[Velkommen til <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>2006</strong>]<br />

Mellem 700 og 800 bands har ønsket at få spilletid på årets <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>. Nogle friske<br />

fra øvelokalet, andre mere rutinerede og enkelte næsten etablerede. Fælles for alle er ønsket<br />

om at udvikle egne muligheder, derfra hvor man hver især befinder sig i karrieren.<br />

Lige så mange branche- og kulturfolk fra fjern og nær vil være tilstede på festivalen.<br />

Nogle nystartede inden for deres felt, andre mere rutinerede og mange fra etablerede<br />

musikvirksomheder, musikorganisationer, festivaler og medier.<br />

<strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>en har gennem årene udviklet sig til at være et internationalt anerkendt<br />

og betydende møde- og findested. Af flere internationale branchefolk fremhævet for<br />

sit høje ”musikalske bundniveau”, og af endnu flere rost for den gode atmosfære<br />

og seriøse afvikling.<br />

Det er ikke en selvfølge, at et lille land som Danmark kan være med på internationalt niveau.<br />

Det kræver en målbevidst indsats af mange. Det fordrer udholdenhed, og det kræver vilje i mange<br />

led – til nødvendige beslutninger og kompromisser, hvis potentialet skal udnyttes effektivt.<br />

I ROSA – Dansk Rock Samråd er vi stolte af, at <strong>SPOT</strong> hviler på et bredt samarbejde mellem<br />

frivillige musikelskere, fremsynede danske og internationale branchefolk og et stort udsnit<br />

af landets dygtige og entusiastiske kulturformidlere. Bredden i samarbejdet og bredden i<br />

musikken er kimen i <strong>SPOT</strong>.<br />

Vi håber igen i år, at et stort publikum vil tage imod programmet med nysgerrighed og<br />

gøre deres til, at orkestrene spiller over evne – netop på <strong>SPOT</strong>s mange scener. Og vi byder<br />

her velkommen til Svalegangen som ny koncertpartner.<br />

Som noget nyt har vi valgt at gøre torsdagen til en mere integreret del af <strong>SPOT</strong> ved at<br />

afvikle koncerter i både Ridehuset og på Officerspladsen udover indledningen i Musikhuset.<br />

[Welcome to the <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>2006</strong>]<br />

Between 700 and 800 bands applied for this year's festival. Some are fresh out of<br />

rehearsals, others more experienced, and a few are nearly established. They all share a<br />

desire to advance the opportunities of their respective career stages.<br />

A similar number of music industry representatives and cultural figures from near an far will<br />

be present at the festival. Some are new in their field, others have more experience, and quite<br />

a few represent established music companies, music organizations, festivals, and media.<br />

Over the years, the <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> has evolved to become a significant, internationally<br />

acknowledged meeting point. Several industry reps have emphasized its high 'musical<br />

bottom level', and even more have praised the great atmosphere and professional handling.<br />

It is not a foregone conclusion that a small country like Denmark can stay in the race on an<br />

international level. It takes a determined effort by a lot of people. It calls for perseverance<br />

and takes the will to make descisions and compromise if the potential is to be effeciently<br />

turned to one's advantage.<br />

At ROSA – the Danish Rock Council we are proud that <strong>SPOT</strong> is supported by a broad<br />

cooperation between volunteer music lovers, far-sighted Danish and international industry<br />

reps, and a large section of the most competent and enthusiastic promoters of culture.<br />

The scope of the cooperation and the range of the music constitute the rudiment of <strong>SPOT</strong>.<br />

We hope that a large audience will once again welcome the programme with enthusiasm<br />

and take part in supporting and animating the bands to deliver their utmost performances<br />

– at the many <strong>SPOT</strong> stages. We also welcome Svalegangen as a new concert partner.<br />

This year, we have chosen to make the Thursday an even bigger part of <strong>SPOT</strong> by having<br />

concerts in Ridehuset and Officerspladsen in addition to the opening in Musikhuset.<br />

The <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong><br />

[Kulturpolitisk fodslag og håndklap til nordisk rock<br />

og popmusik i international fremgang og udvikling]<br />

<strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>en fokuserer på ny nordisk pop- og rockmusik, som netop i disse år<br />

er genstand for en stigende international interesse. I den anledning har <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>en<br />

bedt kulturministrene fra Norge, Sverige og Danmark besvare to spørgsmål omkring nordisk<br />

rock- og popmusik:<br />

Hvorfor er det vigtigt med kendskab til nordisk musik i udlandet<br />

(uden for de nordiske grænser)? /<br />

Why is international attention important to Nordic music?<br />

[A] Musikk fra de nordiske landene blir lagt merke til internasjonalt. Kvalitet og<br />

profesjonalitet blant nordiske musikere har bidratt til mange internasjonale<br />

suksesser. Disse skaper positive ringvirkninger for nordisk musikkliv. Dette<br />

gjør at det blir mer oppmerksomhet om musikk og bidrar til at flere satser.<br />

