RFD THE FIRM<br />
RFD is a firm of laboratory design consultants focused exclusively on the programming and<br />
design of laboratory buildings for industry, healthcare, research and education. Located in San<br />
Diego, California, RFD’s staff of architects, engineers, and laboratory planners work cohesively<br />
to provide seamless project management and delivery.<br />
Since its incorporation in 1984, the firm has provided laboratory design services for more than<br />
one thousand projects in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Malaysia,<br />
Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Egypt. These projects represent a wide range of facility and client types,<br />
including Biomedical, Bioscience, Physical Science, Engineering and Nanotechnology<br />
<strong>Research</strong>, University and College teaching facilities for private and public institutions, and<br />
scientific research institutions. The firm has also provided laboratory design services for<br />
Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical companies and a variety of research buildings for the<br />
Federal Government.<br />
ACADEMIC BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH<br />
RFD’s successful experience in laboratory design is based on an interactive design approach<br />
which helps create inventive solutions for each client’s specialized requirements. RFD has<br />
provided laboratory consulting for many of the worlds most prestigious and established<br />
research institutes such as The Wellcome Trust, The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, The<br />
Scripps <strong>Research</strong> Institute, Hauptman Woodward Institute, and Children’s Memorial Medical<br />
Center. This experience has afforded us a comprehensive knowledge of the many issues<br />
facing scientific research today.<br />
UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE<br />
RFD’s work with more than 275 academic institutions throughout the U.S. on several hundred<br />
laboratory building projects has positioned the firm to advise colleges and universities regarding<br />
the types of teaching, research and support spaces are most appropriate to meet its specific<br />
requirements. RFD serves this role through iterative, interactive, participatory on-campus work<br />
sessions with the faculty, staff, students and administration during which goals and objectives<br />
are discussed, along with teaching methodologies, class sizes and functional requirements. For<br />
teaching laboratories, RFD will develop and present alternative solutions supporting different<br />
pedagogical styles for consideration by the faculty. These alternatives often include such issues<br />
as fixed vs. movable benches, overhead vs. floor-mounted distribution of services, Integration<br />
of technology, combination laboratory/lecture layouts, and layouts which promote “workshop”<br />
or “discovery-based” pedagogies.<br />
ENGINEERING<br />
RFD offers a wealth of experience in the highly technical areas of Engineering Teaching and<br />
<strong>Research</strong> laboratories. Understanding the special needs for high bay, cleanroom technology,<br />
special services such as high pressure air, high pressure steam, high volume cooling water<br />
systems and heavy structural and electrical loads allows RFD to program working engineering<br />
space to meet each client’s diverse and often unique requirements. State of the art teaching<br />
and research facilities such as UCSD’s high bay structures laboratory where multi-story building<br />
systems are shaken to destruction to simulate earthquake forces, the sprawling 1.5 million GSF<br />
Engineering, Science & Technology <strong>Facilities</strong> for the University Teknology Petronas in Kuala<br />
Lumpur, Malaysia, and the Center for Nano-Fabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly at<br />
Northwestern University all demonstrate RFD’s comprehensive abilities to support the<br />
development of very technical engineering facilities.<br />
BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOPHARMACEUTICAL<br />
The special environments needed for drug discovery, development and scale-up offer rigorous<br />
challenges to the laboratory designer. RFD’s experience in navigating these physical and<br />
regulatory challenges has developed over many years of involvement with small start-up firms<br />
as well as established Pharmaceutical Companies. <strong>Design</strong> of cleanrooms for pharmaceutical<br />
and biotechnology scale-up and production, as well as quality assurance and testing<br />
laboratories requires a thorough understand of USFDA regulations for cGMP and GLP<br />
compliance. Projects such as Biogen Idec’s research center Nobel Laboratory and<br />
Genentech’s NIMO production facility demonstrate RFD’s understanding of these specialized<br />
issues. Projects for Amgen, Roche and Novartis along with numerous collaborations of start-up<br />
biotechnology clients further showcase RFD’s proven ability in this highly challenging field.<br />
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT<br />
RFD has experience with a wide range of federal government agencies ranging from the U.S.<br />
Department of Energy, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Geological Survey,<br />
Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Customs Service, and the<br />
National Marine Fisheries Service.<br />
LISTEN, THEN LEAD<br />
After we listen to the administration, investigators, departmental staff and facilities<br />
representatives, we prepare alternatives which address the issues with solutions driven by longterm<br />
value. RFD leads the team through the initial concept development phase - we are<br />
committed to leadership.<br />

