2 CAPE COD SEA CAMPS 2006 2005 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Berry D. Richardson
Directrix Emerita
It’s warmed up a bit today as I write this letter, but the past couple of days have signaled the beginning of the long, cold
winter ahead. Last winter was remarkable for the amount and intensity of the snow that it produced. I think Henri will put a
picture of it on the cover of the newsletter, but you can’t imagine how camp looks with a deep, rich blanket of snow spread
across our fields, beaches and council rings.
We had a wonderful summer this past one with a great staff and exceptional group of campers. I am continually amazed
at the ability of our camps to move forward and meet the new and ever more complicated challenges that are presented to us.
While my day to day involvement in camp during the summer has eased off a bit, our Board meetings during the off-season
are a testament to the continued commitment to the vision of my parents and sisters living through the next generations of
Delahanty’s that have made camp their life’s work. I am thankful every day for this.
There is nothing that could more make this point than the commitment of our family to the new art center. While this is an
expensive undertaking for us, we know that we need to make this investment if we are to continue on. And this is not our only
investment. We are committed to replacing older cabins with new and the like. It is actually very exciting.
And on a final note, my son Bob had his 50th birthday this year. The celebration was a quiet affair down at my house
with his good friend from camp Robert Tracy in attendance. I have to reflect on it because life presents us with such interesting
and thought provoking situations. Some of you may know that I had quite a winter and spring this past year. My son Bob
was with me every step of the way. And the camp family was with me every step of the way. And with me in spirit were my
son James and my sisters Frances and Margaret. Bob’s birthday gave me pause to give thanks for this warm and loving environment
that mom and dad created. It has worked wonderfully for me and from all of the current and past campers that come
across my threshold I know it has worked for you.
If you ever have an opportunity to visit, please take advantage of it. My door is open and we’d love to see you.
Dear Friends,
CAPE COD SEA CAMPS 2006 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER
Nancy Garran
Camp Director
“Told you so!” A phrase commonly used by children to celebrate a personal success or to proclaim triumphantly they have
proved us wrong! The sometimes-annoying comment can also make me smile while envisioning a child’s proud accomplishment
of that long awaited goal.
As we approach our 85th camping season at Cape Cod Sea Camps, it is easy to say….. “Told you so!” The vibrancy of our
organization is tangible every summer as we open our doors to greet more than 1700 different eager campers and counselors.
The incredible “good” the camping experience provides is evident on a daily basis …………self-reliance, service to others, tolerance,
physical challenges and achievements, moral values and choices, developing positive relationships, and so much more.
While learning to make a bed for the first time and share in cabin clean-up chores, a camper is learning to be personally
accountable. In choosing activities for the week without Mom and Dad’s immediate approval, deciding how to manage those JC
1 requirements or just making a choice about what to eat at each meal and where to sit in the dining hall, a camper is learning
to be an independent thinker. These are some of the growth challenges facing each camper every day, every summer at camp.
The “lessons learned” are countless with the camp experience nurturing the whole person - heart, mind and spirit. In a landmark
2005 study, “Directions: Youth Development Outcomes of the Camp Experience”, the American Camp Association
(ACA) researched, documented and proved the vitally important impact of the camp experience. “The recent study confirms just
how powerfully the values of the camp experience translate into children’s lives – there were measurable gains in positive identity,
social skills, physical and thinking skills, and positive values and spirituality,” as explained by Peg Smith, ACA Chief
Executive Officer. We can exclaim profoundly we have known that for 84 years! “Told you so!”
We passionately believe in our mission of serving youth and are committed to thriving in the 21st century. In 2003 we developed
a Master Site Plan, really a “facility roadmap”, to drive us into the future. Over the last couple of years we have renovated
and rebuilt cabin facilities and buildings, improved program areas and program offerings and used the site plan to focus our
resources on achieving future goals for the business.
On October 31st we reached another milestone as we watched a 50-year old art shed/garage quickly razed to begin work on
our first major project of our Master Plan, a new Art Center. With the support of our CCSC Board of Directors, input from
seasonal and year-round staff along with a local architectural firm, we are confident we have created a remarkably beautiful
“signature” building to compliment our historically elegant “Big House”. The Art Center will open this summer and accommodate
100 campers and counselors in a 2500 square foot building with rooms for a clay studio, ceramics and clay firing, wax and
jewelry making, an open airy multi purpose gathering space in the center, storage rooms, accessible bathrooms, skylights and a
soaring glass wall facing south to welcome the prevailing winds and streaming sunlight. The building will be heated for use in
the off-season as well as a focal point for the campus. We are so thrilled and excited to begin this journey towards our vision of
Cape Cod Sea Camps in the 21st century.