I en næringspolitisk sammenheng er det også viktig at nordisk musikk<br />

markerer seg internasjonalt. Dette vil kunne bidra til økt eksport og skape<br />

arbeidsplasser som både gir kulturpolitiske og økonomiske resultater.<br />

Music from the Nordic countries is gaining recognition abroad. Quality<br />

and professionalism among Nordic artists have contributed to quite a few<br />

international success stories. They have a positive ripple effect on Nordic<br />

music life. It brings about more attention on music and contributes to more<br />

people taking the chance. From a politico-commercial perspective, it is important<br />

that Nordic music leaves its mark internationally. It will contribute to<br />

increased exports and to the creation of jobs, which will have effects on cultural<br />

politics and economy alike.<br />

[A] Jag har länge arbetat för att få ut nordisk musik i världen – varför ska man bara<br />

satsa på att marknadsföra och exportera skruvar, muttrar och pappersmassa, men<br />

inte Cardigans, Timbuktu och the Hives? Ska våra nordiska länder bli framgångsrika<br />

utomlands, i allt hårdare konkurrens, måste vi utveckla smarta strategier och i<br />

genomtänkt samverkan visa upp det vi är bra på. Och vi har fantastiskt mycket<br />

begåvning på musiksidan här! Vi kan faktiskt stoltsera med några av världens<br />

starkaste upphovsmän, vad det gäller både kompositörer, artister, producenter och<br />

videoregissörer.<br />

For quite a while, I have been working hard to bring Nordic music out into the world.In<br />

terms of marketing and export, why focus exclusively on screws, nuts, and paper<br />

pulp, and not on The Cardigans, Timbuktu, and The Hives? If our Nordic countries are<br />

to succeed on an international level in tough competition, we have to develop<br />

thought-through strategies and show our strengths by means of tight cooperation.<br />

And actually our countries abound with musical talent! We can be proud of having<br />

some of the most skilled songwriters, artists, producers, and video directors.<br />

[A] Det er ikke så meget et spørgsmål om, hvad Norden kan tilbyde udlandet.<br />

De nordiske kunstnere har nemlig brug for den internationale musikscene til<br />

at udvikle sig på. Mødet med et kræsent internationalt publikum er i høj grad<br />

med til at udvikle den enkelte kunstner. Nordisk musik skal derfor være<br />

synlig i udlandet for at skabe rum og plads for kunstnerne. Nye musikalske<br />

udtryksformer opstår altid i en musikalsk vekselvirkning, og her skal nordisk<br />

musik både bidrage og modtage. Det bliver både den nordiske og internationale<br />

musik bedre af.<br />

It is not so much a question of what the Nordic countries have to offer abroad.<br />

Rather, the Nordic artists need the international music scene to evolve. Their<br />

exposure to a choosy audience contributes significantly to the individual<br />

artist’s development. Therefore, Nordic music must be visible abroad to<br />

create room for the artists. New musical forms of expression always develop<br />

through interaction, and Nordic music should both give and get. Nordic and<br />

international music alike will benefit from that.<br />

[Joint Cultural Policy to Further Rapid International<br />

Progress of Nordic Rock and Pop Music]<br />

The <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> focuses on new Nordic pop and rock music, which attracts more and more<br />

international attention these years. In that connection The <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> has asked the ministers<br />

of cultural affairs from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark two questions concerning Nordic rock and<br />

pop music. Here are their answers.<br />

Hvorfor er det vigtigt med kendskab til nordisk musik i Norden? /<br />

Why is the mutual awareness of Nordic music<br />

important within the Nordic countries?<br />

[B] Nordisk musikk blir internasjonalt ofte oppfattet å ha en ”unik sound”. Musikere<br />

fra de nordiske landene blir oftere kategorisert som nordiske enn som svenske,<br />

danske osv. Det nordiske kulturelle fellesskapet er derfor godt synlig internasjonalt,<br />

men kan utnyttes bedre de nordiske landene imellom. Det er en utfordring å nå fram<br />

på de store internasjonale markedene for artister fra små land, med små plateselskaper<br />

og små budsjetter. Ved å samarbeide og utnytte det nordiske nettverket og det<br />

nordiske hjemmemarkedet, vil en kunne oppnå større volum og viktige synergieffekter.<br />

