By Bus
All buses arrive at Yevpatoriya’s bus station (автовокзал). The station is
small, clean and neat. It is located just next to the train station in the heart of
the city. A currency exchange office (обмен валют) and an ATM (банкомат)
can be found at the train station. Taxis are always on hand and can take you to
most destinations for 20Hr to 40Hr. There are local mini buses (marsrutkas)
that pass by and go to several destinations. One can also get a bus to the
Kazantip Festival when it is on in August. Tram N°1 is probably the shortest
street car line in the world going only 3 stops. It does, however connect one
to another cross-town tram line and brings one nearly to the sea.
By Train
The refurbished Railway Station (вокзал) is located in the heart of the
city and shares its territory with the bus station. Currency exchange (обмен
валют) points and ATMs (банкомат) are nearby. Taxis are always on hand
and can take you to most destinations for 20Hr to 40Hr. There are local
mini buses (marsrutkas) that pass by and go to several destinations. Tram
N°1 is probably the shortest street car line in the world going only 3 stops.
It does, however connect one to another cross-town tram line and brings
one nearly to the sea. Most of train connections operate only in the “high
season”, from the beginning of June until the end of September. (The exact
dates change each year.)
The exception is the electric train (eletrichka). This runs every few hours to
Simferopol and is very inexpensive. The seats are hard and it takes about
3 hours.
By Plane
Simferopol State International caters to both international and domestic
flights in the Crimea. Located about 20km west of Simferopol, it is a small
but kind of modern facility. Passport and customs officials should speak
English. You will find currency exchange offices (обмен валют) and an ATM
(банкомат). It is possible to get a taxi for the 1 hour ride for anywhere
from 150Hr and upwards. It’s a good chance to practice your negotiating
skills. For the budget traveller, buses leave roughly every 30 minutes to
the Simferopol railway station. There is also a trolley bus which takes a
lot long but costs next to nothing. From the railway, follow our instructions
for a bus to Yevpatoriya. (Note: if you take a bus to the railway station and
then another bus to Yevpatoriya, you may notice that the bus passes by
the airport. These buses are always full so trying to walk to the highway
and stopping one going to Yevpatoriya is nearly impossible. However, when
returning to the airport from Yevpatoriya, one can buy a ticket to the railway
station and disembark at the airport turnoff saving much time. It’s about a
15 minute walk.) There are several car rental agencies at the airport with
fairly good rates.
By Sea
We found that there is one ferry service that runs between Yevpatoriya and Istanbul.
It travels each way once a week in the summer season. This should be
booked through a travel agent or by the Yevpatoriya tourist information centre.
at the Central Railway Station (центральний вокзал) in Simferopol. From
here one can take a taxi to Yevpatoriya for around 150-200Hr. There is a bus
station right in front of the railway station. From here there are buses every
15-30 minutes to Yevpatoriya. (In the high season every 5-10 minutes.) Be
sure to allow 10-20 minutes or longer buying your ticket at the “kassa”. It can
be a real battle in the busy times. Tickets cost about 20Hr. The ride takes
about an hour and 15 minutes or longer depending on traffic.
Alcohol
Ukrainian beer (pyvo) is quite tasty and extremely cheap to boot. Tipsiness
may set in early, though, as its alcohol content is higher than Western brands.
Those preferring foreign brands can find their favourites at finer shops and
establishments. Ukraine also produces a wide selection of vodka, which flows
freely at many parties and gatherings. Beware if offered homemade vodka
(samohon). While good samohon can be better than some bootleg labels in
shops, the overall odds are against you and your stomach. Whether it’s Ukrainian
vodka or moonshine, be ready to offer a toast at some point. A modest ’cheers’
(bud’mo) will do for a foreigner.
Language
The country’s official language is Ukrainian. Since independence in 1991,
it has become much more popular and widespread. Still, Russian is heavily
used in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, and only in western regions is Ukrainian
truly predominant.
