From the Editor
Welcome to the latest issue of The Villager, a
community magazine and business directory
that has been delivered free of charge to every
home in Magor, Undy, Redwick and Rogiet,
Wilcrick and Llandevenny.
This issue is the largest to date with a couple of
new sections - recipe and colouring page
competition.
Every issue I have local residents saying how
they enjoy reading The Villager and in
particular looking at the old pictures that are
published. With that in mind, a resident from
Llanwern village that collects old postcards,
was kind enough to let us have copies from her
collection, and over the next few issues we will
be including some of them, starting in this
issue. Maybe you recognise some of the places,
all of which are from the early 1900s.
Also, have a look at the ‘What’s On’ section on
page 50 to see some of the events that are
happening locally over the next couple of
months. If you have an event you would like to
include please let us know.
Earlier this year I mentioned about the
fantastic outdoor Christmas light displays that
residents did last year. If you are decorating
your home this year for the Christmas season,
Copy deadline for the November/December
edition is 25th October 2013
MEMORIES OF WORLD WAR 2
By John Ford
Magor during the second world war saw some
scary and exciting things happen which stay
in my memory today.
In 1940, a large brick air raid shelter was built
in The Square alongside where the St. David’s
Hospice shop is today. A machine gun bunker
was also dug out on the south side of the
railway bridge, which was used to look out for,
and fire on any enemy troops that came across
the moors. Occassionally we played inside
them which didn’t please the local policeman.
Air raid
wardens and
Home Guard
volunteers
were based
at the
Temperance
Hall. At
weekends, to
help with
their training,
Norman
‘Kipper’ Allen
and I would
be asked to go
and lie down
in a derelict
house or barn
and wait to be found, be treated for our
pretend wounds with bandages and then be
taken back to the hall for a well deserved cup
of tea.
The Home Guard consisted of young and old
volunteers. Lambart Bird, a local farmer from
Undy, all five feet and a bit of him was the
Sargeant, he also had a very loud voice which
helped.
For some fun, we used to march behind them
from The Square to a field on the top of
Vinegar Hill, which was their training ground.
4
There was also the
serious side of the
conflict in our villages.
We lived in Brassknocker Street, and our
house had a stone built shed. When we had the
first air raids, my mother and father would
make us go and sit, by candle light, amongst
the coal, bikes and tools in the shed until the
all clear sounded.
We also had the blackout to contend with. We
bought black material from Miss Adams
drapers shop, now Bliss hairdressers. The
material was made into curtains to stop any
light being shown at night making it difficult
for enemy planes to spot areas of housing.
Mr Vaughan, the local policeman was very
strict on the blackout and he used to patrol the
village shouting, “put that light out”, even if he
saw just a chink of light through the curtains.
We had quite a few bombs dropped around us
when the German planes bombed Bristol. If
they didn’t drop them in Bristol, they would
turn above us with their distinct engine sound.
Bombs fell at Wilcrick and Blackwall on the
moors. The loudest of all was the night three
were dropped on the Bridewell at Undy in front
of Mr and Mrs Pritchards house, now Mr &
Mrs Woods (Undy Builders) house, and
alongside the Causeway Road behind a cottage.
Thankfully there were no serious injuries.
With all that went on during this period there
was no photographic evidence, but it was very
real and we all survived.
BUSINESS IN FOCUS
FRENCH LANGUAGE TUI
WITH LA JOLIE RONDE
Children have been having fun learning
French in Magor Scout and Guide Hut for the
last 7 years. They celebrated the end of this
year ordering tasty morsels from the menu of
our impromptu Café Escargot. Learning takes
place through songs, games and practical
activities, giving them an excellent foundation
for curriculum French in secondary school.
Classes are small and the teaching is pupil
centred. The courses we follow are well
structured and progressive, building
confidence and allowing different children to
assimilate and develop at their own rate.
I was lucky enough to start learning French as
part of the curriculum in a state primary
school at the age of 6. I can still remember
coming home from school after my first
French lesson, fascinated by the idea of being
able to speak another language. French has
remained a major part of my life since that
day.
Do we need a second language? I think we do.
With the globalisation of trade and foreign
travel on most people's agenda, a second
language is a huge asset from both a social and
a working perspective. I have travelled a lot
and not only do I feel really uncomfortable in
countries where I can't speak the lingo, having
access to more than one language has been my
saviour on more than one occasion. It has also
enabled me to help out other people in
difficulty. To me it's the difference between
being a participant and a spectator.
All language experts agree that the best time
to start learning a language is as early as
possible and that furthermore, the processing
of language in a young brain helps stimulate
Cavacale, president of the National Network
for Early Language Learning says “Children
who learn a foreign language in early
childhood demonstrate certain cognitive
advantages over children who do not.”
Language learning enhances social skills,
comprehension, expression, communication
and problem solving. It encourages self
confidence and helps to shape future attitudes
towards other cultures and other languages.
(MAGOR ACTION
GROUP ON RAIL)
UPDATE
We now have around 100 members (a mixture
of residents, local politicians and business
owners) and membership continues to grow.
