Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Summer is usually a time for teenagers
to kick back, relax, and enjoy their time
away from school. This wasn’t the case for
a group of nine ambitious students who
participated in Keystone’s Summer Undergraduate
Research Experience (SURE).
Under the direction of Vicki
Stanavitch ’92, biology/chemistry
instructor and laboratory supervisor,
current or recently graduated high school
students worked with Keystone students
on a college-level research project.
The eight week, intensive program
required approximately 30 hours per week,
Family Day
More than 280 parents and extended family members
visited campus for Family Day in September. Everyone
enjoyed a beautiful fall day and participated in a
variety of events, including panel discussions on
student life, athletic events, and family activities.
Race for the Cure
Keystonians were well represented
among the 10,000 individuals dressed in
shades of pink and white during Scranton’s
2010 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Students, faculty, and staff, participated
in the 3.2-mile race/walk in memory of
Dayna Roberts, a Keystone student who
was taken from us too soon in December
2009. Dayna’s parents, George and Lorrie
Roberts, organized the race team,
“Remembering Dayna,” and family and
friends, as well as members of the
Keystone community, gathered to celebrate
including both laboratory and library
research components.
“Not every college student gets a
chance to do this type of research, let alone
most high school students,” Vicki said.
“Here, the students are actually working
with me on my own research, gaining
useful lab experience. The program
introduces students to the process of
discovery and to a college campus
environment, and encourages students to
pursue studies and careers in the sciences.”
Parents of Keystone students can
rely on a new and valuable resource, the
Keystone College Parents Association.
The Parents Association offers
an excellent opportunity for parents and
families to stay connected, support
student success, and advance the
mission of the College.
her memory and support the cause that
meant so much to her.
“It was heartwarming to see so any
come out in remembrance of Dayna,”
said Lorrie, an accounts payable
specialist here at Keystone. “Dayna
certainly touched many during her
time with us.”
In addition to the walkers, the
Keystone College cheerleaders were
also on hand. The squad performed at
a pep rally prior to the event and also
along the race route.