“Camp” performs an essential role in the positive growth and development of youth. As we march forward into our 85th camp
season, we take great pride in our longevity, our increasing popularity as well as our relevance and effectiveness as a youth centered
organization. We continue to believe “Camp” and all that it encompasses has the potential to positively influence young
people’s lives and we are fervently committed to that mission – “Told you so!”
We encourage your connection throughout the year. If you would like our current information for any of our camping programs,
please let us know. Have a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
From my council ring to yours,
A n n u a l R e p o r t 2005
Our fundraising was off a little bit this year due to the cancellation of our Summer
Fundraising event at Berry’s. We took in close to $16,500 and as of September 30, 2005 had
approximately $270,000 in the Fund. Of that $16,500, $6000 of due to the solicitation made
in the wake of the unfortunate passing of Eric Jacober, a resident camp Monomoy JC 3. We
had some great kids this summer who availed themselves of the scholarships that we offered.
With the Fund continuing to grow, our hopes are this summer to expand the number of
Got a nice card from Lynne Hanna Lund (W’47-’58) letting
us know that she had moved to St. George, UT. Lynne is a
retired art teacher and world ranked master swimmer. (She
remembers winning “Best Swimmer” a couple of times at
Wono.) She’s made a few commercials and remembers winning
excellence in Dramatics at camp too. Audrey Higgins
Look at this crew!! From left to right: Marilyn Koch Francis (W’forever),
Diane Greenberger Ragins (W’46-‘58), Paddy Morrisey Cahill (W’46-‘57),
Jane Sterling (W’40-‘58), Corky Lindemann Studley (W’43-‘57), Nancy
Greenberger Schmidt (W’40-‘55) and Audrey Higgins Rich (W’45-‘53).
Rich (W’45-’53) wrote us a little note about the picture of
her daughter Marilyn Rich in last year’s newsletter with Sue
Lindemann Staropoli. Audrey also corrected an error in a
prior newsletter where I referred to her as Heggie – it is
Higgie. Hayden Hawthorne (M’46-’51) dropped a line after
reading the 2005 newsletter. He especially liked reading
about Dan Tousley (M’ ) who was his counselor in the
Junior Scouts when he was a JC along with Frank Garran
(M’46-‘50), Dick Ostrander and Ted Shay. Jim Vickory was
the other JC. He has found some old pictures and hopes to
bring them by camp some time. I’m all for that!! Particularly
if they have names on them. Frank Blatz (M’48-‘52) stopped
by a visit with Joanne Freyberg Moss (W’48-’54). Frank
expressed some disappointment that the folks in the office
didn’t remember what happened to him and Joanne one
summer when they misbehaved a bit. Well….I would tell
you that Berry remembered and had quite a chuckle about
it. We heard from Peter Rose (M’44-’45) that he and his
brother, Charles Rose (M’44-’45), are fine. Charles has his
Phd from Columbia and is a Medieval Historian. Charles
lives in New York. Peter believes that he was a Hunter in
1945 and that Al Hart was his head counselor. His interest
in communicating with us was triggered by a picture in last
year’s newsletter. Charlotte Moeller Vaughn (W’46-’52)
stopped by for a visit. She remembered winning Best Bed
and getting a Hoodsie ice cream reward for it as well as loving
Riflery, Archery, Sailing and Arts & Crafts.
The 60’s
The 5th generation of
Delahanty’s at CCSC:
Jordan and Taylor Hill.
The twins are the daughters
of Mary Jane Austin
(CCSC’74-‘05) and Joe
Korecki. Both Mary Jane
and Carol are on the CCSC
Board of Directors.
Doug Frank (M’65-’70) has finally made it into our data
base. He is living in New York and has two children. Jan
Whitlock’s (W’60-’62) daughter, Jenny Wise (CCSC’96-’03)
wrote us to tell us that her mother recently got engaged to
Mike Whaley. Got an email from Peter Lamborn (M’65-’69)
who started as a Brave and went on to be a JC1. He was
excited to know that Rick Moyer was still here. He also
made inquiries about Rick Francis and Grant. I had a nice
series of email correspondence with Jim Maxner (M’56-’62).
