Jos was already crawling in the pigeon lofts of his
father before he had grown out of his nappy, and later
he couldn’t be kept away. At school he spent more
time thinking about the pigeons than concentrating
on the lessons… and during his free time he often
visited his experienced ‘teacher’… Jan Grondelaers
in Opglabbeek! It was already clear… that pigeons
were going to play an important role in his life! It has
all gone in breakneck speed since the period 1977-
’91 when Jos was loft carer by (future) father-in-law
Thomas Peeters & Sons in As. Thomas had asked
‘father Thoné’ if he was interested in taking care of
the loft for him. But he didn’t think he could manage
all the work and so suggested that his son Jos (then
16 years old) could help Thomas in cleaning the lofts.
In addition to the mounds of droppings that Jos had
scraped together there in the Grotstraat, he soon became
familiar with the Peeters pigeons, and learned
the first tricks of the trade. Relying on the experience
of his future father-in-law Thomas and ‘scientifically
supported’ by brother-in-law, veterinary surgeon Nor-
2
bert Peeters, Jos soon brought the Peeters-colony
to the top of the international pigeon sport, with a
title of ‘General Nat. Champion KBDB’ and 2 national
victories as signboard. It seemed that Jos Thoné was
capable of so much more than just cleaning the lofts
he could let the pigeons flourish and bring them to a
climax! The line of their ‘Gouden Grijze’, and pigeons
so as the ‘Boeing’, ‘Pegasus’, the ‘Reus’, the ‘Witte
Reus’, the ‘Korte Bek’, the ‘Perigueux’, the ‘Generaal’,
the ‘Kleine Molenaar’ and not least the figurehead
‘Diego Armando Barcelona’ were kneaded by
Jos Thoné into pigeons with ‘world fame’. What noone
can claim with certainty… but what can easily be
seen by everybody, is… that the basis was laid here
for a pigeon career, the like of which has never been
known before!
Butterflies in the stomach…
Jos not only gained experience with the pigeons
by Thomas Peeters… he also had ‘butterflies’ in
the stomach. Because Jos had taken a fancy to the
