Like many others, the Indianapolis Zoological Society 

recognizes the profound challenge of sustaining the 

wonders of our planet for future generations. Fortunately, 

thanks to the generosity and support of our leaders and 

friends (and the talent and experience of our staff and 

volunteer team), we have become an organization capable 

of making a real difference for the future, while we contribute 

today toward the quality of life in our community. 

Today, we share an opportunity to help save the most 

endangered great ape species––the orangutans––while 

creating a stronger, more capable future for both the 

Indianapolis Zoo and the many animal species we are 

working to preserve. 

The Indianapolis Zoo Campaign for Conservation and 

Community Phase II––Saving the Orangutans, represents 

far more than a fundraising campaign for a new exhibit. 

It also stands for, in many ways, the Indianapolis Zoo’s 

coming of age, as it defines us not only as a truly worldclass 

zoo but also as a global conservation organization. 

It will certainly establish the world’s best zoo exhibit in 

our community, and it will also help save orangutans in 

the wild. It will elevate understanding, education, and 

economic development here at home and will advance 

Indianapolis’ leadership image around the world. 

The $30 million Campaign for Conservation and 

Community is an ambitious undertaking and includes 2011’s 

Tiger Forest; the 2012 renovation of the Zoo’s front plaza; 

Flights of Fancy: A Brilliance of Birds presented by Citizens 

Energy Group opening in May 2012; an exciting (yes, we 

said exciting!) new addition to White River Gardens for 

2013; and, finally the International Orangutan Center. 

All of the projects are steps forward in the advancement 

of our Mission: empowering people and communities, 

both locally and globally, to advance animal conservation.

In 2011, our intent was to re-imagine our existing Amur 

tiger exhibit into something really special, which we called 

Tiger Forest. In the planning stages, we all told ourselves 

that we knew what it would be like to look at a tiger 

eye-to-eye. But even zoo veterans were astonished at the

impact of this very close encounter with one of the Earth’s 

most spectacular wild creatures. Zoo visitors made an 

immediate connection with these stunningly beautiful 

and tragically rare animals. 

Guest experiences ran the gamut from sheer awe to the 

deepest happiness, gained from having such a suddenly 

intimate encounter with an animal that possesses an 

unsurpassed combination of power, intensity, beauty, 

grace, and predatory instincts. Recognizing the tiger as 

apex predator, however, is only one reaction. As witnessed 

by the countless YouTube videos, Facebook postings 

and hundreds of tweets on Twitter, young people are 

fascinated. That’s exactly the impression we hoped for 

because once emotionally invested, it’s a short journey 

to being informed and then empowered to help save 

wild tigers. 

The announcement of the International Orangutan Center 

late in 2011 brought our mission into even greater focus. 

The International Orangutan Center will be the powerful 

first step in the creation of a comprehensive International 

Great Ape Center and in making the Indianapolis Zoo 

an even stronger resource for leadership, education, 

conservation, research, and economic development. 

This is an exhibit that will change the world. 

Creating change is what zoos, especially ours, is all about. 

Not only are we an economic driver for our community, 

we are leaders in promoting the practice of sustainability–– 

the process by which we will preserve the future for our 

children. We conserve energy through green practices, 

recycling and reusing materials and teaching the principles 

of conserving the natural world. The Indianapolis Prize 

honors those heroes around the globe who work daily to 

save our most precious resources––the endangered wild 

things and wild places of our planet. 

We could not accomplish any of our programs and plans 

without the support of the generous donors whose names 

are included in this report and whose commitment to 

the future we share and honor. The gifts you have given

Zoo BaBIes Make HIstoRy 

At 5:34 a.m. on July 20, 2011, African elephant Kubwa gave birth 

to a female calf weighing 238 pounds, representing yet another 

milestone in elephant reproduction in human care. The calf, 

named Kalina, was the third one born to Kubwa through 

artificial insemination (AI). This is the first time any elephant 

and elephant staff in the world accomplished three AI births 

with the same elephant. 

The Indianapolis Zoo has long been a leader in elephant 

reproduction research, including the first and second successful 

African elephant AI births in the world. We have had five 

successful elephant births since 2000, each one tremendously 

exciting and important for the future of elephants. The work 

that the Indianapolis Zoo has accomplished in researching and 

performing AI procedures laid the foundation for a marked 

increase in successful elephant births worldwide. 

