F or more than a quarter century, the Community musiC sChool of springfield has been dedicated to making arts education, particularly music, affordable and accessible to our community. We bring together children, teens and adults in an environment that respects diversity and fosters creativity. CMSS celebrates the rich cultural heritage and sense of community that music and the arts inspire in all of us. Our summer session, while shorter than our typical fall and spring semesters is the perfect time to take a music lesson on an instrument that suits you and to engage in musical activities with others just like you. Whether interested in an individual lesson or participating in one of our lively summer music sampler classes, children and adults can combine a love and fascination for music making. Located in an historic Art Deco designed 1930’s building, the Community Music School of Springfield welcomes everyone. Our professional teaching faculty of fifty performing musicians and highly skilled music instructors bring many years of teaching experience and they take pride in the musical activities offered to more than 800 students annually. F iddlers SESSION 1 MUSIC SAMPLER: SESSION 2 MUISC SAMPLER: JULY 3rd - JULY 27th July 31st – August 24th young Children Four Ages: 4-5 yr olds - Introduction to violin This program provides parents and children with a relaxed opportunity to become interested in learning to play the violin by getting involved in musical games and listening to different styles of music . Children will learn the parts of the violin, names of strings and how to pluck and use the bow. Music & Movement Ages: 3-5 yr olds. Parents and caregivers are invited to participate along with their children. Music & Movement is a perfect place for kids to jump in and get a head start on their musical education. Since children absorb much of the world around them through their bodies we introduce musical concepts such as rhythm and dynamics with movement games. Music & movement is a great place for kids to work on fine and gross motor skills, speech and vocal development, expressive movement, and important social skills like patience and turn taking. Class will include warm ups, scales, reed adjusting and ensemble playing Day: Thursday Dates: July 12th, 19th, & 26th, Time: 11am-12pm. August 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd Instructor: Becky Eldredge Tuition: $117.00 Class Size: 4 students Trio Music Level required: Sixth graders with 1 year of prior study. Class will include warm-ups, tone production, listening skills and ensemble playing. Day: Thursday July Dates: July 12th, 19th, &26th Time: 4pm-4:45pm August Dates: 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd Instructor: Becky Eldredge Tuition: $117.00 Class Size: 3 students Budding Drummers Dream Ages: 8-12 yr olds An introduction into the world of percussion. One half- hour of learning basic techniques: how to hold drumsticks, basic counting with Jason Arnold. One half- hour learning ensembles, marching and street beats with Rick Marshall. One half hour of working with mallets, timpani, marimba with Kevin Sharpe.