Money
The national currency is the hryvnia (Hr), which replaced the transitional karbovanets
on September 2, 1996. Don’t be confused if your amount is given in roubles. You
haven’t been transported to Russia or taken back in time to the USSR - some people
just have trouble letting go of the past! Paper bills carry denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10,
50, 100, 200 and 500 hryvnias. Another word to the wise: two versions exist of the
1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 hryvnia bills, and both are accepted everywhere.
There are 100 kopecks in a hryvnia, with 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopeck and 1Hr coins.
You’ll have no problem finding currency exchange points, but rates are better
from central street kiosks. If it’s traveller’s checks you need to cash, look for a big
respectable-looking bank. You can find a number of ATMs around Yevpatoria and
many hotels and restaurants now take Visa and MasterCard - American Express is
not very popular. There have been scattered reports of credit card fraud in upscale
restaurants, though, so you may want to think twice before charging it.
Safety
They say that Ukrainians can spot a foreigner from a kilometre away. This fact
alone will not automatically make you the target of crime. Yevpatoria is, in fact,
a rather safe place. As in most cities, flashing large amounts of cash can cause
trouble. Wallets are known to disappear in public transport crowds, so guard
your pockets at all times. Being very drunk and/or loud on the street is always
a good way to attract unwanted attention, especially from the police. By the
way, it’s a good idea for foreigners to carry at least a copy of their passport
and visa with them at all times.
Smoking
You’re never too far away from a lit cigarette in Ukraine, and in some bars and
clubs the term second-hand smoke just doesn’t seem to matter. Smokers
enjoy a ridiculously cheap selection of cigarettes hawked by one of the many
babushkas and corner kiosks that are located throughout the city. Just recently
Ukraine outlawed smoking in most public places and the workplace, except in
specially designated areas. It is the responsibility of each company to provide
a designated area for all smoking patrons or personnel. These special places
can not exceed 50% of the total allotted area of the business. Since this law is
relatively new in Ukraine, not every business has begun to enforce it.
modern pension is only 100 meters from the sea and has a large heated pool
surrounded by exquisitely landscaped gardens. The restaurant offers Russian,
European, and seafood dishes. We are not sure if the pension is open in the off
season as the staff seemed to have no interest in being in this publication, and
couldn‘t be bothered to answer any questions. Still, it looks like a nice place.
Q23 rooms (1 single 170 - 400Hr, 8 doubles 200 - 620Hr, 6 triples 220 - 780Hr,
Apartments
Yevpatoriya Apartments tel. (+380) 50 331 50 28, val@ciac.biz. Lo-
cated throughout Yevpatoriya are several modern and luxurious apartments. In
addition there are some complete houses that can be rented whole or by the
room. The operation is run by Val, an Australian of Russian decent. He is also
available as a translator/guide and does excursions not just in the Yevpatoriya
area, but all of Crimea including visits to the very little known “lost cities‘ of
Crimea. Give him a call; it will be well worth your effort!
Yevpatoriya is one of the most ancient cities on the territory of
Ukraine, with a history dating back more than 25 centuries. We will
try our best to summarize the fascinating history of a place where
nomadic tribes once fought and the servants of the Crimean khans
raced with urgent messages...
Kerkinitida is the most ancient name of Yevpatoriya. In the 4th century
BC Greeks from Miletus came on the shore of the modern territory of
Yevpatoriya. Presumably, one of the leaders in the new settlement
was someone called Karkin, after whom the settlement was named.
The name was later changed to Kerkinitida. Hecataeus of Miletus,
Herodotus, Pliny, and Mela mentioned Kerkinitida in their works.
The second name of the city was received from the Tartars. In 13th
century, late at night on the shore of the Kalamitskiy Bay the Tartar
horsemen appeared. They saw lights in the windows of the houses
that appeared to them as huge eyes, winking pleasantly to tired
riders. One of the Tartar horsemen cried out: “Gez”, which means
“an eye” and another added “ev” that means “a house”. So the city
was then known as Gezlev.