Nordisk musikksamarbeid fører til at nordiske artister blir bedre kjent i hele<br />

Norden. <strong>SPOT</strong> festivalen er et viktig tiltak for å bidra til det.<br />

On the international front, Nordic music is thought of as having a unique sound.<br />

Musicians from the Nordic countries are more often categorized as being Nordic than<br />

as being Swedish, Danish, etc. Therefore, the Nordic cultural community is very<br />

salient internationally, which, however, we can benefit even more from. It is a<br />

challenge to get into the international markets for artists from small countries, with<br />

small record companies, and small budgets. By collaborating and utilizing the Nordic<br />

network and the Nordic home market, you will be able to achieve a greater volume<br />

in terms of growth, production, and significant synergy effects. Nordic music<br />

collaboration leads to Nordic artists gaining recognition in all the Nordic countries.<br />

The <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> is an important means in that process.<br />

[B] All kultur av betydelse har en internationell dimension. Att låta sig influeras,<br />

påverkas och inspireras av varandra, kan vara ett sätt att stärka, och utveckla<br />

det nordiska musiklivet ytterligare. Jag ser internationaliseringen som en<br />

utvecklingsstrategi för dessa områden som vi idag inte har råd att vara utan.<br />

Jag vill att det nordiska kulturlivet ska andas i takt med världen. Och jag vill<br />

betona ömsesidigheten: det är precis lika viktigt att vi är öppna för intryck som<br />

att vi själva kommer ut och visar upp oss.<br />

All significant culture has an international dimension. To be influenced, affected,<br />

and inspired by one another can be one way of reinforcing and developing<br />

Nordic music to a higher level. I think of internationalisation as a developmental<br />

strategy for this area, which we cannot be without today. I want Nordic<br />

cultural life to breathe at pace with the rest of the world. And I would like to<br />

stress: it is just as important that we are open to impression, as it is that we<br />

present our talents abroad.<br />

[B] I Norden er vi kulturelt og sprogligt forbundet. Det mener jeg er oplagt at<br />

bruge i udviklingen af vore musikere. Her har vi faktisk et udvidet hjemmemarked,<br />

der kan holde karrieren i gang for en nordisk sproget kunstner eller<br />

være det oplagte springbræt for en international karriere. Hvis musikken skal<br />

have et nordisk brand, er det åbenlyst, at samarbejdet og inspirationen<br />

mellem de nordiske skal fremmes. Det er egenarten, der gør forskellen på det<br />

globale musikmarked, og her har Norden vitterlig noget at byde på.<br />

In the Nordic countries, we are related in terms of culture and language. In my<br />

eyes, this fact offers opportunities for the development of our musicians,<br />

which it would be a great shame to miss. Here we actually have an expanded<br />

home market, which can assist in keeping the career going for the<br />

Nordic artists, or it can be the ideal springboard to an international career.<br />

Obviously if the music is to have a Nordic brand, it is necessary to advance<br />

the co-operation and inspiration between the Nordic countries. ‘Specific<br />

character’ is what makes the difference on the global music market, and that<br />

is definitely something Nordic music has to offer.<br />

Canadian Elliot Brood play uncanny folk, piercing<br />

bluegrass, and gloomy roots – a style they call Death<br />

Country. The sombre ballads of popular legends, love<br />

and murder are told by a soaked voice, and the<br />

atmosphere is enhanced by banjo, lap steel and antiquarian<br />

organs. In their native country they have been<br />

labelled “Canada's Breakout Band of <strong>2006</strong>".<br />

Europe – the latest also in Northern America – extensive<br />

touring and praise virtually raining down on the<br />

Figurines’ wry American-inspired indie rock.<br />

Without using laptops or programmed backtracks,<br />

Holy Fuck plays electronic music with a jumble<br />

of old toy keyboards, effects pedals, pulsating bass,<br />

drums, and even the sound of movie editing<br />

equipment. The band’s music is improvised, which<br />

makes live performances and recordings an<br />

unpredictable, lively, and very intense experience.<br />

Et par begejstrede teenagere gjorde ROSA opmærksom på Lis Er Stille. Gruppens formåen blev dernæst tjekket af,<br />

speciel lyssætning til at understøtte den billedskabende musik. Et sats, men: – Jeg véd de kan bære det. Og det<br />

A couple of excited teenagers made ROSA aware of Lis Er Stille. Then ROSA checked out the band during rehearsals,<br />

and hence, got the idea to present the music of Lis Er Stille as the festival's opening concert – in surroundings, which,<br />

through perfect sound and unique lighting, can enrich the picturesque music of the band. A daring chance, but:<br />

