Walking For Scotty
In honour of their friend, Scott Darley,
who tragically lost his life last October, the
Walking for Scotty team topped the charts
raising a mammoth $22,445 for Cure Our
Kids at this year’s City2Surf.
“I’m not sure exactly how,” Scott Darley
had said to his mother after attending
Bailey’s Dinner in aid of Cure Our Kids,
where he’d first heard about the work of our
charity, “but I really want to do something
to help Cure Our Kids.” The very next week,
the young speedway racer’s life came
to a tragic end when his car crashed at
Parramatta City Raceway.
To honour Scott’s wish to make a difference
to the lives of families confronting childhood
cancer, his friends and family have since
given generously in his memory, and rallied
the support of the wider community. Their
fundraising efforts for the City2Surf brings
the total amount raised for Cure Our Kids
in Scott’s memory
to $49,331.
One of Scott’s best mates, Stu McCarthy
was the organiser behind the Walking for
Scotty team, AKA “Scotty’s Squad”.
“We started fundraising in June,” Stu says,
“we’ve raised support through our friends
and family, as well as the speedway
community. It’s been a great way to give
back, and to get fit and have fun in the
process. It was awesome doing the walk on
the day with the whole Cure Our Kids team,
everywhere you looked there were purple
caps and orange T-Shirts – Scott would
have loved it!”
CICSO Kids
When CISCO set out to do the City2Surf as
part of a teambuilding exercise, little did
they realise their efforts would culminate in
a tremendous $20,010 for Cure Our Kids!
“The idea to do the City2Surf came
about because we were looking for a
teambuilding activity,” says Cisco’s Anne
de Brito. “Our CSR Coordinator Samantha
Birmingham had a connection with Cure
Our Kids, so when she told us about the
charity’s work and suggested we do the
fun run in their aid, we all agreed it was the
perfect option.”
Initially, the Cisco Kids team comprised
exclusively of members of the evolving
team, but soon word got around the
company and staff from all areas wanted
to get involved. In the end, a total of 84
people from all divisions of Cisco raised
funds and slogged out the 14 kilometres for
Cure Our Kids.
