile, beautiful vocals and
the celestial effects of sound designer Ruckspin. Tonight’s gig marks the release
of ‘All Yours’, the first single off their forthcoming debut album,

Your debut album is due later in 2011 - can you give us a sneak preview of what we
can expect - any guests, or tracks slated for singles?
The album spans quite a wide area from carnival-esque up-tempo numbers to
stripped-back smoked-out grooves. The lead single 'All Yours' has some qualities of
both, so it seemed suitable to release as a taster of what is to come.
Any particularly memorable shows to date? And what would be the dream gig
for Submotion?
Our performance at The Big Chill Festival 2010 was pretty special. We warmed up for
Bonobo who where on after us. It was just starting to get dark, we were on a lovely stage
right by a lake all lit up with fairy lights and I just remember feeling really grateful to be
there. The crowd were amazing and so was the sound. I enjoyed the whole gig from
start to finish! Dream gig? Hmm... possibly The West Holts stage at Glastonbury, again
just as it’s starting to get dark, with lots and lots of people watching! That'd be perfect.

How has 2011 been so far?
It’s been good – I’ve been out on the road promoting the album, we did DC, I did a
New Year’s Eve show here, I’ve been out to LA - a little bit of everywhere. I never
really stop touring, I always stay on the road. But it’s beena minute since I been to
London, so ready to come back.
What do you make of UK audiences?
I love the UK. When I was just starting off in ’03, Jazz Cafe was really like my home
– it’s how I really learned how to be myself onstage. Before that I was into making
music for myself, at home. But the Jazz Cafe was my very first residency, and
performing was all the way new to me. Playing on the same stage every night really
helped me come into my own.
Your new album, ‘W.ants. W.orld. W.omen’, is split into three parts. What’s the story?
One section is my way of trying something different with music, trying things
outside of myself physically – everything from rapping to using Autotune to messing
with a vocoder. The world section is kind of my way of capturing right now, an audio
time capsule – from having a black president to the state of the economy. I’ve been
sitting on a few political songs and I haven’t really had the avenue to put it out, it
doesn’t fit amongst baby-making music. So here, it has its own section. But then,
of course, we’ve got the Women section – and that’s where we get down to the
baby-making music...

Born in Beirut, now settled in France,
the trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf plays
a heady mix of jazz, funk and
improvisation steeped in classical
and Arabic styles.
In Paris, he has become a noted figure
on the electro-jazz scene, bringing his
style to modern funk and electronica
acts, but his music also has a
mystical, contemplative quality that
sets him apart from most
contemporary players.
Relatively new to the UK, he made his
debut last November at the Barbican
as part of the London Jazz Festival.

Based between Paris, Tel Aviv and
New York, Keren Ann is known for
both her wonderful solo albums and
as a songwriter-for-hire, her songs
having been performed by
internationally acclaimed artists
including Henri Salvador, Jane Birkin
and Francoise Hardy.
A skilful producer and studio
engineer, proficient on guitar, piano
and clarinet, she has recently
co-written and produced for French
stars including Sylvie Vartan and the
singer/actress Emmanuelle Seigner.
For 2011, though, she’s back in the
guise of solo artist, preparing her sixth
solo album ‘101’ and its wonderful
lead-off single, ‘My Name Is Trouble’.

Now regarded as one of the most
daring and adventurous artists in
modern day hip-hop, his 2005
masterpiece ‘Beauty And The Beat’
blurred block party beats with
elements of ‘60s psychedelia, and
new album saw him in on top
crate-digging from, plucking choice
cuts from the back catalogue of his
US distributor, Traffic.

very special evening of music paying
tribute to one of the greatest blues
musicians in history, Muddy Waters.
There are few bands out there more
suited to the job. Bringing blistering
guitar, vocal and harmonica is Julian
Burdock, who has played sideman to
greats including Pee Wee Ellis, Fred
Wesley, Beverly Knight and Jocelyn
Brown. Holding down the low-end is
Silas Maitland, whose playing credits
include Geno Washington, Son of
Dave, Imelda May and The Blues
Brothers. On Hammond is Moz
Gamble, who’s played keys for none
other than Paul McCartney. And
bringing the raw, funky backbeat is
drummer Mike Connolly.

Pocus blend hip-hop, soul and funk -

commercial plaudits on its release in
2005, and the group have continued
to break new ground, investigating a
joyful, soulful sound on 2007’s
semi-live, semi-studio LP ‘Place 54’

Jazz Cafe favourite Omar).
They returned last year with ‘16
Pièces’ - a statement that blends
politics, poetry and humour, and
spawned ‘Beautiful Losers’, a hooky
collaboration with Brit soul queen

Philadelphia-born singer/producer
Bilal Sayeed Oliver made his debut
back in 2001 on with ‘1st Born
Second’, a cut of cool modern soul
that balanced experimental stylings
with mainstream appeal.
The album was a critical success, but
after its follow-up, ‘Love For Sale’,
was signed up then later cancelled by
Interscope Records, Bilal moved back
to the underground, where he could
further indulge his musical ideas
without interference from the
mainstream.
The result, last year’s ‘Airtight’s
Revenge’, saw the light of day on
California’s Plug Research - a deep,
intricate exploration of vocal soul,
jazz, funk and avant-garde sounds
that confirmed its maker to be one of
the most innovative singer/producers

THE PIONEERS WERE

JAMAICA’S EARLY
HARMONY GROUPS,
finding fame later in the decade with
songs like ‘Samfie Man’ and
‘Jackpot’. Popular in the UK, the band
relocated in 1970, and a cover of
Jimmy Cliff’s ‘Let Your Yeah Be Yeah’
hit No.5 in 1971.
A whole new generation were
exposed to the band when ‘Long
Shot Kick De Bucket’ was covered by
The Specials on their ‘The Special
AKA Live!’ EP, which hit No.1 in 1980.
Now consisting of Sydney Crooks,
George Dekker and Jackie Robinson,
this is a rare chance to see some of
most influential figures in reggae on
a UK stage.

MURS
Los Angeles rapper Murs – it stands
for ‘Making Underground Raw Shit’ -
cut his teeth in the 1990s recording
with groups like 3 Melancholy Gypsies
and Living Legends, appearing on
over 20 records, EPs and singles in a
seven-year period.
It was his 2003 LP ‘The End Of The
Beginning’, released on Def Jux, that
broke him to a wider audience, though,
and for 2008’s ‘Murs For President’,
he made the leap to the mainstream,
signing with Warner Bros.
Throughout this time, he’s also
maintained an ongoing collaboration
with North Carolina producer and DJ
9th Wonder, a meeting of minds
that’s spawned four records, most
notably last year’s ‘Fornever’,
described by the LA Times as ‘a
worthy soundtrack for the Southern
California spring.’

Born and raised in Ohio, Conya has been singing
since she was five years old, when she was first
caught grooving to the music of Stevie Wonder and
Angela Winbush.
A former attendee of Cleveland’s famed School of
the Arts, she also worked with underprivileged
youths in the state public schools – an experience
that fed into her candid, endearing 2002 debut,
‘A Poem about Ms. Doss’.
Her current album ‘Blu Transition’ is a collection in
stores now of up-tempo jams and fluid slow grooves
that invokes the spirits of legendary
composers-singers such as Chaka Khan, Betty
Wright, Natalie Cole, Me’shell N’Degeocello and
Alanis Morisette.
OLI BROWN
In 2002, Oli Brown picked up a guitar for the first time.
Just over two years later, this 15-year old prodigy
received an invitation from American blues band
Blinddog Smokin’ to join them on tour in the US, where
he played for the likes of Buddy Guy and Taj Mahal.
Inspired by the reception, back in the UK Oli put
together a band and signed up to German blues
imprint Ruf. His debut album, 2008’s ‘Open Road’,
was voted the No.2 blues album of 2008 by Blues
Matters! magazine, and its follow-up, last year’s
‘Heads I Win Tails You Lose’ confirmed its maker as
the brightest hope of a new generation of bluesmen.

Andreya Triana began singing at the
age of 7, inspired by the multicultural
sights and sounds of inner city
London. In love with music, she
would lock herself in her bedroom,
using two lo-fi cassette decks to
record harmonies. Now, she’s such
putting early investigations in sound
to good use with her ‘Freeflo
Sessions’ – experimental one-woman
shows where she uses a sampler to
loop vocals, percussive sounds and
beats to create a cutting-edge,
modern soul.
Soundcrash presentation
In 2006, she participated in the Red
Bull Music Academy in Australia, where
she further developed her
forward-thinking, improvised style and
penned an early collaboration with
Flying Lotus. Now signed to Ninja Tune,
last year she dropped her debut album
‘Lost Where I Belong’, produced by
Ninja stalwart Bonobo.

Rising to fame with singles like ‘I’m So Sorry’ and the
reggae chart-topping ‘Simply In Love’, Carroll
Thompson was one of the most loved UK reggae
stars of her era, selling over 750,000 copies of her
debut solo album, 1981’s ‘Hopelessly In Love’.
She’s since collaborated with Jools Holland, the Mad
Professor, Maxi Priest and Aswad, worked as a
consultant across film, radio and TV, and continues
to record music. Hear cuts from her new album, the
follow-up to 2008’s ‘Flying’, performed by
Thompson and some very special guests. The night
will be followed by a rare groove and funk session
with guest DJs.

The 2011 Gaymers Camden Crawl is scheduled for
Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May.
The forthcoming May Bank Holiday event will mark the
tenth edition of the Crawl since its inception in 1995. The organisers
are currently working to top last year’s star-studded line-up, which
included such luminaries as Pendulum, The Drums, Plan B, Teenage
Fanclub, We Are Scientists, Lostprophets, Roots Manuva, Lightspeed
Champion and Gang Of Four, alongside more than 200 of the
brightest new hopes from the UK and abroad. The Crawl takes
