3. To present current in<strong>for</strong>mation on<br />

the supply, demand and need <strong>for</strong><br />

recreation and open space in New<br />

Jersey.<br />

4. To implement open space and<br />

recreation planning policies and<br />

projects that are consistent with<br />

the New Jersey State<br />

Development and Redevelopment<br />

<strong>Plan</strong>.<br />

5. To encourage open space and<br />

recreation planning by local<br />

governments and conservation<br />

organizations.<br />

6. To effectively use funds from the<br />

Garden State Preservation Trust,<br />

Land and Water Conservation<br />

Fund, Forest Legacy Program,<br />

Pinelands Section 502 Program<br />

and other sources of funding<br />

which may become available.<br />

The 2008 SCORP also contains<br />

findings based on research and the<br />

public participation and planning<br />

processes. The findings presented in<br />

the 2008 SCORP are:<br />

1. Open space preservation provides<br />

many amenities including water<br />

resource protection, biodiversity, recreation, agriculture, and tourism.<br />

2. New Jersey has 1,242,966 acres of preserved public open space.<br />

3. 252 local governments assessed a tax <strong>for</strong> land preservation, park and recreation projects and historic<br />

preservation in 2007, collecting over $330 million annually.<br />

4. Over $410 million in capital improvement projects have been identified as needed <strong>for</strong> state parks, <strong>for</strong>ests,<br />

historic sites and wildlife management areas.<br />

5. The State shall continue to make the protection of water resources, preservation of biodiversity and the<br />

provision of park and recreation opportunities a statewide priority.<br />

6. There is a need to preserve 700,000 acres of high value natural resources lands statewide.<br />

As with all plans identified above, the <strong>Cherry</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> Open Space and Recreation <strong>Plan</strong> seeks to maintain continuity<br />

in goals and objectives and be guided by the goals set <strong>for</strong>th by State and County plans.<br />
