Message
from
The CEO
What an amazing several weeks it’s been!
In the lead up to the City2Surf, the office was literally abuzz with phone calls
and emails from current supporters and new fans alike registering to be part of
this world famous event. It was so pleasing to see the sponsorships and donations
come flooding in too!
I won’t go into too much detail about City2Surf, as this special edition of The
Cure features a whole section dedicated to this amazing event. But it would be
remiss of me not to mention that WE DID IT! We not only reached, but exceeded
our $100k target by a good $20+K, to secure the title of the 2009 City2Surf’s
number one fundraiser! And we did it because of your support, so a tremendous
thank you to everyone who pitched in.
While our feet may still be tired, we’re by no means resting on our laurels in
the wake of our success – it’s all guns blazing in preparation for our inaugural
Melbourne Cup day event, Cup Day at THE STABLES.
I look forward to seeing you all there!
Caroyln Dodds

A Record 183 Attend August
Family Group Gatherings
Once again, the Cure Our Kids Family Group Gatherings proved a
tremendous success.
Held over three eventful nights, the seven dinners (which were at Coffs Harbour, Nowra,
Parramatta, North Ryde, Penrith, Bathurst and Gosford) were attended by a record
total of 183 parents of children who’ve had a child go through cancer treatment
at Westmead.
Together parents enjoyed a great meal, laughed, cried (in North Ryde they sang!) and
shared stories of amazing courage. As always, new friendships were formed and old
ones renewed.
A program designed to promote solidarity and generate mutual support amongst
parents going through a similar challenge, the Family Group Gatherings are now in their
third year. Here’s what some of the parents had to say:
“Cure Our Kids has provided our family the opportunity to share our experience and raise
awareness which is therapy in itself. We have been able to stay in contact with other wonderful
families who share the same sort of situation.”
“Everyone was warm and friendly and were sharing
their stories throughout the night... We swapped email
addresses and I am sure we will keep in touch.”
“A really lovely dinner, thank you so much for your work
and support. Much appreciated!”
Cancer Survivor
Gets On Board!
Over the next several weeks, Jasmin Mills will
join us as an intern and valued marketing
assistant. Jasmin was diagnosed with
osteosarcoma in 2001 at the age of 13 and
is now in remission. As part of her double
degree in Law and Public Communications,
she will be assisting Cure Our Kids with our
marketing strategy and
social media. Jasmin’s
personal insight into
the plight of families at
the Westmead cancer
unit coupled with her
specialised skills ensures
she’ll be a great asset
to the team.

Spotlight on Survival Kits
When families are first admitted to the children’s cancer unit at Westmead, they
are usually not prepared for a lengthy stay. To help them survive those first few
shell-shocked days, Cure Our Kids provides all newly diagnosed families with
Survival Kits. Containing a range of useful items such as toiletries, vouches
for the hospital café and parking and diary, Survival Kits help make life that
essential bit easier during a very stressful time.
Thank You from the Burtons An email to Cure Our Kids from Jodi Burton..
I will never forget the day I received my expecting, along the lines of “she might
Survival Kit. It felt like Christmas. We opened need some antibiotics and a patch”.
ours when we got home and my son Josh
was so excited. You see, when we found
Jess’s tumour it was during the holidays
(Monday 13th October) and we were on
our way to Movie World then all of a sudden
our lives were on the biggest rollercoaster
ride imaginable.
He then sent us to Brisbane where we met
with Dr Gyles who is a paediatric eye doctor
and he confirmed it was cancer. Not once
did my six year old son, Josh, ask when we’ll
be going to Movie World. I think he knew
by the tears in our eyes our holiday was
over. We drove back that night and arrived
Instead of going to the theme park we home Tuesday lunchtime. Wednesday we
drove to the Gold Coast Hospital where we went for a catscan and on Saturday Jess
met four different eye specialists and then lost her eye.
finally an American doctor who basically
said: “Your daughter has cancer and will
probably lose her eye by the end of the
week.” A big difference from what we were
The next day was to be Josh’s sixth birthday
and I had organised a huge surprise party
for him and 20 of his friends at a nearby park.
I had to ring all the parents and cancel the
party. So poor Josh had his birthday at the
hospital with his baby sister.
Jess and I came home again the following
Tuesday and Josh’s eyes lit up for the first
time in I don’t know how long to see soooo
much stuff in one bag. I know for a fact that
both Jess and Josh’s favourite thing is the
Tom and Jerry DVD – they still watch it today.
You see, you made my son’s day and made
up for all he had lost. Jess was not the only
one suffering and that bag full of goodies was
the most exciting thing, besides his mum and
sister being home, that Josh had seen in ages.
Thank you for everything you do and please
keep up the good work.
All our love, Jodi and the Burtons
ALDI Fills Survival Kits
A huge thank you
to ALDI for their
recent donation
of products for
the Survival Kits.
The cut-price
supermarket chain
has contributed a
number of cartons
of personal hygiene items including
deodorant, toothpaste and shampoo. The
donation will be much appreciated by
more than 150 newly diagnosed families
over the coming year.
Play Therapy Grants
Cure Our Kids would like to thank the following organisations for their recent generous
contributions towards the Play Therapy program for financial year 2009-10.
Masonicare – $4,660
Blackhill CDSE – $5,493.62
Woolworths Brookvale – $1,000
The program provides an opportunity for
kids to safely explore and express their
feelings, and to reconnect with the joyous
spontaneity of childhood. This much-loved
program also teaches children techniques
to help them cope with painful procedures,
helping them gain a sense of control over their experience.
Welcome Leah
Cure Our Kids would like to welcome Leah Allan as our new
Business Manager. Having worked in communications for
the Australian Army for close to eight years, Leah’s decision
for a career change coincided nicely with our needing a
dedicated, highly organised professional to assume the
position. Leah’s role will be to take care of Cure Our Kids’
books and to oversee the charity’s day-to-day operations.

