In September, I3r. r^obert P. Bareikis joined Mount Vernon College as Interim vice presi<br />

dent for Academic Affairs. Dr. Bareikis is on leave from his position of assistant x'ite<br />

president for academic Affairs at California State university. Long Beacfi.<br />

Sinc"e graduating from Harvard with a Ph.D. in Germanic Eanguages and EittMature, Dr.<br />

13areikis has been active contriloutor to the academic community' as an educator and<br />

sc;holar. Before assuming his position<br />

at California, Santa Cruz.<br />

Dr. Bareikis has presented numerous papers and has led se\'eral \\'orkshof)s on aca<br />

demic affairs management, academic planning, tc^aching and Cermanic studies. As a<br />

faculty member, he taught Germanic and West European Studies at Indiana Universits<br />

and was a visiting professor at liniversity of California, San Diego, University of Pitts<br />

burgh, The John f-lopkins University and Harx'ard University.<br />

An active member of California State University comiTiunity Dr. Bareikis serves on many<br />

committees addressing such issues as resource planning, curriculum, retention and<br />

international education. He is currently a chair on the Scholar-in-Residence Selection<br />

committee at the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. His experience and<br />

research in education makes him the ideal person for Mount Vernon during his tran<br />

sitional period.<br />

Dr, Bareikis is looking forward to this year of transition and the challenges facing the<br />

colk^gcv He has come to Mount Vernon with a fresh and creatix'e perspective.<br />

As the<br />

interim vice president for academic affairs, he is working to allocate resources in a wa>'<br />

that preserves the quality of education for students, and he will do ever>'thing possible<br />

to attract and retain the highest quality faculty.<br />

academic year, Thursday, September I3th, in<br />

the campus. David Brinklcy, a 46-year vet<br />

eran of broadc;ast news iind a winner of to<br />

The event, which was an hour long, rc;cognizes<br />

the; tof) schc )lars of each class from tfie<br />

prevl(3us academic year. Dr. Madeleine;<br />

Fischer Green, interiin president of Mcjurit<br />

Vernon College, discussed the goals and ac-<br />

complistimcjnts of the ccjllege before; introduc:ing<br />

Mr. lirinklcy and presenting awards.<br />

Mr. Brinkley's speech was pc)lislK;d and<br />

and his description of the current wcjrld<br />

coalition pilots flew more than<br />

2,500 sorties yesterday. Over<br />

300 of the missions targeted<br />

positions along the<br />

Saudi-Kuwaiti border. More<br />

than 35,000 sorties have been<br />

flown in the war to date.<br />

aircraft have been destroyed in<br />

air-to-air combat, and 28 on the<br />

ground. Thirteen U.S. warplanes and<br />

seven coalition planes have been lost<br />

to hostile fire since the war began;<br />

this figure includes one Air Force<br />

AC-130 gunship that crashed<br />

Thursday morning during a combat<br />

mission over Kuwait.