“I'm sure they will succeed. And it is necessary for us to keep experimenting with the form and content, and to take<br />

chances when it comes to music. Otherwise we won't evolve”, says Gunnar Madsen, managing director of ROSA.<br />

material, but in new versions performed together with a classical ensemble from the country where the festival is held. In<br />

By now Spanish The Sunday Drivers have many<br />

years, several festival gigs, and a European release<br />

under their belt. The quintet, who are often compared<br />

to bands like Blur and Oasis, find a lot of their musical<br />

major asset in their charismatic singer Jero Romero’s<br />

deep and powerful voice.<br />

From early on in their career, the Belgian rock band<br />

Venus have been compared to Radiohead. Their latest<br />

album, which is their fourth release, does indeed<br />

contain a similar blend of gentle melodies, sheer<br />

musical power, intensity and introvert lyrics. The<br />

quartet – vocal and guitar, bass, drums, and violin – are<br />

known for their theatrical performance.<br />

review in Rolling Stone Magazine.<br />

the trio Alpha presents new minimalist compositions,<br />

Det danske hardcore metalband As We Fight har<br />

opbygget sit ry som et fremragende liveorkester på<br />

den gode gammeldags måde: Hårdt arbejde og<br />

masser af koncerter. Bandets debutalbum fra april<br />

2004 blev fulgt op af en 18 måneders turné med en<br />

lang række jobs i hele Europa og senere prisen som<br />

”Årets Live Band” ved Danish Metal Awards 2005.<br />

The Danish hardcore metal band As We Fight has<br />

built up its reputation as a terrific live act in the oldfashioned<br />

way: Hard work and loads of concerts. The<br />

band's album debut from April 2004 was followed up<br />

by an 18-month tour with a long line of gigs all over<br />

Europe, and later on, the award for “Live Band of the<br />

Year” at the Danish Metal Awards 2005.<br />

Baby Woodrose er svedig rock uden slinger i valsen.<br />

Det seneste album byder igen på uforfalsket, beskidt<br />

guitarrock fra trioen, der i 2003 tog Danmark med<br />

albummet ”Money For Soul”. Samme år blev bandet<br />

belønnet med P3 Guld-prisen. På scenen er frontmand<br />

Baby Woodrose is steadfast Danish rock. The latest<br />

album presents unadulterated, pure rock from the trio<br />

that took Denmark by storm in 2003 with the hit<br />

“Money For Soul”. That year, the band got the P3 Guld<br />

award. On stage, front man Lorenzo Woodrose & Co.<br />

Norske BigBang spiller rock – nostalgisk og elektrisk<br />

Norwegian BigBang is rock – nostalgic and electric<br />

retro rock. Similar to 60's and 70's rock'n'roll,<br />

Danish/British/Japanese Blue Foundation are now<br />

endeavouring outside Denmark with their hazy dub,<br />

dusty beats, and entrancing melodies. Coinciding with<br />

a mini-tour, the new EP was released across<br />

the Nordic countries with both new tracks and<br />

re-recordings. According to the band, the EP closes<br />

the “Sweep of Days” chapter. The 2004 CD struck<br />

Broken Beats. Omdrejningspunktet for den 8-mand<br />

store besætning er sangskriver Kim Munks finurlige<br />

og unikke virvar af stilarter og rytmer. Trods de<br />

århusianske rødder er bandets hjemmebane efterhånden<br />

blevet Tyskland og Benelux, hvor de har<br />

spillet utallige koncerter og har kontrakt med<br />

tyske Hazelwood.<br />

It is fair to call The Broken Beats a musical melting<br />

pot. The focal point of the eight-strong crew is<br />

songwriter Kim Munk's subtle and unique jumble of<br />

styles and rhythms. Despite their roots in Aarhus, the<br />

band's home turf has gradually become Germany and<br />

Benelux where they have played countless concerts<br />

and have a contract with German Hazelwood.<br />

Da fire af I Got You On Tapes fem medlemmer har<br />

rødder i jazzen, lå det ikke ligefrem i kortene, at de<br />

skulle bevæge sig ud af indierockens spor – ikke<br />

Auditorium. Stilmæssigt er de en krydsning af<br />

Interpols art-rock og det støvede hypnotiske lydspor<br />

Considering their roots in jazz, it wasn't quite in the<br />

cards that the five members of I Got You On Tape<br />

would take the indie rock road – even so, in January<br />