You may have seen in the South Wales Argus
recently an item entitled “Progress is being
made on Magor station”. It reported that
Cllr. Brian Jones has recommended
Monmouthshire council takes forward work
on a business case. This has since been
approved, which is really good news.
We now have
our own
website to
help publicise
our case and
keep you
informed. It
contains
fuller details
of the above and more. You can view it by
visiting www.magorstation.co.uk. Don’t forget
to save it in your ‘favourites’ or ‘bookmark’ it
to stay up to date with progress.
Even though we have formalised our
committee, anyone can come along to the
meetings in the Wheatsheaf Inn and have their
say – we’d be pleased to see you or any
prospective new members. Details of the
meetings (past and future) are on the website
under ‘Minutes’. In fact it would be great if
you could let your friends, family and
associates to help spread the word. This will
give us a greater chance of success.
Although we are making real progress there is
still a long way to go. Any practical support
you can give will be really welcome. In any
case, please feel free to let us know what you
think from time to time.
THE LEVELS MOTORWAY IS
BACK ON THE AGENDA
Readers may be aware that the Welsh
Government is actively considering building a
Relief Road for the M4 across the Gwent
Levels. A new consultation is expected this
September. Expected costs are believed to be
around £1.2 Billion. This could be funded by a
loan from the Tory-led government to the
Labour-led Welsh Government. If this loan
were 0% interest, for 20 years it would cost
Wales £50 Million a year to pay back. Think of
what nearly £1,000,000 a week could be spent
on to improve healthcare or schools in Wales.
The planned route would start at Magor, go
across the south of Newport and finish near
Tredegar House – similar to the route outlined
on previous occasions. Its purpose is to reduce
the traffic pressure on the M4 at Newport,
partly caused by the Bryn Glas tunnels, which
give the perception that traffic has nowhere
else to go.
A number of local organisations have got
together to begin to look at this objectively
under the title of CALM – the Campaign
Against the Levels Motorway. The
organisations include the Gwent Wildlife Trust,
the RSPB, local community councils such as
Magor/Undy, Friends of the Earth and others.
Aside from the obvious implications of
permanent scarring of the Gwent Levels and
impact on wildlife, CALM believes there are
some serious implications for local residents,
which include:
• Construction of a Relief Road would require
a larger junction or interchange than
currently at 23A on the M4. This would see
Magor and Undy effectively hemmed in.
• Permanent scarring of the Gwent Levels to
the South and East of Magor, Undy and
Rogiet, as well as to the North of Redwick.
• Significant air/noise/watercourse pollution,
affecting people and wildlife.
• Removal of the green space currently
14
enjoyed by the local community.
• The likelihood of a Relief Road being very
under-used outside of peak times, especially
if it becomes a toll road.
CALM would prefer no new roads at all, but we
understand the perception that traffic
congestion on the M4 at Newport causes
economic problems in Wales. Therefore, CALM
believes that enhancement to the existing A48
distributor road constitutes a feasible Relief
Road in place around Newport. In addition,
the new road through Llanwern is nearing
completion, thus relieving M4 traffic pressure
still further. Both these routes offer a viable
alternative to relieving peak traffic congestion.
Enhancements to make the A48 flow better
are estimated at £200 Million: this is 1/6 the
estimated cost of a new relief road.
So CALM is asking local residents to actively
support its recommendation of no new
expensive M4 Relief Road, but instead to
support the more cost effective enhancements
to the existing A48 distributor road. This will
mean letting Welsh Government know what
you think when the anticipated consultation
starts this September.
The CALM website is being reactivated we will
endeavour to keep it updated. Please visit at:
I have been very busy going door to door with
a petition against the 495 houses that are
proposed in Undy. The main issue behind this
being the already overstretched, and in some
cases, complete lack of services, facilities and
infrastructure for the already existing
population, let-a-lone the amount of new
people and cars these developments will bring.
You can view the full proposed plans at
In other news I was newly elected as the
chairman of the Severnside Dog Mess
Committee which will hopefully be successful
in further reducing the dog mess problem in
the area. I know it is a problem that affects
everyone. There have been many new bins and
bag dispensers installed since I was elected but
we still do have a problem, albeit a reduced
one. Hopefully this committee can make some
large changes across the Severnside area and
reduce the problem even further.
MAGOR SCHOOL
DRAMA CLUB
SHOWED THEIR
TALENT ON STAGE
The year is 1980. Students are praying that
they will be admitted to New York’s prestigious
High School of Performing Arts.
Inspired by the hit motion pictures, television
series, and international stage success, FAME
JR. is the story of a diverse group of students
as they commit to four years of grueling
artistic and academic work. With lots of
singing, dancing and some humour to boot, the
show explores the issues that confront many
young people today.
Once again pupils from Magor CIW Primary
School’s Drama Club have amazed staff and
parents with their talents on the stage! With
spine-tingling solos, convincing
characterisation and some backflips to boot,
the show, running over two nights, was a
resounding success.
The children also thoroughly enjoyed being
part of the production. Paige a year five pupil,
who played Iris commented, “A lot of effort has
been put into the production of FAME jr. but it
was all worth it! We were all able to shine like
stars after all the rehearsals we had to do. We
can’t wait to find out what our next
performance will be!”
