nuwe pogings om die dorp, skool en ander
plekke in en om Hoedspruit se name te
verander onlangs weer na vore gekom het.
Diè naamsverandering KAN deur Hoedspruiters
gestop word. As genoeg mense hul
weerstand en misnoë te kenne gee en op die
regte plek en tyd beswaar aanteken, kan die
name nie verander nie.
Dit is egter noodsaaklik dat ‘n gekoördineerde
en weldeurdagte aksie geloods moet
word en daarvoor word die steun van elke
Hoedspruiter gevra.
‘n Spesialwe forum is gestig om die
naamsverandering teen te staan en dit is
krities belangrik dat elke Hoedspruiter die
Forum se inisiatiewe en weerstand ondersteun.
Alle inwoners van Hoedspruit wat teen die
naamsverandering gekant is word dringend
versoek om komende Dinsdag, die 7 Augustus,
om 18:00 vir 18:30 by die Van
Rensburg saal bymekaar te kom vir ‘n openbare
vergadering rondom die voorgestelde
naamsverandering van Hoedspruit dorp, die
skole en ander plekke in en om Hoedspruit.
Die gemeenskap moet besef dat die
naamsverandering slegs kan plaasvind as
ons dit toelaat. Die forum sal dit ten doel hê
om die nodige mandate en besware te
f a s i l i t e e r.
Daar sal ook gepoog word om die hulp en
kennis van Afri-Forum in te bring in die
beoogde proses.

Learners take part in micro chipping
A GROUP of grade 4 and 5 learners from the Hoedspruit Christian School travelled to a local
Hoedspruit Nature Reserve where they took part in the micro chipping of one of its rhino’s on
July 16. The learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and where educated on the need to
conserve and protect our beautiful rhino. The learners returned to school exhausted, but
inspired and grateful to have participated in the remarkable experience of micro chipping a
rhino in its natural environment.

Five women in court Alleged serial rapist
on charges of fraud
FIVE women appeared in the Naphuno Magistrate's
Court on Friday for allegedly defrauding
the South African Social Security
Agency (SASSA) for over R100 000.
The five suspects, Malefo Comfort Moropane
(33), Maphure Clara Moeng (45),
Khutso Portia Makamela (32), Maseepe Julia
Komane (30) and Melita Mmola (27) from
Ga-Sekororo in Maruleng were each granted
R500 bail and will re appear on Wednesday
and Thursday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier
Hangwani Mulaudzi said the five used faked
birth certificates to claim child support grants
for non-existing children.
"Their scam was put to an abrupt end when
the police pounced on them," said Brig
Mulaudzi.
He said police are hot on the heels of the
sixth suspect who defrauded SASSA for a
period stretching to 10 years.
The Organised Crime Wing of the South
African Police Service has been on the suspects'
trail for quite some time. This is the
second bust this year as it follows the arrest of
six other ladies, ironically from the same area,
for using the same modus operandi to defraud
the country's social agency of thousands of
rands," added Mulaudzi.
He stressed that police investigations to
establish the origin of certificates and possibly
link other officials in the scam are at an
advanced stage and more arrests are imminent.

A MAN who was arrested for allegedly
raping and robbing a 25 year-old hitch
hiker at The Willows in Hoedspruit in June
has been linked to other criminal activities
in the North West.
Peter Mokoena (33) from Jane Furse in
Sekhukhune is facing charges of rape and
kidnapping in Brits.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel
Malesela Ledwaba said Mokoena
might be linked to more cases of similar
nature in and outside the province.
Mokoena was remanded in custody
until Thursday when he appeared in the
Hoedspruit Magistrate's Court last Wedn
e s d a y.
It is alleged that on June 19, Mokoena
gave a lift to a 25
year old woman
near the Oaks.
The woman was
on her way to Giyani
and along the
way at the Willows
the suspect al-
legedly raped the woman, tied her to a tree
before fleeing the scene with the victim's
items including her hand bag and cellphone.
He then went to the petrol garage and
put on petrol on credit and gave the
victim's belongings as security claiming
the belonged to his wife.
The woman who was left naked was
rescued by a passerby who helped her to
report the matter to the police.
According to Ledwaba, when the
people at the garage realised that he was
not coming back with their money they
went to the police with the items he left
behind to lodge a complaint.
"The police realised that the items belonged
to the victim of rape and later the
suspect was arrested," said Ledwaba
Police are appealing to anyone who
might have been the suspect's victim to

THE South African Police Services, in conjunction
with the Department of Economic
Development, Environment and Tourism and
the Limpopo Liquor Board have declared a
war against illegal spaza shops and unlicensed
liquor outlets.
The provincial police spokesperson Brigadier
Hangwani Mulaudzi said the newly
launched operation will see police confiscate
any groceries and liquor found in unregistered
spaza shop and illegal shebeens.
"Working together with the Liquor Board,
the police will seize any amount of liquor
found at an unregistered outlet, or those which
do not comply with the requirements of the
Liquor Act. These illegal shebeen are the hot
spots of all violent and contact crimes and in
squeezing the space for criminals the police
will close all contributing shebeens," he said.
According to Brig Mulaudzi ,the crime trend
in the province has proven that most contact
crimes reported occur when people are from
or at these businesses.
"Many cases of business robberies reported
have pointed to spaza shops, whose legitimacy
cannot be traced. Illegal foreigners as
well have unregistered businesses all over the
province and have become soft targets for
criminals," said Brig Mulaudzi.