Auditorium. The style is a hybrid of Interpol's art rock<br />

and the dusty, hypnotic sound track of an American<br />

road movie: Dreamy tempo and beautiful monotony.<br />

Nordstrøm er en helt ny dansk electropop-duo, der<br />

skriver skarpe, slidstærke og iørefaldende popsange<br />

– og synger på dansk. Sangene er udadvendte og<br />

tekst. Ambitionen er at udvide grænserne for, hvordan<br />

In <strong>2006</strong>, Pato released his album debut on Danish<br />

rapper Jokeren’s new label Flamingo Records. His<br />

tasty cocktail of hip hop, reggae, rock, and ska.<br />

publikum. Grundsubstansen i kvintettens musik er<br />

forbinder med en vinder af Statens Kunstfonds<br />

konkurrence for unge komponister. Beskrivelsen passer<br />

imidlertid på Karsten Pflum, hvis hurtige komplekse<br />

beats iblandet digital skrat og computerspilslyd bl.a.<br />

har imponeret BBC's nu afdøde dj-legende John Peel.<br />

Hyperactive, rhythmic electronica with crazy, sharp<br />

beats might not be what most people associate with<br />

a winner of The Danish Arts Foundation's competition<br />

for young composers. It does, however, describe<br />

Karsten Pflum whose quick, complex beats<br />

with digital rattle and computer game sounds<br />

impressed BBC's now deceased DJ legend John Peel<br />

it comes to Pluto, which is headed by singer, songwriter,<br />

James Brown? A rock concept rooted in rockabilly, but<br />

with as many offshoots as songs. With two guitars<br />

guitarspil under en fest blev startskuddet til Surfact<br />

guitarrock. Bandet, der har skrevet over 30 sange og<br />

optrådt i Frankrig, Spanien og USA, står endnu uden<br />

Three guys’ chance meeting at a party and subsequent<br />

acoustic jam was the birth of Surfact. Two more guys<br />

have joined, the guitars have been electrified, and<br />

they now play hard yet appealing guitar rock. Having<br />

France, Spain and the US, they have yet to sign with a<br />

record company, but two EPs are on their way.<br />

Den færøske trio 200 byder på hurtig rock i den<br />

punkede afdeling med overraskende breaks og beats<br />

til satiriske tekster om bl.a. uafhængighed fra<br />

Danmark og homofobi – sunget på færøsk med Elvisvokal!<br />

Trioen fandt sammen i 1996 for at vise, man<br />

kan synge rock på færøsk, hvilket kun få gjorde<br />

dengang – siden er det blevet til to anmelderroste<br />

albums.<br />

The Faroese trio 200 is fast rock with a punk twist,<br />

surprising breaks and beats and satirical lyrics about<br />

independence from Denmark and homophobia<br />

– sung in Faroese with Elvis vocals! The trio got<br />

together in 1996 to prove that it is possible to sing<br />

in Faroese – not a common thing at that time.<br />

Since then, they have made two critically<br />

acclaimed albums.<br />

smukke, nordiske middelalderballader med<br />

Drawing on the band Vírelai, Danish/Faroese Valravn<br />

mixes old yet electrically amplified instruments like<br />

samples. The result is both beautiful, Nordic medieval<br />

ballads with Anna Katrin Egilstrød's vocals as the focal<br />

point and gripping instrumental dance music.<br />

blanding af rock og sprød britisk indiepop med<br />

Since their album debut in 2004, Yellowish, with the<br />

vocals of Aage Hedensted and Laura Noszcyk, have<br />

toured Denmark and Germany extensively. The<br />

follow-up from spring <strong>2006</strong> is a dreamy mixture of<br />

rock and crisp British indie pop with hints of the late<br />

80's shoegazer scene – produced by Carsten Heller<br />

Since 1999, the <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> has blown wind to the sails of the art of songwriting and the singer/songwriter<br />

genre, tastefully spiced up by elements of hip hop and r&b,<br />

and driven by charismatic vocals and poetic lyrics.<br />

To danske og to norske sangskrivere og -solister optræder med norske Real Ones som backinggruppe, når DR, NRK<br />

og ROSA for anden gang kan præsentere det dansk/norske radioprojekt ”Sangskrivning i rødt, hvidt – og blåt” på <strong>SPOT</strong><br />

<strong>Festival</strong>en. Camille Jones og Rasmus Nøhr er de danske solister, mens Norge er repræsenteret af Marthe Valle og<br />