PROGRAMMING<br />
From the initial project kick-off meeting, where the planning process is extensively discussed,<br />
through the completion of construction, RFD remains an integral part of the project team.<br />
RFD works closely with the client and architect through interviews with researchers,<br />
administrative staff and planning staff to determine specific design requirements for each<br />
space. Utilizing customized questionnaire forms, room data sheets and equipment lists, each<br />
space is thoroughly reviewed with the appropriate representatives to define the size, optimum<br />
configuration, security, plumbing, electrical, and environmental parameters necessary for the<br />
spaces to properly function.<br />
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS<br />
During the <strong>Design</strong> Phase, we work with the architect and engineer to resolve laboratory related<br />
design issues. In addition, we produce detailed design development drawings based on our<br />
interviews with the researchers, administrators and planning staff personnel. The laboratory<br />
related design criteria for the building systems are determined and recommendations are<br />
made to allow the design team to proceed efficiently.<br />
CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION<br />
During Construction RFD works with the design team to review Contractors RFI’s, provide<br />
clarification for laboratory related design issues, and review shop drawings and submittals for<br />
laboratory furnishings and equipment. We also perform construction site visits to observe the<br />
progress of the laboratory installation and to prepare punch-list reports of deficiencies requiring<br />
correction or completion by the Contractor. In this manner, RFD helps ensure that the<br />
completed project meets the intended design goals and provides valuable feedback for<br />
application on our future projects.<br />
SPECIALIST ENGINEERING SERVICES<br />
Because we focus solely on laboratory facilities we have developed methods and tools to deal<br />
with critical issues that seem to arise on every project.<br />
For example, we have developed programs to calculate heat gain/cooling loads for<br />
laboratory equipment based on use factors. After each project is completed the loads are<br />
summarized in our database by discipline. This summary allows us to provide accurate load<br />
estimates during the early design phases with confidence based on facts systematically<br />
compiled over time. In this manner we have eliminated (well, minimized) the widely disputed<br />
discussion of diversity of connected load converted to cooling loads.<br />
We have developed similar tools to plan animal facilities, determine heat gain from animals,<br />
and size cage and rack washing equipment. These programs are on our LAN, accessible to<br />
our project managers by laptop computer.<br />
The goal of these specialized tools and design capabilities is to provide the building architects<br />
and engineers with specific information, not easily obtainable elsewhere, to guide the design<br />
team regarding systems design.<br />
COST ESTIMATING<br />
RFD prepares construction cost estimates for laboratory furnishings and equipment. Our broad<br />
database of this laboratory cost information is useful during programming and design to help<br />
us determine the appropriate budget. During schematic design and design development<br />
phases we prepare quantity takeoffs and detailed cost estimates for laboratory equipment. We<br />
can then coordinate with the building cost consultant and/or CM to agree on appropriate<br />
budgets.<br />
BENCHMARKING<br />
We have a formal process to compile the critical information from our work into a database<br />
(we call the information “Critical Ratios”) which allows us to compare the construction cost,<br />
net/gross ratios, equipment cooling loads and other information from similar projects to the<br />
information generated during programming and design. This comparison allows the team to<br />
make corrections and adjustments early in the process, and helps avoid the possibility of<br />
overlooking important issues such as equipment cooling loads, power, and piped services for<br />
Group II Equipment. RFD’s broad range of experiences allows us to apply our benchmarking<br />
data to validate project budgets and programming early in the process.<br />

This project includes 31,000 NSF of animal<br />
research space within A 67,300 GSF building. The<br />
project renovated a warehouse into a<br />
sophisticated, multi-barrier vivarium. The project<br />
includes the addition of a second-level interstitial<br />
space to house MEP infrastructure. The corridor<br />
system is a unidirectional loop corridor with<br />
unidirectional single corridors within each suite.<br />
The holding rooms and procedure rooms were<br />
designed using a highly flexible and<br />
interchangeable layout, incorporating movable<br />
casework furnishings in procedure rooms.<br />
Specialized facilities include a complex<br />
Cagewash Facility and an Imaging Suite. The<br />
cagewash suite incorporates automated<br />

houses the highly automated analytical testing<br />
equipment for Kaiser Permanente’s Northern<br />
California Regional Laboratory. The design is for<br />
a single, large open laboratory with several<br />
small ancillary functional spaces. Laboratory<br />
space is provided for Central Specimen<br />
Processing, Automated Chemistry,<br />
Immunochemistry, Toxicology, Urine Testing,<br />