I spent a summer with Maxner in the Beach House our JC 1

CAPE COD SEA CAMPS 2006 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 7
year. Jim mentioned that he was fortunate to have know
people like Grant, Chappy Chappell, Dick Clem, Uncle Jim,
Frank Tracy, and Big Al Douglas. He remembered working
as a waiter in the dining hall and riding in Charlie Linnell’s
jeep truck on top of a load of sleeping bags on the way to
Long Pond. He goes on to say:”I was lucky to have had a
birthday in mid summer and looked forward each year to
being called up by Grant to get the traditional whack with
the tray! Hap Farnum was a a great head counselor and I’ll
never forget the sometimes discordant sounds of the band as
we marched around the dining hall. Some of the campers I
remember well are Arnie Cohen, Bill Millard, Cappy Pearson,
Billy Korallis, theWilson brothers, the Rauschenbach brothers,
Bobby Johnson, Peter Sparrow, Nicky Hammond and Andy
Lack who taught us to do the twist when we were Seniors.
Jim lives in Cumberland, Maine and is a partner with North
Atlantic Maritime Services. He is married and has two
grown daughters and a grandchild. Ellen Humphrey Stewart
(W’63-’64) stopped by with her husband Don not too long
ago. “Sissy” lives in Ithaca, NY. Susan Schuyler Smith
(W’53-‘63) recollects starting Wono as an Apprentice
Seaman and winding up as a JC in the Crow’s Nest in her
last summer as a counselor. She won Excellence in Sailing as
a JC 3 times in a row and she has the cup to prove it. She
also expressed an interest in a Florida Reunion which I am
working on with Julia Fraser (W’69-‘81), who lives in Ft.
Lauderdale. Dave Richardson (M’62-’69) has retired and is
living in Lewisville, TX. He worked as an OBGYN and is
now reflecting fondly on his time at camp. We have to wonder
if the “Wild Dave” that we remember will re-emerge.
We heard from Alex Peacock (M’64-’65) who recounted a
tale of chance encounter to us. He was playing in a USTA
tournament in Indianapolis last summer and played against a
guy named Steve Webster. During a chance discussion at the
Otis catches up to Charlie Perlo (M’61-‘73) at City of Palms Park, Fl in
March of this past year for a Yankees Red Sox Spring Training game.
lunch hour, he found out that Steve had been at Monomoy
during the summer of ’64 & ’65. Alex’s family is a three
generation camp family with his father John Peacock, and
his brother Jay Peacock and his niece Morgan Peacock having
all attended. Susan Cloud Marino (W’63-’68) has let us
know that she is living in Darte, CA and is married. Got an
email from David Brewster (M’60’s) who had just received
CCSC
the newsletter and didn’t know who put him on the mailing
list. Maybe his brother Wayne Brewster? David remembers
starting as a Junior Scout with a head counselor named
Sarge. Who could forget Sarge. He won Best Sport that
summer and remembers it as the most memorable summer
of his life. He remembers Tim Shriner and Pedro from
Puerto Rico. It was great to hear from him. Rick Britton
(M’54-’61) recently emailed us looking for the password to
Cory Arberg visits with Michael Halperson last year in San Diego. Cory is
now in Memphis working on a graduate degree in speech pathology.
look camp over on the Web. He commented that while
things look different, some things appear to be the same. I
thought about that for a while. Rick and his brother when
from being a Junior Scout up to the JC’s. Stephen Breimer
(M’64-’65) recently updated his information with us and is
living in Los Angeles, CA. Berry got a lovely reflective note
from Judy Shaw Gilmour after the wedding of her son
Christopher (CCSC’84-‘04) to Tara Trenholm (CCSC’01).
Judy reflected on the incredible coincidence that 42 years
ago in 1963 she and Linda Svigals Martinelli were co-counselors
in Cabin 7 in the Seamen’s unit. 42 years later their
children celebrated weddings within a week of each other –
Christopher attending the wedding of Jen Martinelli
(CCSC’88-‘97) and Nick Martinelli (CCSC’89-‘02) attending
the wedding of Christopher. Kind of gives one pause.
Robert Hinds (M’61) dropped us a note to let us know that
he is living in Vestavia Hills, AL. He has two grown children.
