In September, I3r. r^obert P. Bareikis joined Mount Vernon College as Interim vice presi
dent for Academic Affairs. Dr. Bareikis is on leave from his position of assistant x'ite
president for academic Affairs at California State university. Long Beacfi.
Sinc"e graduating from Harvard with a Ph.D. in Germanic Eanguages and EittMature, Dr.
13areikis has been active contriloutor to the academic community' as an educator and
sc;holar. Before assuming his position
at California, Santa Cruz.
Dr. Bareikis has presented numerous papers and has led se\'eral \\'orkshof)s on aca
demic affairs management, academic planning, tc^aching and Cermanic studies. As a
faculty member, he taught Germanic and West European Studies at Indiana Universits
and was a visiting professor at liniversity of California, San Diego, University of Pitts
burgh, The John f-lopkins University and Harx'ard University.
An active member of California State University comiTiunity Dr. Bareikis serves on many
committees addressing such issues as resource planning, curriculum, retention and
international education. He is currently a chair on the Scholar-in-Residence Selection
committee at the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. His experience and
research in education makes him the ideal person for Mount Vernon during his tran
sitional period.
Dr, Bareikis is looking forward to this year of transition and the challenges facing the
colk^gcv He has come to Mount Vernon with a fresh and creatix'e perspective.
As the
interim vice president for academic affairs, he is working to allocate resources in a wa>'
that preserves the quality of education for students, and he will do ever>'thing possible
to attract and retain the highest quality faculty.

Mount Vernon College celebrated Convo-
caticjn, a ceremony that officially begins the
academic year, Thursday, September I3th, in
the Florence HcjIIIs t land Chapel k)cated on
the campus. David Brinklcy, a 46-year vet
eran of broadc;ast news iind a winner of to
Emmy Awards, was the fioi ic irc ( I guc;st Sr^eaker.
The event, which was an hour long, rc;cognizes
the; tof) schc )lars of each class from tfie
prevl(3us academic year. Dr. Madeleine;
Fischer Green, interiin president of Mcjurit
Vernon College, discussed the goals and ac-
complistimcjnts of the ccjllege before; introduc:ing
Mr. lirinklcy and presenting awards.
Mr. Brinkley's speech was pc)lislK;d and
l)rit;f. His anecdotes entertained tfie crowd
and his description of the current wcjrld
scene stimulated the students. Mr. Brinklcy
said that Ihe worki is now an open market of
opportunity, particularly

many naiioits have created a demand for intc;rnational

A dinner followed the ceremony in the

300 of the missions targeted

than 35,000 sorties have been
flown in the war to date.

than 500,000, supported by more than
205,000 coalition troops.
Iraq has 545,000 troops in the Kuwaiti

According to U.S. officials, 27 Iraqi
aircraft have been destroyed in
air-to-air combat, and 28 on the
ground. Thirteen U.S. warplanes and
seven coalition planes have been lost
to hostile fire since the war began;
this figure includes one Air Force
AC-130 gunship that crashed
Thursday morning during a combat
mission over Kuwait.