Thom Hell. <strong>SPOT</strong>-koncerten er led i en turné, der har til formål at præsentere nye musikalske talenter i broderlandene,<br />

både for hinanden og publikum. Koncertrækken starter 1. juni i Aalborg, 2.juni gælder det <strong>SPOT</strong> og 3. juni København,<br />

hvorefter turnéen fortsætter i Norge – DR og NRK sender live-optagelser fra koncerterne i radioen.<br />

[Songwriting in red, white – and blue]<br />

Two Danish and two Norwegian songwriters and solo artists will perform with Norwegian Real Ones as backing when<br />

DR (The Danish Broadcasting Corporation) NRK (The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation), and ROSA present the<br />

Danish/Norwegian radio project “Songwriting in red, white – and blue” for the second time in <strong>SPOT</strong> history. Camille<br />

Jones and Rasmus Nøhr are the Danish artists whereas Marthe Valle and Thom Hell will represent Norway. The <strong>SPOT</strong><br />

concert is part of a tour, the purpose of which is to introduce new musical talents in our neighbouring countries, both<br />

to each other and to the audience. The line of concerts will begin in Aalborg on June 1, and the <strong>SPOT</strong> concert is<br />

on June 2, followed by Copenhagen on June 3, after which the tour will continue in Norway – DR and NRK will air<br />

recordings from the concerts on the radio.<br />

Den københavnske troubadour imponerer igen med<br />

sine dansksprogede hverdagsfortællinger, der indeholder<br />

store doser inderlighed, selvrefleksion<br />

og humor. Anmelderdarlingen Rasmus Nøhr, der<br />

spiller ”vise-pop” med elementer fra jazz, folk, swing<br />

og blues, er ofte blevet sammenlignet med store<br />

danske sangskrivere som Søren Kragh-Jakobsen<br />

og Kim Larsen.<br />

Once again the Copenhagen troubadour impresses<br />

everyone with his honest Danish-language tales of<br />

everyday life, which contain plenty of reflection and<br />

humour. The critically acclaimed Rasmus Nøhr,<br />

who plays pop ditties with elements of jazz, folk,<br />

swing, and blues, is often compared to Danish<br />

songwriter giants such as Kim Larsen and Søren<br />

Real Ones er et rock-band af den gamle skole.<br />

De fem drenge har spillet sammen siden deres pure<br />

ungdom og brillerer med en vidunderligt varieret<br />

rockmusik, der har store referencer til 60’er-rock og<br />

folk. Bandet, der er en af de senere års helt store<br />

norske anmelderdarlings og har ry som et fantastisk<br />

liveband, optræder som backingband for årets<br />

dansk/norske radioprojekt.<br />

Real Ones are an old-school rock band. The five<br />

guys have played together since their youth, and excel<br />

in a marvellously multi-facetted rock with clear<br />

references to 60s rock and folk. The Norwegian<br />

critics’ favourites of the last couple of years, and<br />

rumoured to be an amazing live act, the band<br />

feature as the backing band of this year’s<br />

Danish-Norwegian radio project.<br />

In line with distinctly advancing release possibilities, the work of critics has faced increasing challenge<br />

in recent years. New media make use of track review, while the common review is on the retreat.<br />

To what extent has the review evolved and what will be the relevance of an album review in a mere<br />

5 years? This issue and a more fundamental address on reviews will be discussed by three leading<br />

figures from the Danish and American music press.<br />

and foreign music scene. He recently released the book “Beat City”, which portrays and orchestrates<br />

musicians and their unique culture. With a point of departure in his photos, Søren Solkær Starbird is<br />

joined by chief of culture and museum director of the Royal Library, Ingrid Fischer Jonge, and music<br />

entrepreneur Poul Martin Bonde for a conversation on rock mythology and its classical settings.<br />

Søren Solkær Starbird began photographing on an 18<br />

month trip around Asia and Australia from 1989 to 1990,<br />

and, in the mid-nineties, he studied photography at the<br />

Photo and Film Academy in Prague. For the past ten years,<br />

his main objects have been musicians and cultural figures,<br />

which last year resulted in the release of the book ”Beat<br />

City” featuring rock portraits of Danish and international<br />

stars such as Beck, Junior Senior, Raveonettes, Franz<br />

Ferdinand, Nephew, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.<br />

Ingrid Fischer Jonge is an M.A. in art history, and since<br />

The Royal Library. She built up the National Museum of<br />

Photography in Den Sorte Diamant, and she has arranged<br />

numerous exhibitions on photography. Moreover, she has<br />

written a number of articles and the book ‘Fotografi i<br />

Diamanten’, which was released in 2004.<br />

Norwegian author Erik Fosnes Hansen made his novel<br />

debut at the age of 20 with the ’The Falcon Tower’ (1985)<br />

which was well received by readers and critics alike.<br />

However, he is most famous for its follow-up ‘Psalm<br />

at Journey’s End’ (1990) that takes place aboard the<br />

Titanic and ‘Tales of Protection’ (1998). His books have<br />

reaped a host of awards and have been translated into<br />

more than 20 languages.<br />

of the protest song is written in blood, sweat, and exhaust fumes across the Danish and American landscapes.<br />