The present day name came from the Greeks again. During the winter
of 108-107 BC, Diophantus defeated the army of the Scythian king
Palak and entrenched his army in North-Western Crimea. To gain
control over this part of Crimea, Diophantus built a fortress and
named it in honor of Mithridates, Yevpator.
Nowadays, Yevpatpriya is well known for its beaches, which are
famous for clean and soft golden sand, clear clean water and a
gently sloping bottom.
Two Yevpatoriya beaches even received an international certificate
of quality “Blue Flag” and became the first in Ukraine to receive this
quality certificate.
The city lives its own special, sunny life, waking at night to open-air
restaurants, bars, and falling asleep in the morning on the golden
sand. After the high season period, open-air venues shut down
and long autumn with rains and storms begins. Sometimes winter
comes into the city. But mostly spring comes right after autumn, and
primroses bloom in December. Yevpatorians again put in order the
beaches and cafes and are looking forward to meeting and welcoming
the new hot summer and flocking tourists.
in cute traditional costumes. The décor is “rustic Ukrainian”. There is a special
breakfast menu served from 10:00-12:00 for Hr.45 which we found quite satisfy-
ing. There is also a Business Lunch from 12:00-16:00 for just Hr.45. The regular
the Russian and Soviet modernist poet of the same name. Some artefacts
and paintings of her are still there. In a way, the café is a shrine to her and her
poetry which have touched the lives of countless people around the world. The
café offers a wide assortment of desserts, salads, and main courses. There is
a wide assortment of tea for all tastes. There is a good selection of coffee and
an excellent wine list. The decor and atmosphere is reminiscent of the 1920‘s
and 30‘s with instrumental arrangements of songs from old popular films. There
is often live piano music from 19:00. There are sometimes literary evenings and
39 00. Centrally located just across the street from the park and waterfront.
The 1st room is of a “jazz décor”. It is bright and sunny and there are photos of
jazz musicians (from Chicago?) from the 30‘s and 40‘s There are several musi-
cal instruments on the wall. This room seats 32. The 2nd room is the “gangster
room” with photos of real and “Hollywood” villains on the walls. On each table is a
unique photo montage, a kind of “picture history” of life in the states in the 30‘s &
40‘s.This room seats 22. We eventually found a wide selection of salads, pasta,
and pizza. There is no English menu and no attempt was made to help us. After
deciding on Spaghetti Carbonara, (something we and the server understood),
we were told it would take at least 40 minutes. So we settled on a Greek salad &
the four season pizza. We thought we were playing it safe. The salad came with
vinegar on it, and the pizza had shellfish, two items we never order. The quality
was excellent and though a bit pricy for Evpatoria, it is well worth it- for those who
like vinegar and shellfish. QOpen 10:00 - 23:00. VNGSW
with games for children. At 22:00 it becomes a disco/night club sometimes
with go-go girls and a strip show. The staff is very pleasant and speaks English.
There is a very unique picture menu. At first glance we thought “Oh no-not sushi
again”. It turned out to be various Ukrainian salads dressed like sushi. There are
oodles of pizza to choose from, and cooked in a real stone pizza oven! We tried
the chicken pizza for 70Hr. and really enjoyed it. Another surprise is the movie
theatre/restaurant. Current action thrillers are shown (Russian sound track) and
anyone can watch-as long as a meal is ordered. The theater holds about a dozen
with comfy chairs and tables. QOpen 10:00 - 06:00. PA6VGSW
This restaurant with its hospitality, food, and ethnic culture: is typical of the people of
the East. Here you will touch the gastronomic culture, taste and cuisine of the Crimean
Tatar. The decor is quite stunning. The staff wears traditional Tatar dress, are very
friendly and speak some English. While there is no English menu, there is a picture
menu of each item served. The server matches your picture to the Russian menu,
and presto-your order is taken. The prices are very reasonable with all sorts of unique
soups and salads for starters costing between 20Hr.-45Hr. It was so hard to choose
the main dish as there are many exotic dishes available. Not being nomads ourselves,
we passed on the horse dish. We settled on the “lamb ribs with dried apricots stewed
with vegetables “It was 80Hr. and very tasty and filling.During the summer season,
restaurant culinary tours are conducted. While we were there a TV cooking show
was taking place during our meal. QOpen 10:00 - 24:00. PTUIGBXS
try dishes of the Crimean Karaites. Such specialties are; cold buza the sourish-
sweet drink prepared from millet and wheat flour, and yantiki which are pies similar
to chebureks, fried without oil. There is also roast mutton and other unique dishes.
