Professor Cristofor I. Simionescu 661
In 1949, he created, within the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry, “Gh. Asachi” Polytechnic Institute,
Iaşi, a section dedicated to the study of cellulose, paper and artificial yarns.
In 1967, he founded the first Romanian international journal – Cellulose Chemistry and Technology.
Professor Simionescu’s name is related to the research devoted to polymer grafting by chemical and
physical methods, to semi- and photo-conducting polymers based on (substituted) acetylene, to copolymers
and their technical utilization. He proposed the theory of conduction in organic polymers and a new approach
in the synthesis and characterisation of ultrahigh molecular weight polymers (pleistomers). He demonstrated
the role played by radicals in vegetal cancer proliferation as well as its possible inhibition by antioxidants.
OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS
As Member of the Roumanian Academy or in his administrative positions, Professor Simionescu had
the following achievements:
-1964, the transformation of "Petru Poni" Institute of Chemistry, with very diversified research topics,
into an Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry. This action was possible after a steady progress in polymer
science in terms of approach and extent.
-1975-1978, he persuaded the President of the Roumanian Academy to transfer the necessary funds
from the Elias Foundation to errect a new building for the headquarters of the Iaşi Branch of the Roumanian
Academy.
-1970-1972, he determined the Roumanian government to allocate the necessary funds to complete the
early building of “Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (constructed in 1952-1954, 1100 m 2 )
with a central frame (1000m 2 ) and in 1972 with a north wing (1100m 2 ).
-1973-1975, as Rector of “Gheorghe Asachi” Polytechnic Institute, Iaşi, he determined the Ministry of
Education to provide the financial means for the construction of the Faculty of Chemical Industry and to start
the construction of the buildings for other faculties on a new campus.
-In early 1990, he asked and obtained from the Government of Roumania the return of “Petru Poni”
Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry to the Roumanian Academy (the socialist authorities had arbitrarily
chosen to transfer the Institute from the Roumanian Academy to the Ministry of Education (1970-1975) and
after that to the Ministry of Chemical Industry (1975-1989)).