Although she was undoubtedly the most popular baby at 

the Indianapolis Zoo in 2011, Kalina was not the only adorable 

youngster to make her debut last year. Five extremely active 

ringtail lemurs kept visitors entertained by leaping from branch 

to branch on their island exhibit. Behind the scenes, a rare 

crowned lemur was born, the only birth of this endangered 

species in the United States in 2011. Two kudus were born in 

Plains, along with another addition to the herd of the highly 

endangered Addra gazelles, a charming little Guinea baboon 

named Romeo, and a gorgeous young male giraffe named Jasiri. 

In Oceans, we welcomed a rockhopper penguin chick, the first 

progeny from a rockhopper mom that was also born at the Zoo 

– and a whole bunch of tiny little jelly polyps––the first time 

we have accomplished jelly reproduction on-site. In another 

first for the Zoo, we became the only institution to successfully 

reproduce and raise dogsharks to 1 year of age and older. 

If the young represent the future, then the Zoo is well 

positioned for years to come.

Beasts and BeautIes 

For spring 2011, the Zoo offered visitors 

something truly special––the opening of 

three new exhibits simultaneously. 

Bats took center stage in the Forests Biome. 

Two species of the much mythologized and 

underappreciated bat are featured, including 

straw colored fruit bats and island flying foxes. 

Both bats have wingspans that range from two to 

four feet. Exotic, yes, but very important, as are all 

bats, to the pollination of more than 130 families 

of plants worldwide and to the control of insect 

populations. Wrapped inside their winged capes, 

our bats help tell the story of how bats in the 

wild are threatened by loss of habitat, pesticides, 

parasites, climate change, and disease. 

The newest additions to the Plains Biome are 

African warthogs, a very sturdy variety of pig that 

bears only a passing resemblance to its domestic 

cousin. Covered in bristly hairs and knotty wartlike 

projections on its face, the warthog’s most 

fearsome weapons are its razor sharp curved 

tusks and overall nasty disposition. This is not an 

animal to confront if it can be avoided, a good 

rule of thumb to also follow if you encounter its 

companions in the exhibit––the African crested 

porcupines. Far larger and more dangerous than 

the North American variety of porcupine, our pair 

of father and daughter quilled porcupines proved 

to be the surprise hit of the spring, entertaining 

visitors with their near constant exploring, 

chewing, and digging of massive holes. 

Meanwhile, over in White River Gardens, the Hilbert 

Conservatory was filled with exotic specimens from 

the world’s largest family of flowering plants––the 

orchids. OMG! Orchids (that’s odd, magical and 

gorgeous orchids) represented a new collaboration 

between the Indianapolis Zoo and Ball State 

University, home to the renowned Wheeler 

Orchid Collection. Representative plants from the 

university’s collection of more than 1,800 orchids 

took turns as the featured flowers, wowing visitors 

with their diversity and floral charm.

BRInGInG up taZ 

On January 13, 2011, a 6-month-old male dolphin calf was 

discovered at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on 

Sanibel Island, Florida. There were no other dolphins in 

sight; even his mother was nowhere to be found. Like 

most mammals, a dolphin calf requires intensive parental 

care early in life––it would never be left alone without 

good cause. 

Shortly after he was found, he was transported to a rescue 

facility at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota. The staff 

named him Taz and cared for him around the clock with 

supplemental feedings, observations, and getting him 

acclimated to people. For Taz, this was just the beginning 

of an incredible adventure. Since he could not be released 

back into the wild, a good home had to be found for 

him—and quickly. 

The Indianapolis Zoo was honored to be chosen to receive 

Taz. One factor was that our dolphin group includes males 

and females with their offspring, ranging 

in age from 9 to 20+ years old. Another determining 

factor was the excellent reputation of our staff, which 

has extensive experience working with dolphins and other 

marine mammals, such as seals, sea lions, walruses, and 

polar bears. Now we’ve set a precedent as the only inland 

institution ever to receive a rescued dolphin. 

The transport of Taz from Sarasota to Indianapolis could 

not have gone more smoothly. He was moved from Mote, to 

the airport, where he went onto a chartered plane. Once he 

landed at Indianapolis International Airport, he was placed 

in a truck to be transported to the Zoo. Pool to pool was 

accomplished in only four and a half hours. 