It is very comfortable, and there is an outside summer terrace. We have found it
a nice place to spend bleak winter afternoons eating pastries and drinking tea.
Koreiskiy Dvorik D-3, Kirova 7A, tel. (+380) 6569 2 46 59. This café is
well-known for its traditional Korean cuisine. The staff is very friendly yet it was
difficult to communicate as there is no English menu. That can all be overlooked as
one realizes that the chef is actually Korean. This is a simple Ukrainian restaurant
with Ukrainian and Korean cuisine. The prices are very affordable considering
that one is getting “the real thing”. There is a lovely outside terrace in the warm
seasons. QOpen 09:00 - 22:00.
recent past - the era of the Soviet Union. There are colorful posters, lamps, and
icons on the walls. The DJ mixer is designed as a large radio and the walls have
famous actors and celebrities. The waitresses dress as schoolgirls-pionerok and
guide you to the table. Each evening the show begins at 19.30. The program is a
fascinating sound of the saxophone and guitar, hot dances, and the performances
of an erotic dance duo. .During breaks you can dance or just listen to the music.
From 23.00, admission to the disco is free. Every weekend from 11.00 to 13.00
is a children‘s theatrical performance. Happy and funny clowns hold contests,
arrange fun relays and tell riddles. The audience is actively involved and get
designed in the form of the mess-room of the submarine Natulis from Jules Verne‘s
famous novel “Twenty Thousand Leauges Under the Sea”. At the entrance we
were met by Captain Nemo. It is a beautifully decorated hall seating 40 guests
comfortably. In the dining room one finds the largest aquarium in Ukraine (12 tons)
which is filled with many species of tropical fish. Chef Alex Plakushkin guarantee s a
reat culinary experience from his original seafood menu. Prices were above average
but certainly well worth it. There is now a 20% discount on meals Monday -Friday
TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRES
IN CRIMEA
The health resorts in Yevpatoria are unique. They were built in the time of the
USSR and area now owned by various Ukrainian ministries such as the tax
department, ministry of agriculture, ministry of defence, etc. Until recently these
sanatoriums have remained closed to the general public. They are now opening
their doors and bookings may be made through certain travel agencies as well
as the Tourist information in Yevpatoria. All these sanatoriums listed have a long
reputation of catering to various illnesses and diseases. They employ special
mud and other treatments, some found nowhere else. The medical-rehabilitation
programs are made individually, taking into account the basic diagnosis, age,
region of residing, a functional condition of an organism and according to the
confirmed standards of sanatorium treatment. The priority is given to use of
natural physical factors: special sulfide, mud, brine from Mojnaksky lake, and
chloride mineral water. They may vary in the treatments that they specialize in
and offer, but most of them cater to a long list of aliments and illnesses. It would
be wise to check with ones doctor in choosing one! It should also be noted that
they are not used to foreigners and speak only Russian and have virtually no
information in any other language. The daily routine including meals is basically
of the old Soviet style. Considering all this, it is still a great deal when one is
looking for very special and affordable treatment.
is a huge record on the wall. The bar is in the back of a fire truck parked in the
building. (Or the building was built around the fire truck?) The place is smartly
decorated with booths in a semi circle around the small dance floor and stage.
The menu was only in Russian but the servers were fluent in English and it was
no problem. We had a lovely steak with home potatoes which was really tasty
and just 45Hr per 100 grams. Finally the music started and I was so excited. It
was a Saturday night, and there were Sveta & Igor singing old Russian & English
pop songs messing up the English lyrics. The jazz, I was told, was every so