Patient of the Month – Jessie Burton
At not quite three years of age, Jessie
Burton is one spirited little battler. Having
been diagnosed last October with
retinoblastoma, she’s endured painful
chemotherapy and the loss of her right
eye. And yet, according to her mother
Jodi, she’s never once complained. Jessie
finished up treatment in February of this
year and has been given the all clear. In
Jessie’s own words, she’s "hanging to get
back to pre-school" which she’ll do after her
next routine scan. Here, Jodi shares with us
a some of Jessie’s favourite things.
Favourite colour?
Today it’s black, but mostly pinks and purples.
Favourite toy?
Jessie has many favourites, mostly anything
to do with outside like bikes, scooters or
buckets and shovels. She does also like to
play with her Barbies.
Favourite food?
Jess has many favourite foods but I think
prawns would have to go down as one of
the preferred.
Favourite game?
Jessie loves to play tip with her big brother
Josh. Her favourite board game is a game
called Zingo (picture bingo).
Favourite activity?
She has just gone back to swimming and
the smile on her face is the most heartwarming
thing. She's a big girl now and no
longer needs mum in the pool. She is so full
of confidence and character and life. After
seeing her little legs going 100 miles an hour,
Jessie B Burton is gonna be the next
Madame Butterfly. She also likes to play
tennis with Pop and doesn't hit a bad
ball for a child with one eye – her hand
eye coordination is really amazing!
More treasured dream?
I would have to say definitely to become
a dancer, although I'm not too sure if she'll
be a ballerina or a hip hopper yet, but
she does have some moves. She loves to
dress up and dance with dad.

World’s Most Expensive Pizza
Raises $1,850
On Monday the 17th of August, Stella Italian Kitchen in Collaroy auctioned off the world’s
most expensive pizza, with all proceeds going to Cure Our Kids. Bidding at the packed house
was hotly contested, but finally this gourmet delight was sold for $1,850, making it Australia’s
most expensive pizza.
Comprising of highly sought after shaved Australian truffle, porcini mushrooms, authentic
Italian pork sausage and buffalo mozzarella, the pizza was cooked fresh at the auction and
served to the highest bidder – Sue Grant.
A huge thank you to Nick Salermo and his team at Stella Italian Kitchen, as well as Sue Grant.
The Pittwater House
Crazy Hair Day
On Thursday the 6th of August, The Pittwater House
Schools welcomed Cure Our Kids to their annual
Athletics Carnival where we held a ‘Crazy Hair for a
Gold Coin Donation’ stand. The sporty students had
their hair sprayed with their house colours - red, blue,
green, yellow and white. The girls had ribbon tied into
their hair, and the boys sported very cool Mohawks!
The students raised over $700 for Cure Our Kids – thank
you to everyone involved.
Painting
Auctioned for
Cure Our Kids
The 500 strong crowd at the opening of the
Sydney City Marine were privy to a spectacle
when they gathered on Thursday 30th July.
Courtesy of the talents of local artist, Brad
Blaze, a blank canvas transformed into a
vibrant cityscape of the Sydney harbour right
before their eyes, in only a matter of minutes.
The painting then went under the hammer
to Dean Leigh-Smith from Gold Coast City
Marina for $2,500, with all proceeds going to
Cure Our Kids.

