Current research project
Title Plasmonic optical fibre sensing platforms: study of light coupling and optimization for in situ
(bio)chemical detection
Abstract Optical fibres yield miniaturized sensors that can be distributed, remotely monitored and inserted into
small spaces, allowing their use in numerous fields. Fibre gratings surrounded by a sensitive layer
open the way to in situ (bio)chemical sensing, offering great, perhaps even revolutionary, capabilities
of sensor deployment. Every application implies to design the probe (optimization of the grating
physical parameters) according to the sensitive layer properties. This development constitutes a
recent research direction that I have initiated and for which a fruitful research environment exists. In
that context, this project is aimed to elaborate sensing platforms based on innovative plasmonic fibre
gratings, with objectives that go far beyond the current achievements.
The research program is segmented in three interconnected fields:
(1) Photonics, with the aim to study and experiment light coupling mechanisms in radiative fibre
gratings manufactured by a femtosecond pulsed laser;
(2) Plasmonics, with the aim to explore light-matter interactions;
2/15 (last update: February 2013)
(3) (Bio-)chemical optical sensing, related to a recently acquired Starting Independent Researcher
Grant funded by the European Research Council (ERC), which is possible thanks to collaborations
with (bio-)chemists. Here, the sensing platforms will be coated by specific sensitive layers to address
gas detection and label-free biorecognition.
With a triple approach including design, numerical simulations and experiments, the proposed “labon-fibre”
sensing platforms will yield a non-invasive technique able to take up future challenges in
security and healthcare such as pipe-lines monitoring and in vivo diagnosis.
