Following the title of an article in a newspaper from Vlissingen dated from Febr. 24 th , 1878:<br />
„…. matrozen Ned.Loodswezen J.K<strong>amerman</strong>s en B.G.Balje hebben zich beschikbaar gesteld voor een expeditie naar de Noordpool“<br />
This means: ” …. seaman Joost K. and B.G.Baljá from the Dutch Pilot-Services declared to hold themselves ready to take part at the<br />
expedition to the North pole….”<br />
This Joost K<strong>amerman</strong>s is the brother of Izaak K<strong>amerman</strong>s and the son of Adriaan K<strong>amerman</strong>s (See Family-Tree scheme on<br />
page<br />

This is a memorandum held during<br />
the trip to the Barentzsea by a pilot<br />
colleague of Joost K<strong>amerman</strong>s, on<br />
the schooner “William Barentz”.<br />
Here the list of the crew<br />
Summary:<br />
Joost K<strong>amerman</strong>s born March 17,<br />
1849, began his career with 17 yrs as<br />
a ship’s boy, but it looks like he was<br />
a difficult person, because he did a lot<br />
of good but also had troubles with a<br />
demotion. After 1875 he learned for<br />
pilot and on his trip to the Barentssea<br />
he got differences with the commander<br />
and was punished therefor. After<br />
this trip he continued working as pilot<br />
in Vlissingen and died with 60, on<br />
Januari 19, 1910.<br />
The departure of the expedition<br />
on May 6, 1878, was painted in<br />
oil by H. Hulk and can be seen<br />
in the National Nautic Museum<br />
in Amsterdam.
