Flexible learn<strong>in</strong>g options<br />
The overall CII <strong>in</strong>surance qualifications<br />
framework is extremely flexible, allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
you to select units from qualifications<br />
other than the one for which you are<br />
study<strong>in</strong>g. Therefore, if you are work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
towards the <strong>Certificate</strong>, <strong>Diploma</strong> or the<br />
<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong> you are able<br />
to select units from the entire <strong>in</strong>surance<br />
qualifications framework.<br />
If you sit, or have sat, CII f<strong>in</strong>ancial plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
exams (for example, the F<strong>in</strong>ancial Plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong>, <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ancial Plann<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>Diploma</strong>/<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
Plann<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Regulated F<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
Plann<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>Advanced</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ancial Plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong>, or comparable exams from other<br />
professional and educational bodies), you will<br />
also receive credits that can count towards<br />
completion of the <strong>in</strong>surance qualifications.<br />
Award <strong>in</strong> London Market<br />
<strong>Insurance</strong><br />
A specialist qualification for those work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> or with the London market, the Award <strong>in</strong><br />
London Market <strong>Insurance</strong> comprises two units<br />
(LM1) London market <strong>in</strong>surance essentials<br />
and (LM2) London market <strong>in</strong>surance pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
and practices.<br />
Together the two units provide a broad<br />
understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>surance process and<br />
practice across the London market as well as<br />
detailed understand<strong>in</strong>g of technical topics.<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> London Market<br />
<strong>Insurance</strong> Specialisation<br />
This advanced level qualification has been<br />
developed for London market specialists,<br />
<strong>in</strong> partnership with the Lloyd’s Market<br />
Association (LMA). Candidates can achieve<br />
this qualification by complet<strong>in</strong>g one<br />
<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> level unit (991) London<br />
market <strong>in</strong>surance specialisation. The unit is<br />
completed through successful completion<br />
of a 10,000 word dissertation on a topic<br />
relevant to the London <strong>in</strong>surance market.<br />
Note: Entry onto the London market<br />
dissertation is limited to approximately<br />
20 candidates per year. This is because of<br />
the amount of work <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> assess<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and accept<strong>in</strong>g proposals and <strong>in</strong> mark<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and moderat<strong>in</strong>g completed dissertations,<br />
all of which are undertaken by experienced<br />
London market practitioners.<br />
At the time of go<strong>in</strong>g to pr<strong>in</strong>t, when study<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for the <strong>Certificate</strong> you can claim up to<br />
30 f<strong>in</strong>ancial plann<strong>in</strong>g credits, <strong>in</strong> the case of<br />
the <strong>Diploma</strong> you are allowed to claim up to<br />
60 credits and for the <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong>,<br />
180 credits. Please note: these rules are<br />
currently under review – any changes will<br />
be publicised <strong>in</strong> 2013.<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Contract Word<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Contract certa<strong>in</strong>ty is a major issue fac<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
<strong>in</strong>surance <strong>in</strong>dustry, especially with<strong>in</strong> Lloyd’s<br />
and the London market.<br />
The FSA requires the provision of<br />
clear, comprehensive and fully-agreed<br />
policy word<strong>in</strong>gs before <strong>in</strong>ception to<br />
all policyholders.<br />
To help <strong>in</strong>dividuals and organisations<br />
meet this requirement, the CII developed<br />
the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Contract Word<strong>in</strong>g. It<br />
enhances knowledge of the practical<br />
application of word<strong>in</strong>gs and the issues<br />
associated with them.<br />
To acquire the <strong>Certificate</strong>, you must study<br />
and pass two units from the <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Insurance</strong>: (P05) <strong>Insurance</strong> law (or already<br />
hold one of the withdrawn legal units P03 or<br />
520) and (P21) Commercial <strong>in</strong>surance contract<br />
word<strong>in</strong>g. Candidates meet<strong>in</strong>g the completion<br />
requirements will automatically be awarded<br />
the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Contract Word<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Recognition of prior learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
When you pass exams through the CII, the<br />
credits will automatically appear on your<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g account, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g for exams that<br />
you may have passed under discont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

You may also be able to receive credits for<br />
relevant qualifications you have passed<br />
through other award<strong>in</strong>g bodies – to do<br />
this you should submit an application for<br />
recognition of prior learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong>s and <strong>Diploma</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />
Life and Disability Underwrit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and Claims<br />
The CII and the Assurance Medical and<br />
Underwrit<strong>in</strong>g Society (AMUS) jo<strong>in</strong>tly<br />
developed the follow<strong>in</strong>g qualifications,<br />
which are awarded by AMUS:<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Life and Disability<br />
Underwrit<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Life and<br />
Disability Claims – awarded to those<br />
that complete the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g either the unit (P61) Life, critical<br />
illness and disability underwrit<strong>in</strong>g or (P62)<br />
Life, critical illness and disability claims<br />
respectively. The AMUS also require a<br />
written work reference from your company’s<br />
chief underwriter.<br />
<strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Life and Disability Underwrit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Life and Disability Claims –<br />
awarded to those complet<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Diploma</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g units (P05) <strong>Insurance</strong><br />
law, (P63) Long term <strong>in</strong>surance bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
and either (P61) Life, critical illness and<br />
disability underwrit<strong>in</strong>g or (P62) Life, critical<br />
illness and disability claims respectively.<br />
The AMUS also require a written work<br />
reference from your company’s chief<br />
underwriter and evidence of cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />
professional development (CPD).<br />

By claim<strong>in</strong>g credits for qualifications<br />
you’ve atta<strong>in</strong>ed outside the CII framework,<br />
you’ll avoid duplicat<strong>in</strong>g learn<strong>in</strong>g already<br />
undertaken, <strong>in</strong> turn reduc<strong>in</strong>g the amount of<br />
study and obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g your CII qualification<br />
more quickly.<br />

CII/IATA <strong>Diploma</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g route<br />
The CII and IATA (the <strong>in</strong>ternational trade<br />
body which represents some 240 airl<strong>in</strong>es)<br />
have developed a dedicated learn<strong>in</strong>g route<br />
for staff work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the air transport sector<br />
whose responsibilities <strong>in</strong>clude any aspect<br />
of <strong>in</strong>surance.<br />
By complet<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong> via<br />
a specified route, plus the IATA air transport<br />
‘Procurement and contracts management’<br />
module, successful candidates will be<br />
awarded the CII <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong> along<br />
with recognition from IATA.<br />

Important note: To be awarded a CII<br />
qualification, you must obta<strong>in</strong>, by CII<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation, dissertation or coursework<br />
assessment, a pass <strong>in</strong> a unit from the<br />
qualification that you are look<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
complete, and meet the qualification<br />
completion requirements. These rules<br />
apply irrespective of how many credits your<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g qualifications might provide.<br />