The 70’s
Kristi Kline Wellbeloved (W’73-CCSC’77) emailed us from
Tuczon, AZ informing us that she was hoping to stop by
with her kids and visit us. She has a lot of fond memories of
camp. Josh Hauser (M’68-’74) emailed us last February
looking for a camp song book. Turns out he is singing the
old Monomoy Junior Scout song and Hunter song to his
boys when they go to bed. It seems he wants to diversify the
number of songs he is singing – thus the request. We sent
him a copy of the 75th Anniversary song book. He is living
in Vancouver and wonders what ever happened to the Del
Tones. Patricia Scaltsas Regan (CCSC’74-’75) is living on
the Cape in Orleans. John Geenty (M’71-’73) is married and
lives in Worcester with his two children. Judi Gaudrault

Higgins (W’67-CCSC’75) dropped us a note looking for her
’05 Jib Sheet. She is working for an insurance company in
Maine and her son Darby should be married by now. There
is a sense that she will visit us sometime at camp. Kevin
Kelleher (CCSC’75-’77) has informed us that he is living in
New York City. And some more New York City news –
Whitney Rauschenbach (MDC’87 -CCSC’00) says hi from Bowdoin college
where she is a senior and a member of the Sailing Team. She is pictured
here with her Assistant Sailing Coach – none other than Andy Stern
(CCSC’93-‘05) who has worked at Camp for a number of years coaching
our summer sail race team.
Mark Brennan (CCSC’74-’75) recently moved from 75th St
to 64th Street. Dawn Eder Sindoni (W’72-’74) touched base
with and gave us her address. She liked our web site. She
remembered her counselors Lynn Brilliant (W’58-‘73) and
Alice Barber Guariglio (W’64-‘05) in the Midshipmen and
Dunn, Pete, Joanne, Wendy, and Super. Friends she remembered
were Cindy Toole, Cheryl Goodman, Sally, Debbie
from Pittsburgh, Pam Puffer, and Jean Grotzinger. Dawn is
living in Boothwyn, PA. We had some correspondence and
A reunion of all four members of the 1998 Jr. Scout staff: Scott Willison
(CCSC’91-‘00), Jeremy Munson (CCSC’97-‘99), Phil McCarthy (CCSC’88-
‘93&’98), and Mike Moran (CCSC’89-‘01). They were and are the great big
hairy chested men. The legend of Kelligrew lives on.
2006 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER
then a visit from Andy and Sue Cobb (M & W’73) who are
living in Dorset in the UK. They spent a summer with us as
counselors and came back for a lovely visit. Karen
Finklestein (W’71-CCSC’77) let us know recently that her
family is continuing the CCSC tradition with her cousin’s
daughter who is in her second year at camp and loves it.
Karen lives in Pembroke Pines, FL. All the way from the
Netherlands comes a message from Jan Willem van Rhijn
(M’73) looking to touch base back with the many people
that he remembered from his summer at Monomoy. He
remembered Scat McIntyre (M’56-‘74) and his son Andy
(M’66–CCSC’03) who he met up with after camp in
Baltimore. He also went to Buffalo and saw Chris Kryder
(M’69-’73) and then went to Long Island and visited with
Jeff Chinman. If anyone would like to get in touch with
him, let me know and I’ll forward on his email address. We
heard from Paul Luby (M’72-CCSC’82) not to long ago
Robert (aka “Bob”) Richardson (M’60–CCSC’05) and his daughters
Maya(CCSC’01)and Kanchan (CCSC’98 –’05) at the Oscars this past year.
As many of you know –
Robert won his second Oscar in the Cinematography category for Aviator.
Robert is also a member of the CCSC Board of Directors.
who updated us on the whereabouts of his cousin Joan
Mansfield because Lainey Feingold (W’66-’73) was looking
for it. Joan is living in Maine. Melinda Mitchell Shumway
(W’66-‘CCSC’75) passed along Laurie Chinman Getto’s
(W’69-’74) address to us – she lives in Hacketstown, NJ and
also mentioned that Laurie’s son had written a fabulous
movie script – (psst – are you reading this Bob??). Jeff
Chinman now lives in Englewood, NJ. The inimitable Mike
Gilbert (M’66-’74) let us know that the newsletter brought
back many memories (“all good, of course”). He is currently
living in Southern California and would like anyone in the
area to get in touch with him. We will try to have a reunion
or a lunch out there later this year. Steve Cowles (M’71-
CCSC’78) sends along his best to Wally, Lynn, Jean, Emily,
Frosty, Karen, Lubes, John M and all his now full grown
Junior campers. Steve is living in Ridgefield, CT. We heard
from Sue Read (W’71-’72) who is living in Frankfort, NY.