A 36-year-old man appeared in Acornhoek
Magistrate Court on charge of sexual assault.
The Somalian suspect is accused of assaulting
a 9-year-old girl who was left in his
care at Acornhoek old complex.

fuming Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant
General Simon Mpembe.
He added that illegal shebeens sell liquor to
under age youth and that influence the rate of
rapes and robberies which the province has
experienced of late.

THE Organic Earth Market on July 29 was once
again held in the Founders' Circle at Southern
Cross Schools. This market is growing from
strength to strength, thanks to the support of
the Hoedspruit community.
This month's market saw in the region of 24
stall set up at the market.
Products on offer included freshly baked
bread and rusks, home pickled onions and
chilli sauce, herbs and plants, delicious curry
and samoosas and expertly made boere wors
and dry wors.
Collen Wall's "Of the Wall" products were a
fabulous example of how creativity, innovation,
imagination and hard work can lead to
making the most incredible products from
waste. Colleen had beautiful bowls made from

recycled old magazines and animal toys made
from used plastic cold drink bottles were on
d i s p l a y.
It was wonderful to see so many of our
Hoedspruit community members at the market.

The Oaks project

DEPUTY Minister of Water and Environmental
Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, handed over the
R11.4 million to Mopani District Municipality,
as part of Mandela Month celebrations in The
Oaks under Maruleng Municipality.
The Department of Environmental Affairs
through its Environmental Protection and Infrastructure
Programme (EPIP) funded the implementation
of Mopani Waste Recycling and
Buy Back Centre Project in Mopani District
M u n i c i p a l i t y.
The department is using labour intensive
methods as per the requirements of Expanded
Public Works Programme (EPWP).
"The objective of waste recycling is to save
resources as well as to reduce the environmental
impact of waste by reducing the
amount of waste disposed at landfills. To meet
these objectives, waste separation at source
should be pursued as the quality of recyclable
materials is higher when separated at source,"
said Mabudafhasi.
She said In addition recycling has the potential
for job creation and is a viable alternative
to informal salvaging at landfills,
which is undesirable due to problems of health
and safety associated with salvaging.
Mabudafhasi also encouraged the community
of The Oaks to recycling their scraps
during but warn them not to commit crime.
"Recycle everything that you are not using
like old machines and cars but please don't
steal cars and recycle them," said Mabudafhasi.
The project is focused on establishment of
waste recycling and buy-back facilities in
Maruleng, Greater Giyani and Greater Letaba
Local Municipalities respectively.
Each facility comprise of the waste sorting
area, administration block, boundary fence,
main entrance gate, guard house, access road,
parking and paving, signs, bulk infrastructure,
ramp for loading and off-loading.
To this effect, the project has employed 96
local people. They also employ 58 women and
56 young people.
Deepening the Mandela Month activities the
Deputy Minister visited Maatla Primary School
where she led a team of government officials
and community members in executing the
following activities, planting trees (water berry
trees), painting of classrooms, rehabilitating of
a bore hole and connecting a water tank.
Addressing the people at Maatla Primary
School Mabudafhasi urged them to make a
difference in other people's lives and encouraged
everyone to make every day a Mandela
Day.
Community members who attended the
event were also encouraged to get educated as
skilled people are needed for bricklaying,
plumbing and other engineering fields.

Chairs donated to pre-school kids

TWENTY three chairs were donated to
Kgonopele pre-school in Mabins outside
Hoedspruit.
After the pre-school chairperson's plea for
help for resources chairs were donated by
Mariepskop nursery.
"I received a call of need from the chairperson
who told me that there is a pre-school
that did not have any resources. At the same
time Mariepskop nursery were changing their
furniture and other nursery items so I took it to
Kgonopele pre-school," said Maruleng Mu-
nicipal Councilor Christine du Preez.
She said the chairs that were donated are not
enough as they must cater for 72 children and
their five teachers.
Donating furniture to this crèche can make a
huge difference to these less fortunate children.
Your donated desks, tables, sponges and chairs
can give these struggling kids the materials they
needs to succeed.

MTHAMBO Primary School pupils could not
believe their eyes when they saw a lion eating
animal meat at Moholoholo rehab centre last
F r i d a y.
"I heard people saying a lion only eats meat
but after seeing how the lion at Moholoholo
gobbled at the meat, I now believe it is a meat
eater," said Tsundzukani Khosa a grade 5
pupil.
Tsundzukani said that he is happy that his
parents paid for the trip as he learned a lot
about animals even though he is still puzzled
about the vulture's communication during
meal time.
He said that he saw a (Khosa Mabona)
Bateleur Eagle eat the animal's eye before the
vultures could come eat.
Tsundzukani was not the only puzzled one,
Joy Mahlabane (9) praised the vulture by
saying that it provided and fed its chicks meat
before letting other vultures to come near the
meat.
Gugu Mathebula an educator at Mthambo
primary said the kids visited Moholoholo rehab
centre, Snake Park and Hoedspruit town
was their last stop.

