Admission Information for Spring 2014<br />

Diploma in Applied Science: Major in Nursing (PN)<br />

The Diploma in Health Science Major in Practical Nursing Program prepares graduates to provide direct<br />

patient care in a safe, effective manner across multiple settings and prepares students for licensure<br />

examination for practical nurses (NCLEX-PN). The course of study includes both theory presentation and<br />

supervised clinical experiences at affiliating health care agencies.<br />

APPLICATION PROCESS:<br />

After the application date has passed, all applications meeting the minimum requirement are reviewed by the Nursing<br />

Admissions Committee. Spaces are allotted to those most qualified as determined by the point system on this application.<br />

Candidates earning equal points are ranked based on their cumulative GPA.<br />

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:<br />

To apply the student must complete MAT110, ENG101, PSY201, BIO210 and BIO 211 with a grade of C or better prior<br />

to starting in the PN Program in January.<br />

Applicants to the PN program must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (considering all academic course work, including<br />

prerequisites, within the last 10 years).<br />

Applicants may not have achieved less than a “C” grade (D, F, or WF) in any two previously taken nursing courses with in<br />

the last 5 years at any school (LPN or RN).<br />

All applicants must take the TEAS exam prior to application to the program. This standardized pre-nursing aptitude test is<br />

offered at the ATC Testing Center located in Room 742 of the 700-800 building, (803) 508-7488. Proctored testing is<br />

offered by appointment or during the following hours: Mondays & Thursdays 8:00AM-6:00PM, Tuesdays & Wednesdays<br />

8:00AM-5:00PM, Fridays 9:00AM-1:00PM, Saturdays 9:00AM-1:30PM. Plan 3 hours for this computer-based exam. This<br />

exam can be taken twice per academic year 30 days apart from the first attempt, and the testing date must be within 3 years<br />

of the application deadline. A TEAS review book can be purchased from the ATC bookstore.<br />

All prerequisite courses must be completed before applying to the nursing program. Only the 1 st or 2 nd attempted grades of<br />

the prerequisite courses taken within the last 10 years will be considered for the scoring matrix. The grade of a “W” or<br />

“WF” will count as an attempt. Please refer to the program display.<br />

Credit can be awarded for eligible Advanced Placement (AP) coursework. Must provide valid proof of successfully<br />

passing the AP exam. Points will be awarded based on the assigned grade on your high school transcript.<br />

Students completing courses through non-ATC exemption exams should note that no points are awarded for the successful<br />

completion of a CLEP or DANTES examination.<br />

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit official TOEFL scores. A minimum score of 78 on the<br />

computer-based exam is required to be eligible to apply to the nursing program. English as a Second Language (ESL)<br />

courses are strongly recommended.<br />

A criminal background check is required prior to clinical rotations and repeated annually. Depending on the result of the<br />

background check, a student may not be able to participate in clinical and may be withdrawn from the program.<br />

Once admitted to the program, students must submit documentation of the following: a physical exam, TB skin test or<br />

chest x-ray for previously positive TB skin tests, current immunizations, current Healthcare Provider CPR certification,<br />

and annual drug screening. Students applying to the program must be physically able to meet the requirements of all<br />

clinical areas.<br />