She had a number of siblings that worked at CCSC includ-

ing David aka Speed Davis, John, Jane and Doug. She is
going to share the newsletter with them and as well get
some of her older photos to me. I like that. Lane Decoster
(CCSC’75-’80) sent along his address in Cheshire, CT and
reflected positively on the Jib Sheet (ed note – this is appropriate
behavior). Lane is working in the insurance industry
in Stamford, CT and spends the summer sailing/cruising out
of Mystic, CT. He informs us that his sister Terri DeCoster
Grasso is living in Falmouth, ME and bumps into Richard
and Emily Bloch Frost from time to time. Lane also thought
it was amazing to see David Burwick (M’70-CCSC’82) on
TV last year with a Trump. Andy McIntyre (M’66-CCSC’80)
+ early millennium is still playing a lot of music and teaching.
Susan Gellerman (W’72-CCSC’80) is still working with
her company Fantastic Transcripts. Having read the ’05
newsletter, she was looking for the whereabouts of Beau
Stinette (M’74-CCSC’78). Ellen O’Toole Hubbard
(CCSC’75-’79) dropped by for a visit. The former Best Sport
and Best Camper is now living in W. Cornwall, CT. Former
Middler Magic Mountain Head Counselor David Burwick
(M’70-CCSC’82) is moving on with Pepsi to run its
Canadian Operations. He will be based in Toronto. We are
A day at the beach – Melinda Mitchell Shumway (W’66-‘75) with her
daughter Caroline (CCSC’99-‘02) and Brianne Corcoran (CCSC’99-’05).
This picture was taken at Point of Woods on Fire Island at the end of this
past summer.
talking about having a Canadian Reunion – so if you’re
Canadian and you are up there and you want to help plan a
reunion – let me know.
The 80’s
We heard from Cassie Sylvester Sutton (CCSC’82-’86) that
she is living in Plano, TX and her father Jay Sylvester
(M’66-CCSC’86) is living in Dallas, TX and her brother
Jeremy Sylvester (CCSC’76-’86) is living in Evansville, IN.
Andy Meyers (CCSC’78-’81) wrote from his perch as the
Chair of the History Department at the Fieldston School.
His wife Beth, who was a counselor with Andy, works in a
private practice in psychiatry. They live in Riverdale, NY.
Andy penned a nice paragraph which captures, I think, the
CCSC
essence of the recollective camp state – “We just go the
Yardarm and I was filled with warm memories. I have vivid
images of sailing the Mercs on a stormy day, of Henri, in
foul weather gear, doing some heroic skippering –note: I like
this part -, of finally dropping a ski at Long Pond, of Steve’s
advice and his Honda ‘lude, of all my pals in the cabin, of
pater familias Grant and uncle familias Otis, of the caring
attention of Sherry, of the guidance of Nancy and Dave, and
of course Berry, eyes twinkling, watching over it all.” We
What an odd confluence at Locke Ober’s in Boston: Lindsay Leal(CCSC ’02-
05), the venerable Nick Marinelli (CCSC’89-‘02), Lorin Alusic (CCSC’85-
‘98), Brian Lutes (CCSC’85-’05) and Megan Schmillen (CCSC’01-’05).
Backed into a corner is your correspondent.
have seen a lot of Kate “the Great” Anthony Blatz
(CCSC’83-’89) over the course of this past winter and
spring. She has gotten involved with our alumni group and
has been working to help Phil Sawyer (M’68-CCSC’79) and
myself seek out and solicit potential donors for the GWK
Fund. Jonathan Esar (CCSC’84-’87) is living in Markham,
Ontario and is married to Stacey. Valerie Ryan Meitzler
(CCSC’75-’83) recently updated her information and has
informed us that she has two children – Marley and
Mackenzie. She is living in Memphis. She also is working
with her husband in their restaurant Café 61. So if you’re in
Memphis – stop by and try it out. Some new information
has arrived from the Brashich sisters, Audrey (CCSC’79-’82)
and Alexis (CCSC’79-’81) about their whereabouts. Audrey
writes (and she is freelance writer for teen and women’s
magazines and has her first book coming out in early 2006)
that she is living in Vancover, BC and is married to a Swede
named Christopher Sjoholm. She toured camp on the way
back from a wedding on Nantucket last year and thought
the place looked great and brought back a lot of memories.