The process of caring for, training, and incorporating this 

youngster into the Zoo’s dolphin group was done very 

carefully and methodically throughout the year. He was 

gradually weaned onto a fish diet and gently introduced 

to the other members of the group. Beginning with near 

24-hour human care and gradually tapering off to a normal 

Zoo day, Taz was cared for by marine mammal and vet 

staff with devotion and dedication. Extremely playful from 

the start, Taz enjoys interactions with the staff and other 

dolphins (and all his toys), and he took to training right 

away, even doing a few turns and twists during the shows 

beginning in early 2012. 

We will never know what happened to Taz’s mother and 

pod, but there’s comfort in knowing he has a future here 

and is part of the team that brings the message of ocean 

conservation to Zoo visitors.

ReMakInG tHe FutuRe 

tHRouGH conseRvatIon 

preserving the threatened and endangered animals 

of the world is a large and tremendous challenge, but 

conservationists like those supported by the Indianapolis 

Zoo have dedicated their lives to developing strategies 

and solutions that ultimately have a positive impact. In 

2011, your support of the Zoo helped these pieces fall 

into place for amur tigers in the Russian Far east, as well 

as lions, elephants, and cheetahs in africa.

For the Amur tigers that Dr. Linda Kerley and the other 

members of the Amur Tiger Conservation Project study in 

Lazovsky Preserve in Primorsky Krai, the Indianapolis Zoo’s 

support paid for 15 vitally important tracking cameras 

that give Linda long-distance insight into the lives of the 

last few remaining wild Amur tigers on Earth. Camera 

traps were also instrumental in establishing a deterrent 

program for poachers called “forest eyes” that uses 

hidden surveillance cameras to record illegal activity 

in protected tiger habitat. 

Dr. Bernard Kissui of the African Wildlife Foundation is 

saving lions through literally mending fences. Not fences 

that keep lions in but fences that protect livestock at night 

from being eaten by lions. Lions killed in retaliation for 

dead livestock are estimated to account for up to 20 

percent of all lion deaths in the area. Small corrals or 

“bomas” used by the local Maasai peoples to protect their 

livestock at night are traditionally made from thorny 

brush or poles, which are no match for lions. Support 

provided by the Zoo in 2011 helped Kissui build 50 

predator-proof bomas using chain-link fencing, providing 

more economic security for families and a secure future 

for the 170 lions that live in the area. 

2011 marked the fifth year that the Zoo has provided 

substantial support to Dr. Charles Foley and his amazing 

work through the Tarangire Elephant Project to fit 

together the puzzle of establishing corridors through 

n 

rapidly expanding settlement areas so that elephants 

and humans can live side by side. Agreements with villages 

have resulted in the establishment of corridors through 

village lands to allow the elephants to move out of the 

Tarangire National Park into calving grounds vital to the 

long-term survival of the population. The Zoo’s support 

pays for the game scouts that track these elephants, as 

well as travel and communication with the local villagers 

to maintain these easements. 

Meanwhile, our Race-a-Cheetah activity at the Zoo raised 

more than $15,000 for the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 

Namibia in 2011. There is really no other zoo activity like 

this in the world, in which the tie between the activity 

itself (testing your speed against that of the cheetah) 

and contributing to saving the animals in the wild is 

so entwined. In the two years since we began Race-a- 

Cheetah, more than 60,000 young Zoo visitors have 

participated, and their contributions––gathered 50 cents 

at a time––add up to a total of almost $30,000 since 2010. 

Their donations in 2011 paid for the care of two orphaned 

cheetahs for a year, two litters of livestock-guarding 

Kangal puppies, and the medical workup and release 

of three wild cheetahs. 

closeR to HoMe 

luGaR eneRGy patRIot aWaRd 

In 2011, the Indianapolis Zoo was named a Lugar Energy 

Patriot, an honor bestowed on organizations that support 

renewable energy sources and energy conservation, by 

Indiana Senator Richard Lugar. We earned this prestigious 

citation through a whole host of green practices that 

support the concept of sustainability in our operations.

electRonIcs RecyclInG 

The Zoo typically hosts two electronics recycling events 

each year––one in the spring and one in the fall. On 

average, we collect 15–20 tons of electronics at each of 

these two-day events. But in late 2011, we partnered with 

the Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee’s 1st and 

Green program to host a third electronics recycling 

event in December and broke our record for the most 

electronics collected at a Zoo event. With the help of 

our partner RecycleForce, we collected more than 23 

tons in just over five hours. 