Five challenging positions exist to oversee Environmental Monitors within five different Monitoring
Programmes in the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere Reserve as part of the Expanded Public Works
Programme. These are fixed-term contract positions up to the end of 31 March 2015.
The successful candidates will collate and manage data gathered by Environmental Monitors
working in the K2C Biosphere Region and will provide technical assistance, support and
technology transfer for research projects in compliance with scientific parameters/standards.
Key performance areas: • Collate, capture, process, summarise and interpret technical data
for internal recommendations for relevant host organisation project(s) • Coordinate, collate
and synthese data collected by Environmental Monitors across sectors • Control the quality
of environmental data and give feedback to host organisations • Write reports to inform key
deliverables • Offer technical and logistical support to Environmental Monitors • Assist with
the training and skills development of Environmental Monitors • Supervise specified activities
of Environmental Monitors • Communicate, liaise with and report to appropriate role-players
• Perform programme administrative duties related to the position.
Minimum requirements: • A tertiary qualification in Nature Conservation, Environmental or
Animal Health or related field • Fully computer literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft
Office software packages such as Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint • A valid Code 08 driver’s
licence and own transport • Excellent communication skills (English), both written and verbal,
and the ability to prepare various reports • The ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• No criminal record • Medical fitness • Own vehicle (for project-related work) and housing.

Girls start season on high note
THE Southern Cross College 1st girls' cricket
team travelled to Polokwane on last Saturday
to play their first inter-schools match of the
season. The team was hosted by their
opponents, Capricorn High, who has a
formidable record in girls' cricket.
The Southern Cross girls won the toss and
elected to bat first. The bowling was tight and
scoring was difficult. They managed to score
91 runs all out with Michaela Naude top
scoring with 20.
The Southern Cross girls then went in to
field, determined to defend their rather modest
score. Their bowling was good and they lim-

margins, just four runs. Abigale Smit and
Michaela Naude were the pick of the bowlers,
taking four wickets each. Elizabeth Tseka
weighed in with the other two wickets.

beste van sy vermoë toe te rus nie.
Terwyl ander leerders lekker vakansie kon
hou, moes hulle ure lank op die rugbyveld

Dit was egter louter genot vir die mannetjies
wat reeds die smaak van sukses geproe het.
Donderdag, 27 Julie, het die span die pad na
die suide aangepak om hulle plek oop te veg
tydens die Bondedag wat in Pretoria gehou is.
Tydens hierdie geleentheid moes hulle bewys

Equestrians strut their stuff
A TEAM of four riders from the Hoedspruit
Christian School have taken part in the four
SANESA Schools Equestrian qualifying events
this year.
The riders took part in Show Jumping, Equitation,
Dressage and Performance riding
classes.
The young participants must take part in no
less than three qualifiers to stand a chance of
being selected to represent Limpopo Province
at the Regional event in August.
The selections will be made from the best
points throughout the year. They would like
wish the riders all the best for the selection

Kleuters baat by miniatuur perdryskool
HOEDSPRUIT Herald het Saterdag ‘n interessante
ontdekking gedoen toe hulle besoek by
River Bend Lodge afgelê het en besef het dat
daar 'n perdryskool vir kleuters is.
Manjhani ryskool het in 2007 met net 1 kind
geopen. Maar het binne 1 jaar gegroei tot 45
kindertjies wat weekliks lesse gekry het.
’Ons was genoodsaak om later groter perde
aan te skaf, want soos die kinders ouer geword
het wou hul steeds deel van Manjhani ryskool
b l y. ’
Die doel van die ryskool bied balans vir
kinders asook spiertonus, maar dit kan ook die
kind se emosionele welstand, selfvertroue en
skoolpunte verbeter.
Met miniatuur perdjies is dit soveel makliker
om 'n kind in beheer te plaas ten opsigte van
die versorging, hantering en die ry van die
perde. Kinders tot en met 5 jaar kan hulle ry, en
daarom maak dit 'n fantastiese opsie as 'n
"first pony".

SCS climbers on the up and up
A CORE group of Southern Cross climbers in
the College is progressing in leaps and
bounds.
On an outing to Waterval Boven everyone
led routes this past weekend, with Ryan Strong
(Grade 10) "on-sighting" a grade 17 climb, and
Matthew Wilkinson-Luck also leading a grade
17 climb.
Everyone also managed to top-rope a grade
19 climb. The team is almost at the point where
some of them will be able to hold their own at
a Mpumalanga schools event, according to Mr
Behne.

young climbers are reaching new heights.