However, can it still inspire progressive minds to move the political structures that affect social change or have greedy<br />

media conglomerates dictating the taste silenced these voices of dissent? Poet-moderator Neill C. Furio and three Danish<br />

voices will debate the storied past, sorry present, and uncertain future of the protest song.<br />

Tobias Trier is a singer, musician, and composer. He has<br />

made four solo albums. The most recent one 'Grønne<br />

Hjerter' is also the soundtrack for the movie of the same<br />

title. He has composed music for a mobile symphony and<br />

for theatre, radio and TV.With his verbatim Danish lyrics, he<br />

is a worthy candidate as the folk singer of a new generation.<br />

incited by the re-politicization of society in recent years,<br />

he took the initiative for the recently released<br />

Protestsange.dk, on which 13 young artists interpret<br />

Danish protest songs from between 1952 and 1990.<br />

Photographer Søren Solkær Starbird is part of the <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> seminar programme (see presentation<br />

on page 36), but at the same time he is exhibiting his works. In 2005, he released the book<br />

‘Beat City’ featuring photos of big Danish and international musicians. From May 13 to June 4,<br />

these photos will be on display in Århus Kunstbygning – an exhibition that will close with the<br />

festival where the pictures will form the setting for the two days of music in Århus Kunstbygning.<br />

TDC Pick-Up: Award-winning music downloads with a<br />

focus on album releases from great Danish talents.<br />

On the lookout for new faces on the Danish music scene? Pick-Up is for<br />

you! Here you can find a long list of the coolest Danish releases, you can<br />

read about their background, watch their music videos, and naturally you<br />

can also buy their music as downloads. Lately, Pick-Up has featured bands<br />

like Lis Er Stille, Under Byen, Track 72, and Figurines – names that will all<br />

perform at the <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> – and every day new acts are added.<br />

This focus on Danish talent was one of the reasons why TDC Music received<br />

the e-trade award <strong>2006</strong>. The music is selected and presented to the<br />

download store TDC Music by ROSA – The Danish Rock Council.<br />

[ROSA – Dansk Rock Samråd]<br />

ROSA – Dansk Rock Samråd har siden 1981 eksisteret som selvejende<br />

institution, og har – via økonomisk støtte, praktisk og faglig rådgivning<br />

– som formål at fremme mulighederne for dansk rockmusik og at støtte<br />

udviklingen og fornyelsen af rockmusikkens vækstlag.<br />

Med særligt fokus på live-scenen i udlandet støtter ROSA årligt op mod 300<br />

koncerter, showcases og andre kunstneriske fremstød med seriøs dansk pop- og<br />

rockmusik. ROSAs koncertstøtte omfatter både turneer, enkeltkoncerter, messeog<br />

festival-præsentationer og samarbejde med konsulater og ambassader.<br />

• Planlægning og gennemførelse af den årlige <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong><br />

[ROSA – The Danish Rock Council]<br />

ROSA – The Danish Rock Council has existed as a self-governing institution since<br />

1981. The objectives of the institution are to improve the conditions for Danish<br />

rock music and to support the development and the renewal of the growth layer<br />

of the Danish rock scene.<br />

With a particular focus on the live-scene abroad, ROSA annually supports more<br />

than 150 concerts, showcases, and artistic campaigns with serious Danish<br />

pop and rock music. ROSA’s concert support extends to tours, single concerts,<br />

appearances at trade shows and festivals, and collaborations with consulates<br />

and embassies.<br />

A small selection of ROSA’s activities:<br />

• Planning and running the annual <strong>SPOT</strong> <strong>Festival</strong><br />