Her sister Alexis Morledge is now the Director of
Development at the Greenvale School. She has two sons and
is married to a physician. Brad Sage (CCSC’88-’89) recently
updated his information. He is living in New York. Paddy
Charles (MDC’88-’89) writes that he moved to New
Zealand in 1998 for the sailing, windsurfing and outdoor
lifestyle. He works as an engineer at the Airport. Former
really hot sailor and former Namequoit person who emigrated
to CCSC, Eric Woodman (CCSC’86-’87) is now
thinking about entering our Alumni Regatta. I would just

tell him that he should be prepared to go into training. He
lives in Framingham, MA. He stopped by a couple of
months ago and saw Ed Barber. Kari Kiefer Ahern
(CCSC’85-‘05) sent along a note that Lynn Burns (CCSC’85)
would like to get on our mailing list. Kari is our official
alumni photographer sort of – actually only when she feels
Again – Michael is rivaling Sherry for the number of photos here: Here he
is with Laura Smith (CCSC’83-‘00). This picture was taken this past spring
at the Boston Cotillion. ed. Note: your correspondent was there, but his
picture was awful and he chose not to include it for your viewing pleasure).
like it- actually not that much really – actually I shouldn’t
have mentioned it. Brett Schweizer (CCSC’85-’89) is living
in Atlanta and has two children. We have heard again from
Laura Moll Taber(CCSC’73-’83) that she is now in Oakland,
CA with her husband Dave and children Evan and Jeremy.
Former Raftco ingénue Nancy Richardson Murphy
(CCSC’83-’84) was intrigued to write due to the confluence
of seeing Robert Richardson getting his second Oscar and
getting the alumni newsletter. She was amazed to look at the
’05 newsletter and see that Garran Peterson has risen up to
be Sailing Master. She is currently living in Florida with her
husband and 3 children. She was also excited to see that
Evan Mead (CCSC’77-‘86) had gotten married. So was I.
Ben Schlosser (M’72-CCSC’87) is living in Cornellius, NC
and works for Richard Childress Racing. Mark Campbell
(CCSC’80) is a former Canadian who now lives in St. Louis
where he works for a small college. Harvey Gilmour was
involved in his transition to the camps for the season that he
worked for us. He mentioned that he is still in touch with
Laura Moll Taber. And last but not least – Jamal Hayden
(CCSC’82-’90) said that he and Alex Darrow (CCSC’) were
hoping to make the NY reunion – but they didn’t. Andrew
McGoey (CCSC’81-’84) wrote to tell us that the most fun
he had in his life was camp. He felt it was awesome. So do
we. He is living in Brooklyn, NY. We heard from Louise
Parmelee Sylvester (W’61-CCSC’86) and her husband Jerry
(M’) swung by and visited with Berry not to long ago.
Berry was happy that they came by. Louise and Jerry are
still living in Bethlehem, PA.
The 90’s
The mother of Alexis (CCSC’89-’92) and Kara (CCSC’89-
which was particularly pleasing to us. Alexis married Scott
Stephan in 2001 and is a physician working as a Fellow in
Intensive Care Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in
Philadelphia. Kara has recently married Mischa Duncan and
lives in Englewood, NJ. She is the founder and president of
showroomaccess.com which is an internet based company
representing Fashion Designers. Ross Schulman (CCSC’92-
’93) was recently pondering camp and wrote to us seeking
Allison Heath Cotton (W’68-‘73) with her new best friend Henry Kissinger.
Allison was attending an event with Melinda Mitchell Shumway honoring
her uncle Bill Buckley.
information about an old friend of his whose last name he
couldn’t quite remember. He is seeking Amelia who was
there when he was there. If this name rings a bell with anyone
– contact me and I will pass it along to him. Ross is cur-
Otis, Iggy and Ben Schlosser ((M’72-CCSC’87) in the pits at Daytona.
Ben is the Vice-President of Marketing for Richard Childress Racing.
rently living in Washington, DC. (note: we do have an
Amelia O’Dowd in our data base (CCSC’90-’95), but her
address in Long Valley, NJ is inactive.) Ralph Vatner
(CCSC’89-’96) is residing in Farmington, CT and thinking
about getting in touch with old camp friends. If anyone
wants to get in touch with him – get in touch with me and I
will let you know how to get in touch with him. Ed. Note:
this seems like an exhausting process and yet it really isn’t.
and welcome in the new.
And yet we have to.
So, when our Board of Directors voted to build a
But at the same time, we had to say goodbye to a
wonderful friend who had served us long and well.
