PIPING BANNERS — CALLING ALL CRAFTSPEOPLE
At the last council meeting, the
suggestion was put forward that it would
be good to have a bagpipe banner for
Astie’s pipes. The banner ties on to the
drone. Since Astie is both Lochiel’s piper
and the piper for the Association, the
banner could have Lochiel’s colours on one
side and those of the Association on the
other. If anyone or any group is interested
in undertaking this project, please contact
the editor in the first instance for further
particulars.
Battle of Harlaw Commemoration
Page 14
This is the general pattern
although it need not be
scalloped
Our President, Duncan, attended the 600th anniversary of the Battle
of Harlaw on Sunday 24th July. This battle which resulted from an
attempt by the Lord of the Isles to expand his territory ended indecisively
after a great deal of bloodshed on both sides. Donald, Lord of
the Isles was met by a troop led by the Earl of Mar. Donald Dubh
rose in support of Donald and many Camerons were slain. Duncan
laid a wreath on behalf of the Association. As a postscript to this
event, it transpired that The Trade Guild
of Aberdeen acquired the sword of
Donald Dubh but returned it to the family
in 1790. In return the Guild received a
jewelled dirk together with the
correspondence of the time.
THE RED CROSS ROSE
Page 19
Recently one of our members,
Sonia Cameron Jacks was
attending the Strathpeffer
Games. She was stopped by a
member of the Red Cross who
had a stall at the games and was
informed that, to date, the rose
had raised £12.5 million. This is a
quite remarkable achievement.
The rose painting is the work of
the late Elizabeth Cameron of
Allangrange who was an aunt of Lochiel. This is a fine example of her
wonderful botanical drawings which are both beautiful and intricate.