Walking For Scotty
In honour of their friend, Scott Darley,
who tragically lost his life last October, the
Walking for Scotty team topped the charts
raising a mammoth $22,445 for Cure Our
Kids at this year’s City2Surf.
“I’m not sure exactly how,” Scott Darley
had said to his mother after attending
Bailey’s Dinner in aid of Cure Our Kids,
where he’d first heard about the work of our
charity, “but I really want to do something
to help Cure Our Kids.” The very next week,
the young speedway racer’s life came
to a tragic end when his car crashed at
Parramatta City Raceway.
To honour Scott’s wish to make a difference
to the lives of families confronting childhood
cancer, his friends and family have since
given generously in his memory, and rallied
the support of the wider community. Their
fundraising efforts for the City2Surf brings
the total amount raised for Cure Our Kids
in Scott’s memory
to $49,331.
One of Scott’s best mates, Stu McCarthy
was the organiser behind the Walking for
Scotty team, AKA “Scotty’s Squad”.
“We started fundraising in June,” Stu says,
“we’ve raised support through our friends
and family, as well as the speedway
community. It’s been a great way to give
back, and to get fit and have fun in the
process. It was awesome doing the walk on
the day with the whole Cure Our Kids team,
everywhere you looked there were purple
caps and orange T-Shirts – Scott would
have loved it!”
CICSO Kids
When CISCO set out to do the City2Surf as
part of a teambuilding exercise, little did
they realise their efforts would culminate in
a tremendous $20,010 for Cure Our Kids!
“The idea to do the City2Surf came
about because we were looking for a
teambuilding activity,” says Cisco’s Anne
de Brito. “Our CSR Coordinator Samantha
Birmingham had a connection with Cure
Our Kids, so when she told us about the
charity’s work and suggested we do the
fun run in their aid, we all agreed it was the
perfect option.”
Initially, the Cisco Kids team comprised
exclusively of members of the evolving
team, but soon word got around the
company and staff from all areas wanted
to get involved. In the end, a total of 84
people from all divisions of Cisco raised
funds and slogged out the 14 kilometres for
Cure Our Kids.

“It was a great way for people from
different parts of the company
to get to know each other,” Anne
says. “One of the great things that
came out of this was that as well as
spreading awareness about Cure
Our Kids, it also sent the message
that as a team, we can achieve
amazing things together.”
The Cisco Kids team raised a very impressive
$20,010 for Cure Our Kids, helping us top our
goal. Thanks guys!
The Cannocks’ Story
On the first of January this year, young
Levi Cannock was diagnosed with acute
lymphoblastic leukaemia. Only two and
half years old at the time, Levi showed
a tremendous amount of courage as he
endured 29 arduous days in hospital. Since
this time he has continued to bravely face
chemotherapy, while his parents, Nathan
and Kylie, have dedicated every spare
minute to raising support for the Cure Our
Kids City2Surf team.
The family raised an impressive $4,756 from
friends and family as well as the broader
community. Kylie’s mother, Sue, held a
cake stall at her work, which raised over a
thousand dollars. Nathan, who works as a
sales representative, even put the word out
to customers, many of whom got behind
him with a donation.
When the event day finally arrived Nathan
gave his all and combated the steep and
winding route in an impressive 92 minutes!
But Nathan and Kylie’s greatest reward
is still to come – at the end of this month,
just three days before Levi’s third birthday,
their son will have his central line removed
marking the end of intravenous chemo.
To thank friends and family for their support
and to give them greater insight into the
importance of their donation, Nathan and
Kylie have given all their sponsors a specially
made DVD with footage of Levi’s journey
with cancer.
Cure Our Kids would like to thank the
Cannock family for their tremendous efforts
and for sharing their story.

Regional Support for the Woods Family
When the Woods family put out the word that they were doing the City2Surf, the
response from the local Forbes and Australian Wool community was amazing.
More than 50 people headed straight to the website to make an online donation,
amounting to $5,340 for Cure Our Kids.
The Woods family live in Forbes in central
NSW, where Rowan operates a wool
broking business, and Suzanne is an
Ultrasonographer at the local hospital. On
the 3rd of November last year, their lives
were turned upside down when their then
12 year old daughter, Eliza, was diagnosed
with acute myelogenous leukaemia. On
the 6th of March this year, following several
bouts of intensive chemotherapy, Eliza
underwent a successful bone marrow
transplant, with the donor (Eliza’s older sister,
Aimee) proving a perfect tissue match.
After speaking with Cure Our Kids CEO,
Carolyn Dodds, at the hospital in early
April of this year, Eliza’s father Rowan
decided to register for this year’s City2Surf.
Rowan’s wife Suzanne, and their two eldest
daughters Kristen & Aimee, followed suit,
and the family quickly put the word out
to their friends and family, as well as their
business contacts. It wasn’t long before the
donations began pouring in – even from
their competitors in the wool industry!
“We had always wanted to do the
City2Surf,” Rowan says “but now we had a
new and very compelling reason to do so”.
“It was a fantastic experience,” Rowan adds,
“it was so inspiring to be part of the biggest
fundraising team – I can’t wait to do it again
next year. Next year we hope to have our
entire family, including Eliza, as part of the
team. Our son Rhys had work commitments
this year, and our youngest daughter,
Georgia was on a school excursion!”
Having just turned 13 on August 17th, Eliza is
recovering well at home. She looks forward
to resuming school in term four, after the
October school holidays.
Thanks to the Woods family for their
tremendous efforts – we look forward to their
participation again next year!