We hope to have a nice event during our Alumni
A
Letter
from a former
Monomoy Day Camper
I attended Monomoy Day Camp from 1981-1990. My older
sister, Jill, and I remember being at the "old" camp, before
you had to walk a bit to get to the ocean. Even years after
the camp's location moved to its present spot, I continued to
think of everything as new. Last Fall I stopped by to visit
the campus, something that always evokes wonderful memories.
I spent time at the memorial tree for my childhood
friend and co-camper, and I looked down on the archery
targets that always caused me such angst... I am grateful
that my parents still have a place on the Cape so I can drive
by and see the camp whenever I'm visiting.
I am currently an attorney specializing in Investment
Management at a large law firm in New York. I went to
Bowdoin College ('98), worked as a crisis management consultant
in New York and then an Associate Editor for a
national newspaper before going to law school at Boston
College Law School ('03). I love living in Manhattan but
don't enjoy the 5-hr commute back to Chatham... I have an
adorable dog named Truman - no kiddies yet. Although
times have certainly changed, I recall with happiness my
times at Monomoy - particularly those memories that
involve my camp friends Jessica Metters and Cacky and
Danni Nolan. Although I'm no longer in touch with them, I
enjoy remembering the fun times we had as we made gymp
bracelets, etc. I also remember that Jason Fox could make
me laugh like it was nothing for him.
Just wanted to get in touch and let you know that yet
another Monomoy Day Camp alum is doing well. Many
wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving
THOUGHTS
WHILE RIDING:
By Otis-Director of the Mighty Monomoy Day Camp
December 2005
The biggest news that I have to tell you is that the Art
Building is gone. Not like stolen, but torn down by a huge
power crane. The whole winter staff was out there watching,
and to our amazement it took a total of 20 minutes for
the building to be leveled. We are all very excited to watch
the construction, as it progresses, of the new Art Complex.
CCSC
2006 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER
In fact, they are pouring the foundation at this time. When
you arrive at camp for the 2006 season, the beautiful art
building will be the first thing that you will notice.
I have very fond memories of the season of 2005. Weather
and staff are the two key components that go into the making
of a great summer season. The weather was fantastic,
with the exception of some rain during the week of July
4th.. We canceled the Spirit Assembly that Friday (July 8th
to be exact) for only the second time in my 20 years as the
Director of the Mighty Monomoy Day Camp. The weather
was gorgeous for the remainder of the summer. The staff
was a real strength. Think back to all of the great counselors
you had while you were here. I want to thank our
staff for a job well done.
We had some BIG excitement around camp after you left.
Christin Healey (the wonderful Department Head of Art at
the Mighty Monomoy Day Camp) and Andrew “Crash”
Sims (the Registrar and Administrator at the Mighty
Monomoy Day Camp) were married. The wedding was held
on campus (after all-they met on campus). It was a joyous
and beautiful event. CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. AND
MRS ANDREW SIMS.
The camp news from “Crash” is that we are just about all
filled up for next summer. The availability for the summer
of 2006 is listed in this publication in another section. We
have heard from a number of our staff and a very large
number will be returning. That is good news. All indications
are that we are heading toward another great-great summer
at the Mighty Monomoy Day Camp. We cannot wait to see
you next summer and have the “Best Summer Ever”.
This is truly one of the sleeper events of the year for our Alumni. Our second Alumni Regatta hosted by the
Courageous Sailing Center in the Charlestown Navy Yard last June 9th was just great. Bryan Peugh (formerly of
Raftco) is a great host and obviously a better sailor than most of us. But the evening on the harbor is beautiful and the
races challenging and intriguing. As you can see by the results below, except for Peugh we were all fairly close together.
Make it a point to join us next year.
2005
There is nothing quite like
this event that overtakes our
ways that are hard to
describe. With our significant
efforts to raise money, to volunteer
and to provide emotional
support for thousands
of riders and those they ride
for, it is an amazing camp
experience. Many alumni and
by to cheer with our kids. It is
a memorable
experience for all of us.
Well… we had a great time in Boston this past year. A
strong turnout and a great effort by Sel de la Terre made for
an ambiance that only accentuated the memories and feelings
Dear Camp Family,
Change & Cape Cod Sea Camps
CCSC
Group Business Report 2005
In many ways these two thoughts don’t seem to have much to connect them. Yet, seemingly
immeasurably, time passes and changes happen here at Camp. 2005 was a year that
had more change than usual in the Group Business. To begin with we have added more
seasonal staff to help share the operational aspects of the business. Rob Percarpio and
Garran Peterson joined Jim Fay as the Group Staff for the spring season. They were a
huge help and provided a tremendous service to the schools and other groups that use our
grounds in the spring for their programs. Even though Rob and Jim didn’t stay for the
fall, Garran has continued on in this capacity to help with our groups this fall. It has been
fun to recognize the new challenges we face and to respond to them. Changes in our staff
insure the quality of personal service that we are known for so well.