MycaRBonpledGe.coM 

Mycarbonpledge.com is now in its fourth year, and we’ve 

made progress in reducing CO2 emissions by more than 

15.5 million pounds to date through almost 9,000 pledges. 

This is the equivalent of taking more than 1,300 cars off 

the road. 

polaR BeaRs InteRnatIonal 

The Indianapolis Zoo was awarded the Paw of Approval 

Award in April 2011 by Polar Bears International. The Zoo has 

been an Arctic Ambassador for Polar Bears International 

since 2010 and was recognized for its efforts in polar bear 

conservation. In addition to receiving the award, the Zoo 

had the honor of presenting a Paw of Approval award to 

a local business leader in energy conservation. We were 

pleased to present our first Paw of Approval award to 

Cummins, Inc. in April 2011 for their outstanding leadership 

in the area of environmental stewardship. 

cliZen 

Funded by the National Science Foundation, CLiZEN 

stands for the Climate Literacy Zoo Education Network. 

It consists of a group of zoos from across the country 

(including ours), Polar Bears International, and many 

different types of researchers. The goal of the first 

phase of the project completed in 2011 was to understand 

people’s attitudes about climate change so we, as zoos, 

can better understand how to address the issue with 

visitors, and hopefully, in the future, develop programs and 

exhibits that help encourage a change in their behaviors. 

educatIonal pRoGRaMs 

Nearly 80,000 young minds were turned toward future 

conservation issues through a variety of educational 

programs, including more than 73,000 students who 

made a field trip to the Zoo in 2011. More than 5,600 

other participants enjoyed the Dolphin In-Water 

Adventure, Zoo Camps, Overnights, Distance Learning, 

Adventure Tours, and Animal Art programs.

eye oF tHe tIGeR 

There’s nothing like staring an Amur tiger in the eye from 

an inch away to concentrate the mind. With the opening 

of Tiger Forest presented by Citizens Energy Group, 

more Zoo visitors experienced the beauty, grace, power, 

strength, exotic looks, predatory nature, and sheer magic 

of this magnificent animal. Among the iconic wild animals 

that epitomize the threat of extinction, the endangered 

Amur tiger stands as a powerful symbol of a future that 

could be empty of some of the natural world’s most 

significant animals. 

Almost all wild Amur tigers live the Southeast corner 

of Russia in the Sikhote–Alin mountain range east of 

the Amur River. They are the largest of the five remaining 

tiger species. Considered a critically endangered species, 

the tigers’ primary threats to its survival in the wild are 

poaching and habitat loss from intensive logging and 

development. Once numbered in the thousands, there 

are perhaps only 350–450 Amur tigers left in the wild 

and about an equal number in human care, including 

three at our zoo. 

The Tiger Forest exhibit features a wooded landscape 

with fallen trees, a meandering stream, and, most 

importantly, a window into the lair of the tigers 

themselves. The expansive glass, only an inch and a half 

thick, allows tigers and humans to encounter each other 

up close and personal, and while the tigers show a great 

deal of interest in the humans, the humans are absolutely 

fascinated by the experience of being so engaged with 

these stunning big cats. 

A daily tiger chat brings the cats even closer and gives 

keepers an opportunity to deliver a message about tiger 

conservation. Exhibit signs tell the story of wild tigers 

and the vital research being done by Dr. Linda Kerley and 

Misha Borisenko, as they track tigers deep inside their 

last refuge on Earth, the towering forests of eastern 

Russia–– research that is supported by funds from the 

Indianapolis Zoo and that will help secure the future for 

the magnificent Amur tiger.

MakInG a dIFFeRence 

The Indianapolis Zoo’s volunteer program continues to 

provide critical support for staff and visitors, and in 2011, 

the total number of hours given to the Zoo was equivalent 

to having 27.7 more employees! Our volunteers make a 

real difference in the quality of care we are able to offer 

our living collections and our valued visitors. 

