Prince Edward Island
4025K Interesting early letter dated Charlotte Town
20 November 1817, cancelled 3 December 1817
sent to Great Britain. Paid to Halifax (8d
in red manuscript). A further 1 Sh 4 d paid
(Stg.) indicated by the same red pen. This
would have paid the full postage to the
original destination of Bath. 6+2=8d for
private ship letter and 8d for the inland
distance Portsmouth–Bath. However the cover
has been redirected to London and then to
Southampton. Several postage due notes incl.
1/1 which has been deleted by an inspector’s
crown and the final note of 2 Sh 10 d. Remains
for the buyer to decode the remaining due
notes! Exceptional exhibition item! (Photo) * 2.500:-
4026K Single rate letter sent from Charlotte Town
1 May 1820 to London, Great Britain. Note
”Pd to Halifax 8” to show that the postage
to Halifax, N.S. was pre-paid. Manuscript
due mark of 2 Sh 2 d in black made to account
for the 11 d inland postage Falmouth to London
and the 1 Sh 3 d packet rate Halifax–Falmouth.
4027P Double rate to Great Britain, London cancelled
(Charlotte Town) 1 August 1820 paid to Halifax
1 Sh 4 d. Packet rate Halifax–Falmouth 2 Sh
6 d and inland postage to London a further
1 Sh 10 d making a total of 4 Sh 4 d postage
due. There has been some confusion as to
whether this was a triple rate item or not,
an inspector’s crown has deleted a 4/4 marking
and 6/6 has been written – but then the 6/6
has been deleted and 4/4 in red shows that
4/4 was what indeed was paid. Interesting
high rate exhibition item! (Photo) * 1.500:-
4028P Letter rated as single rate dated Charlotte
Town 2 August 1821 sent to London, UK. Pre-
paid to Halifax 8d (red manuscript). Then 1
Sh 3 d rate Halifax-Falmouth and 11 d inland
UK postage to London making a total of 2 Sh
2 d. However an inspector’s crown has been
applied and the letter has been re-rated as
double rate to 4 Sh 4 d because it contained
a ’life certificate’ which was considered an
extra letter sheet. (Photo) * 1.500:-
4029P Single rate letter from Charlotte Town to
Halifax, Nova Scotia dated 15 February 1824.
Obliterated with circular Prince Edward Island
cancellation with year in italics. Few examples
known. The rate consists of 8 d Charlotte
Town-Halifax and 1 d for local delivery within
Halifax, accounting for black manuscript
marks 8, 1 and 9. (Photo) * 1.500:-
4030P Single rate letter dated Cascumpec 25 June
1825 sent via Charlotte Town to Exmouth,
Great Britain. Paid to Halifax (8 d). Packet
rate 1 Sh 3 d Halifax–Falmouth and inland
postage 8 d as it was not routed via London.
Unusual exhibition item! (Photo) * 2.000:-
4031P Single rate letter sent from Charlotte Town
17 October 1826 to London, Great Britain.
Circular PAID and red manuscript 8 to show
that the postage of 8 d to Halifax was paid.
Postage due mark of 2 Sh 2 d in black made
to account for the 11 d inland postage Falmouth
to London and the 1 Sh 3 d packet rate Halifax–
Falmouth. (Photo) * 1.000:-
4032P Letter of first rate dated Bedeque 16 November
1831 addressed to Luss, Great Britain. A
postage due note of 1 Sh 3 d has been cancelled
and changed to 1 Sh 4 d. The rate consists
of 8 d for private ship mail, 7 d from Greenock
to Dumbarton and a further 1 d for local
delivery further to Luss. Presumably the
first postage due note missed that it was
travelling further from Dumbarton. Furthermore
a Scottish ”Add ½ ” strike for Scottish
carriage tax. Private ship letters to and
from Prince Edward Island are rare – interesting
exhibition item! (Photo) * 1.500:-
4033P Single rate letter from Charlotte Town to
Arisaig, Nova Scotia dated 27 August 1833.
Obliterated with Prince Edward Island handstamp
type 2. The rate consists of 4½ d Charlotte
Town-port (ship letter rate) and 2 d for
internal delivery within Nova Scotia, accounting
for black manuscript marks 4½, 2 and 6½. (Photo) * 1.000:-
4034P Single rate letter to Nova Scotia, dated
Charlotte Town 26 Marche 1834. Standard
interprovincial rate of 8 d paid by the
receiver (black manuscript mark). (Photo) * 800:-
4035P Single rate letter dated Charlotte Town 5 July
1834 sent to London via Liverpool. Postage
due marking of 1 Sh 7 d as a result of 8 d
private ship letter rate and 11 d inland
postage Liverpool–London. (Photo) * 1.200:
