6.2.8 Applications <strong>of</strong> Metallic Dampers<br />

In recent years, there has been a considerable increase in the number <strong>of</strong> installations <strong>of</strong> metallic<br />

damping devices in seismic areas. One example is an ADAS installed in the Wells Fargo Bank in<br />

San Francisco, along <strong>with</strong> bracing and additional upgrading to improve its ability to resist earthquakes.<br />

The ADAS system consists <strong>of</strong> 50 ksi steel plates cut in an hour-glass shape that bends in<br />

double-curvature flexure when subjected to lateral loading (Perry & Fierro 1994). Several other<br />

applications <strong>of</strong> metallic dampers are provided in Table 11.<br />
