Profiling A Position
The Subject Matter Expert (SME) and the WorkKeys® Profiler work
together on the four steps to profiling a position:
1. Compile a list of the most critical job tasks.
2. Decide which WorkKeys® skills are associated with the tasks.
3. Determine the on-the-job behaviors associated with each skill.
4. Select the WorkKeys® entry and effective skill levels for of the position.

Step 1 - Developing A Critical Task List
.
• SME reviews task list from Dictionary of Occupational Titles for relevance
and comprehensiveness
• SME deletes tasks unimportant to the position
• SME ranks each task on Importance and Relative Time Spent
• Criticality = Importance x Relative Time Spent
• SME reviews task list Criticality ratings and refines list to the most critical
tasks for the position
Step 2 - Critical Tasks Assigned to a
WorkKeys Skill
• SME and Profiler discuss how the WorkKeys® skills are required for the
performance of each task
.• SME and Profiler identify the tasks associated with each skill (tasks may be
associated with more than one skill)
Step 3 - On-The-Job Behaviors
• SME identifies the on-the-job behaviors and activities that require a
particular skill (ex: writes, edits, and publishes educational and technical
brochures to explain and promote the activities of the college).
• SME and Profiler review the descriptions of WorkKeys® skills needed to