• Co-initiator of and secretariat of the export collaboration<br />

MXD – Music Export Denmark<br />

• Primus motor of the Skand-All initiative, which sends<br />

bands to Germany to create a bridgehead for Danish<br />

music on the German market<br />

[World Music Denmark]<br />

Den 1. januar <strong>2006</strong> blev Foreningen for<br />

Verdensmusik i Danmark afløst af den nye<br />

genreorganisation World Music Denmark<br />

(WMD). WMD vil videreføre foreningens<br />

hidtidige støtteordninger og aktiviteter. Bl.a.<br />

honorarstøtte til spillestedsjob i Danmark, støtte<br />

til markedsføring af orkestre, aktivitetsstøtte til<br />

arrangementer og projekter, samt eksportstøtte f.eks.<br />

til transportudgifter i forbindelse med job i udlandet, international netværksopbygning<br />

og deltagelse på musikmesser.<br />

WMD arrangerer også stævner og workshops, giver støtte til banddoktor, samarbejder<br />

omkring festivals og arrangerer en årlig upcoming world festival samt prisuddelingen<br />

Danish World Awards. WMD informerer desuden om og markedsfører dansk verdensmusik,<br />

bl.a. i form af promotion-CDer, via messer og via eget katalog på organisationens hjemmeside.<br />

[World Music Denmark]<br />

On 1 January <strong>2006</strong>, the Danish World Music Association was replaced by the new genre<br />

organisation World Music Denmark (WMD). WMD is going to continue the association’s<br />

support scheme and events. For example, the fee support for venue performances in<br />

Denmark, support for promotion of bands, event support for arrangements and projects,<br />

and export support, e.g. for transport expenses in connection with jobs abroad, the development<br />

of international networks. and participation in music trade shows.<br />

WMD is also involved in organizing symposiums and workshops, it provides support for<br />

band doctor, collaborates regarding festivals, and it arranges an annual upcoming world<br />

festival along with the award show Danish World Awards. Furthermore, WMD provides<br />

information on and promotes Danish world music, e.g. through the release of promotion<br />

CDs and the catalogue on the organizations website.<br />

[SNYK - Sekretariat for Ny Kompositionsmusik]<br />

Sekretariat for Ny Kompositionsmusik er en interesseorganisation med fokus på ny<br />

dansk ”kompositionsmusik”. Det er en genre, der ofte – i mangel af bedre<br />

defineres som ’moderne klassisk musik’.<br />

SNYK har selvfølgelig udkik til en langt bredere vifte af ny og eksperimenterende musik,<br />

ofte i grænselandet mellem ’klassiske’ og ’rytmiske’ genrer, fx elektro-akustisk musik.<br />

Sekretariatets daglige opgaver består i informationsarbejde og forskellige former<br />

for projekt-initiativer, fx ”Ny Scene”, en årlig turné rundt i landet med en række<br />

ny-musik-ensembler, der er udvalgt blandt de bedste og mest interessante og<br />

nyskabende af slagsen.<br />

SNYK driver to web-sites, www.lytnyt.dk, der løbende informerer om alt, hvad<br />

der rører sig på ny-musik-scenen, og www.snyk.dk, hvor al tænkelig information<br />

om området er samlet.<br />

[SNYK - Secretariat For Contemporary Music]<br />

Secretariat for Contemporary Music/SNYK is a non-profit organization with focus on<br />

Danish contemporary music. It is a genre which is defined as “modern classical music”,<br />

for lack of a better term.<br />

However, SNYK encompasses a much wider range of new and experimental music –<br />

often in the borderland of classical and popular genres, e.g. electro-acoustic music.<br />

The daily work of the secretariat includes the communication of information and various<br />

projects, e.g. “Ny Scene” – an annual tour around the country featuring a number of the<br />

most interesting and innovative contemporary music ensembles.<br />

SNYK manages two websites, www.lytnyt.dk – an internet calendar with information<br />

on concerts all around the country – and www.snyk.dk, which abounds with<br />

information on and news from the contemporary music scene.<br />

Landets største sangskriver- og komponistforening<br />

Foreningen arbejder for at varetage medlemmernes<br />

[DJBFA – The Danish Society for Jazz, Rock and Folk Composers]<br />

Denmark's largest society of professional songwriters and composers, working in<br />

the domain of jazz, rock, folk, and related genres. Founded in 1973, the society totals<br />

915 members today. DJBFA acts to safeguard the members’ professional and financial<br />

interests with regards to publishers, record companies and politicians in Denmark and<br />

the EU. We offer legal advice as well as financial support e.g. by awarding grants and<br />

travelling scholarships as well as offering stays in our retreat-domiciles in Greece, Spain,<br />

New York, Paris, Berlin, or on the Danish islands of Bornholm and Samsø. We support<br />

and organize concerts with new Danish music. In order to further the network, the unity<br />

to music/texts within all popular genres.<br />

The Guild acts to safeguard its members’ interests regarding economics and cultural<br />

policy. This implies arranging meetings, negotiating with employers, publishing the<br />