Then there were lots of changes in our customer base. Our customers have been coming
here for so long that we now have a rash of Group Leader retirements! Although many
times, these groups have been able to find a new leaders to continue their programs, there
are times when we lose a customer, be it a school, or church or otherwise. One of our
solutions to this dilemma for new leaders is our Annual Leadership Weekend. This year, I
will host our 10th Annual Leadership Weekend from April 28th to 30th, 2006. It is a time
for group leaders – new and old - and their staff to be here at camp, free of charge, to
become familiar with both Camp and the exploration of the Cape. That way, the leader is
more comfortable, more experienced, before they arrive here with their students. I provide
a program (mostly based in marine sciences) and we all have lots of fun! If you want to
know more or know of a teacher who would benefit by this program and has an interest
in bringing a group here to camp, please let me know.
There are changes on the grounds, too. As you know, there is a new Art room being built.
This is a space that will be shared in the off-season and I look forward to seeing how this
will best suit the future of the Group Business!
I remain at the Group desk though my role has changed, also. I have had a very busy fall
that included lots of travel. The highlight was attending the NMSA (National Middle
School Assoc) annual conference held two weeks ago in Philadelphia. I exhibited for camp
and had LOTS of interest. I also loved “Philly”!
My thoughts for the holidays have changed, too - they are even deeper and more heartfelt
than past years! Please accept my best wishes for only the best that the
coming season has to offer.
Sincerely,
Cheryl

CAPE COD SEA CAMPS 20066 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 29
Gilbert Tanis – Gil Tanis passed away this year and
leaves a huge hole in the Dartmouth University
community. Gil is pictured here with his wife Frances
who pre-deceased him. Gil was a long time Dartmouth
Administrator and as well a philanthropist. While Gil’s
kids went to camp and one of them married into the
Barber clan – Gil also had it in his heart to support the
efforts of the Grant W. Koch Scholarship Fund. His
generosity was recognized several years ago by the Fund.
He was really the ultimate camp parent.
Rene “Joe” Laplante
Gilbert Tanis
Rene “Joe” Laplante (M’63-CCSC’94) - Joe was the heart
and soul of our camp kitchen for many years following the
departure of Walter Sinervo. There are not enough words to
describe the commitment that he gave to the camps and our
campers to provide a high quality dining experience. People
still talk about the ice cream and breads that were the hallmark
of his tenure. Joe started with us in 1963 coming up
from Woonsocket, RI and stayed until a stroke caused him to
retire in 1994. He enjoyed cooking, the beach, woodworking
and construction as well as watching his sons play sports.
He will be deeply missed by all of us.
CCSC
In Memory of Eric
May 8, 1989 – March 26, 2005
On behalf of the JC Corps and entire camp community,
I want to thank all of those who contributed
to the Eric Jacober Memorial Fund. As
you may know, Eric, age 15, and his parents
were killed in a plane crash on March 26, 2005.
Eric joined the CCSC family as a JC 1 in 2003.
He enjoyed sailing, art, photography and almost
anything technical or mechanical. He was a selfdescribed
“tech guy” but in truth he was much
more. Eric was a kind, caring, compassionate
young man who loved the Cape Cod Sea Camps
and his many friends here. He was very much
looking forward to his JC III year.
For me, some of the most poignant moments following
Eric’s death were talking with many members
of his family, each taking time to reflect on
Eric’s passion for CCSC and the JC Corps. At the
cemetery, Eric’s brother David said of camp, “It’s
all he ever talked about” At Shiva, his aunt told
me, “Camp changed Eric’s life.” And, with a long
line backing up behind me, Eric’s grandmother
sat, held my hand, and spoke expansively of the
valuable role that CCSC played in helping Eric
navigate the inevitable twists and turns of adolescence.
Equally memorable was July 24th, the day the JC
Corps celebrated Eric’s life in a series of special
ceremonies that can only be characterized as
remarkable – made so by the poise, respect, and
love so in evidence that day. Indeed, Eric left for
all of us a legacy of leadership and friendship.
His gift is a timeless example for us to follow as
we live our lives.