More than 800 individuals between the ages of 14 and 

89 volunteered in 2011. Some of these individuals were 

employees of BMO Harris Bank, Macy’s, UPS, and Prologis 

and student groups from the University of Indianapolis, 

IUPUI, Butler University, and Pike High School. Nearly 25 

percent of the individuals volunteered for a special event, 

such as Zoobilation, Halloween ZooBoo, or Christmas 

at the Zoo. 

Teens gained skills transferrable to future employment, 

college interns received on-the-job training to enhance 

their resumes, and adults shared their skills with both 

staff and guests and learned new ones. Zoo volunteers 

continue to go above and beyond expectations to help 

further our mission and share our conservation messages. 

Volunteers worked an astonishing total of 57,813 hours 

in 2011, and the average Zoo volunteer worked 70.9 hours, 

which is well above the state average of 36.9 hours served 

per individual per year at multiple locations. The City 

of Indianapolis and Central Indiana continue to have a 

strong group of dedicated individuals willing to serve, 

and we are thrilled that they choose to donate their 

time and talents to us.

savInG tHe FutuRe 

FoR oRanGutans 

He was staring at the audience from the 

gigantic screen ––60 feet high and 84 feet 

wide––at the IMAX Theater in White River 

State Park. An orangutan named Azy, an animal 

whose eyes and face are easily read by anyone. 

Whatever his look is trying to communicate, 

Azy made a huge impact on the people taking 

in the big announcement. On December 6, 2011, 

hundreds of special friends of the Zoo joined 

our staff for this special moment, a time of 

monumental importance in every respect. The 

location was intentional. We needed a large 

screen to present a big vision of the future. 

We announced the Campaign for Conservation 

and Community, which includes several 

major developments at the Zoo but has as 

its centerpiece the International Orangutan 

Center, scheduled to open in 2014. Everything 

about this exhibit, the most dramatic new 

addition to the Zoo in its history and already 

described as the best zoo exhibit in the world, 

speaks to our conservation mission. 

Designed in consultation with Zoo staff 

and experts, the orangutan habitat will be 

a dynamic, interactive exhibit that allows 

these fascinating and endangered primates 

to engage in their natural behaviors, while 

challenging their curiosity and creativity. It 

will accommodate the orangutans’ arboreal 

lifestyle, stimulate and engage their remarkable 

intelligence, and support their unique social 

structure. It will also create a visitor experience 

like no other. Zoo guests will enjoy diverse 

viewing opportunities, ranging from intimate 

encounters at ground level to spectacular 

aerial rides above. Finally, a soaring tower- 

like structure will draw people into the 

Indianapolis Zoo, while enhancing the 

downtown skyline. With its unique 

design, it will become an icon for 

the Zoo, and a beacon of hope for 

the city and for wild orangutans.

tHe IndIanapolIs pRIZe: 

savInG tHe FutuRe 

While the Indianapolis Prize honors the past, it is all about 

the future, the future that the heroes of conservation 

are creating for our children and grandchildren. The 

natural world of the future will have in it elephants, tigers, 

orangutans, whooping cranes, African lions, and many 

more animal species, thanks in large part to the dedication 

represented by the nominees and winners of the Prize. 

In 2010, the third biennial Indianapolis Prize, the $100,000 

and the Lilly Medal that go with it, were awarded to Iain 

Douglas-Hamilton, the founder and president of Save 

the Elephants, an organization that works to save 

African elephants in the wild, and the world’s premier 

elephant researcher. 

In 2011, the Indianapolis Prize entered its fourth cycle, 

with the next Prize winner to be selected in 2012. During 

the interim year, nominees for the Indianapolis Prize were 

solicited from among the members of the world’s animal 

conservation community and plans are made to once 

again place the mission of saving wildlife and wild places 

for the future in the forefront of scientific news. 

Conservation experts from around the world will 

select the six finalists from among these outstanding 

conservationists, and the recipient of the Indianapolis 

Prize will be honored at the Indianapolis Prize Gala 

presented by Cummins Inc. on September 29, 2012 at 

the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. 

Multiple outreach programs support the Prize, including 

a webcast in association with Ball State University, a 

television special with WISH-TV, and a local and national 

lecture series in the week following the Gala. On-grounds 

educational programming runs through the year, including 

an opportunity for Zoo visitors to meet and speak with 

the finalists in attendance on the day of the Gala.