INTERNATIONAL THRILLER
REACHES CLIMAX IN MAGOR
Sam Knight, who retired to Vinegar Hill, Undy
after working in the airline and oil industries,
has published his first novel, a romantic
thriller called The Milford Ultimatum.
The novel, says the publicity, takes you on a
heart-stopping journey filled with love, lies and
dangerous liaisons. as the action moves rapidly
from the Middle East to America and the UK
creating a plot which will dwarf the terror of
the 9/11 attacks.
Knight explores the dilemmas facing a
young Welsh security specialist and his
Saudi girlfriend when they are asked to risk
their careers and even their lives to fight for
justice.
“This novel started life as a story about an
expatriate experience in the Middle East. But
the suffering in Palestine led me to change
direction and write a more passionate story,
says Sam Knight on the inspiration behind his
novel.
“The reader finds himself drawn into
the action…this handling of growing
tension - even of menace – is very well
done…” is a comment from the Critical
Appraisal by a reviewer from Literature Wales.
He has been a bookseller, journalist and PR
director in the UK, before working in the
Arabian Gulf. Returning to the UK in 1996 he
set up a communications consultancy Clear
Blue Sky. His writing has appeared in Red Bull
and Planet magazines. He lives with his wife
Jean and has one son living in Switzerland.
The 300-page paperback is available from all
major booksellers, and locally from the Magor
Printing retail shop in The Square, priced at
£8.99.
CHINESE JALAPENO
CHICKEN RECIPE
This jalapeno chicken dish has been added to
many Chinese buffets in recent years. This
dish is sort of a combination of Chinese-
American and Mexican cuisines—it consists of
deep fried pieces of chicken tossed with a
sauce and jalapeno peppers. The sauce is
nothing more than a combination of soy sauce,
rice wine, and sugar. If you do not have a deep
fryer the chicken can be cooked in the pan. If
you are looking for a healthier alternative you
can skip breading the chicken and stir-fry it in
the pan. The jalapeno peppers really add a
good amount of heat to this dish and help to
create an interesting flavor. Chinese jalapeno
chicken goes great served with brown rice. If
you want extra sauce for the rice you can
double or triple the sauce ingredients. Enjoy.
Ingredients:
1lb boneless skinless chicken breasts (cut into
1 inch cubes)
¼ cup cornstarch
4 cups vegetable oil + 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
½ teaspoon chopped garlic
1 teaspoon rice wine
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 jalapeno peppers (sliced)
2 tablespoons sugar
34
Cooking Instructions:
Step 1: In a sealable plastic bowl or bag
combine the chicken and cornstarch shake
well until the chicken is evenly coated. Allow
to stand for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Heat 4 cups of vegetable oil in a deep
fryer to 375 degrees. Add the chicken and
deep fry in batches until the chicken is crispy
and fully cooked (the internal temperature has
reached 165 degrees). Drain on paper towels.
Step 3: Heat 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil in a
wok or large skillet. Add jalapenos and stir-fry
for 1 minute. Remove from the wok and set
aside. Add chopped garlic, rice wine, soy sauce,
jalapenos, and
the chicken to the
wok. Stir-fry for
about a minute.
Add the sugar
and cook until
the sauce has
thickened and
the mixture is
heated through.
UNDY FUN DAY 2013
One of the Villager Photography Club’s
summer assignments was to capture the
Magor and Undy communities having fun at
the Undy Fun Day, organised by Tesco to raise
funds for Diabetes UK, their chosen charity for
this year.
A staggering £30,000 was raised – brilliant,
but as we can see from these photos not
surprising given the number of teams that
made an effort to take part and the spectators
that turned out in support.
It really was ‘fun in the sun’ this year and the
weather tempted out a huge crowd of around a
thousand to enjoy the knockout competition,
music, fun fair and stalls.
Julian W Needs, Bob Russell and Roy Tucker
from the club caught all the fun of the day as
you can see from the images here against the
backdrop of a blue sky and bright sunshine.
The pictures are stunning and really do
capture the colour and vibrancy of the event.
Have they caught you on camera?
News from the Villager Photography Club is
that we have now moved our base to the
fabulous new Redwick Village Hall after having
outgrown our initial home at Magor Marsh.
Many thanks to Gwent Wildlife Trust for
providing us with such a good base upon which
to establish ourselves. Our move is by no
means the end of our relationship.
Redwick Village Hall provides us more space to
accommodate our growing membership. The
small group that gathered to start the club at
the beginning of the year has nearly doubled.
The depth and breadth of our photographic
knowledge has increased dramatically thanks
to the willingness of new members to share
their expertise with the whole group.
The club has loads of interesting features lined
up for members including talks from
professionals on many different aspects of
photography. Each session we aim to learn
something about the cameras we are using so
we can get more from our time using them.
We are also planning an event early in 2014 to
showcase our work to the local communities so
look out for this, we will advertise the details
locally once we have finalised the details.
If you are interested in joining us please get in
touch with Bob at bob.russell@live.uk We meet
the first Thursday of each month in Redwick
Village Hall.
