This was the first professional pantomime to be 

staged in Ilford since 1945. At the Ilford 

Hippodrome during the evening performance of the 

pantomime “Robinson Crusoe” on January 12th 

1945, shortly after the start of the show, the star, 

Renee Houston, had just launched into her opening 

number—”The Fleet’s In”. Suddenly the entire 

building juddered in the shock waves of an 

enormous explosion. A V2 rocket had fallen on a 

row of cottages behind the theatre, killing 15 people. 

The blast demolished the dressing rooms and 

brought much of the backstage area crashing down. 

After a momentary pause, the stage manager rushed 

onstage ordering the audience to evacuate the 

building, and despite swirling dust and sprinklers 

soaking the pit area, the conductor led the orchestra 

into its exit music, aiding a shocked, but nonpanicking 

audience evacuation. Miraculously only 

one person in the theatre was killed, though over a 

hundred were injured. The whole night was spent 

digging performers and staff out of the rubble. Two 

days later the ceiling of the Hippodrome collapsed 

on top of the stalls. The building was sealed off, and 

finally demolished twelve years later when some 

crumbling masonry fell on the top of a passing bus. 

The newly opened Kenneth More Theatre, thirty 

years later, renewed the tradition of an annual 

professional pantomime in Ilford. Not having any 

recent experience to use as a basis, it was decided to 

run for just three weeks. This “Dick Whittington” 

was a complete 100% sell-out.

Based on the success of the previous year, it was decided to run the pantomime for 

an extra week. The KMT had no costume or scenery stock of its own, so the entire 

physical production scenery for this panto (and for the following year’s “Sleeping 

Beauty” ) were bought from Cyril Fletcher. This provided the basis of what would 

eventually become a very large stock of the theatre’s own pantomime scenery and 

costumes.

For its third year, the pantomime run had been extended to six 

and a half weeks, and, with the brilliant Freddie Lees as Dame, 

was an outstanding success. KMT pantomimes were now firmly 

established as part of the town’s Christmas festivities.

This pantomime saw the first ever pairing of Nigel Ellacott and Peter Robbins as Ugly 

Sisters. Following their KMT debut they would go on to play the next 27 years as a 

double-act, in the course of which they became acknowledged as the best Ugly Sisters 

in the business, playing opposite major star-names and in most of the major UK theatres. This much acclaimed 

partnership sadly ended with the sudden and early death of Peter Robbins in 2009.

Three of the performers in this pantomime 

had all begun their professional careers at 

the KMT during 1983: Peter Beadle, 

Simon Hayward and Michael Clark. To 

avoid confusion with another Equity 

member of the same name, Michael Clark 

would change his name to Michael French 

and go on to enjoy a highly successful 

career on television. 

This show also marked the first occasion 

on which Loraine Porter was responsible 

for the choreography—and she would 

continue to be the creative force behind 

KMT pantomime dances for very many 

years.

David Gillespie had been booked to play Ugly Sister 

several months in advance, and then was offered the part of 

the Vicar in “Eastenders”, starting rehearsals on Monday 

January 11th. It so happened that Nigel Ellacott & Peter 

Robbins were playing Ugly Sisters in Aberdeen—where 

their panto opened the first week of December and ended 

on Sunday January 10th. Although it was a bit of a 

scrabble, Nigel and Peter left Scotland Monday morning 

and took over in Ilford on Tuesday evening—thus enabling 

David Gillespie to accept his TV offer. Having to learn a 

new script (though it had been written by Nigel) and 

change shows overnight was quite a challenge—but they 

rose to it with aplomb!

On December 23rd matinee, one week into the run, 

Gary Webb banged his leg against the side of the 

bed in the Ghost Scene 

and suffered some 

bruising. He was 

advised by the theatre 

doctor to “rest his leg” - 

and he was replaced for 

the evening performance 

by Vivyan Ellacott. 

Gary did not return to 

the show until January 

3rd, leaving Vivyan to 

cover 16 performances.

pantomimes - he had been in charge for a 

total of eighteen successive years.

Robert Quarry appeared in 

every one of the KMT pantomimes 

from 1975 to 2009 - a total of 35 

successive productions. During this 

time he never missed a single one of 

the 2,127 panto performances he 

gave during these years. 

To have played panto 35 years 

running in the same theatre is a 

record that, as far as we know, no 

one else has achieved in the world of 

Pantomime. 

Robert’s 2,000th KMT pantomime 

appearance came during “Jack and 

the Beanstalk” in the year 2007. 

However, Robert had appeared in 

many other shows at the KMT as 

well as panto. During the run of 

“Cinderella (1999-2000,) Robert 

was given a surprise onstage party to 

mark his 2000th overall performance 

at the Kenneth More.

This production opened a week earlier than 

usual, and staged eight performances (at 

10.30am and 1.15pm) especially for schools. 

This was the KMT’s 37th pantomime, and the 

first one not directed by Vivyan Ellacott, who 

had retired as Manager in 2010. Steven Day 

had been appointed the new manager and took 

over direction of this show, but he could 

hardly be described as a newcomer, since this 

was his 8th KMT panto as a performer or 

musical director.
