It’s been one year since the<br />
Stelter-Fisher Transitional<br />
Care Unit opened, and the<br />
lives of 29 children have<br />
been changed because of it.<br />
The TCU, as we call it,<br />
is designed to help children<br />
recovering from injury or<br />
illness transition from<br />
hospital to home. <strong>ChildServe</strong><br />
currently has the only<br />
transitional care unit in Iowa<br />
that specializes in pediatrics. From<br />
therapy sessions in the pool, therapy<br />
gym or child-friendly treatment rooms<br />
to playing video games or relaxing in<br />
the teen room, each activity provides<br />
opportunities for growth and<br />
development. Sometimes the children<br />
don’t even realize they’re doing the<br />
hard work of recovering!<br />
<strong>ChildServe</strong> also focuses on the<br />
families of the children in the TCU,<br />
many of whom are going through<br />
times of crisis. Medical social workers<br />
are readily available to support families,<br />
and we have a comprehensive<br />
educational program to prepare<br />
families to care for children so they<br />
are equipped to meet their needs after<br />
they return home.<br />

Throughout the first year, we’ve<br />
learned a great deal that allows us to<br />
continuously improve our practices.<br />

to work in all areas: the TCU,<br />
Continuing Care Unit, and Homecare.<br />

For kids, summertime means<br />
swimming, biking, camping and…<br />
volunteering to help kids with<br />
special health care needs? That’s<br />
exactly what it means to many<br />
young volunteers at <strong>ChildServe</strong>.<br />
Kaylene Steele, volunteer<br />
coordinator, estimates that more<br />
than half of all of the volunteers<br />
for <strong>ChildServe</strong> are school-aged, so<br />
summer is a great time for them<br />
to volunteer.<br />
Finn McNally, who will be a thirdgrader<br />
this fall, has been volunteering<br />
once a week for the last three summers.<br />
He and his mother come to read stories<br />
to the children in the Continuing<br />
Care Unit. “I love to read stories<br />
that make the kids laugh,” Finn<br />
says. When it came time for his last<br />
birthday party, Finn invited 15 friends<br />
to go bowling. Instead of receiving<br />
birthday presents, Finn asked each<br />
child to bring a book to be donated<br />
to <strong>ChildServe</strong>. In addition, he spent<br />
nearly $50 of his own money to buy<br />
books to donate to <strong>ChildServe</strong>’s<br />
library.<br />

Brandon Mees of Ankeny found<br />
another way to help children at<br />
<strong>ChildServe</strong> live great lives. After he<br />
turned 13 years old, he felt that he<br />
had outgrown his puppet collection.<br />
He decided to donate the entire<br />
collection of eight puppets and a<br />
puppet theater to <strong>ChildServe</strong>. Now,<br />
the puppets are used by the child life<br />
specialists, recreational therapists,<br />
speech therapists and nurses<br />
throughout <strong>ChildServe</strong>.<br />

A Transitional Care Unit Success Story<br />
FFrom the moment he was admitted to<br />
the Transitional Care Unit soon after<br />
it opened, Cayden’s bright blue eyes<br />
melted the hearts of everyone at<br />
<strong>ChildServe</strong>.<br />
At first, he couldn’t move very<br />
much. It was only a few weeks after<br />
the horrible car accident that claimed<br />
the life of his mother and very nearly<br />
his own. The majority of his twoyear-old<br />
body was supported by casts<br />
and medical equipment. But already,<br />
he had learned how to smile again.<br />
In the next six months, Cayden’s<br />
spirit shone through as he soldiered<br />
through physical therapy,<br />
occupational therapy, speech therapy<br />
and medical treatments every day. But<br />
the milestones came quickly, and soon<br />
he said “Papa,” his name for his<br />
grandfather, who was his constant<br />
companion. Then he began to stand<br />
with assistance and finally took steps<br />
on his own. He celebrated his third<br />
birthday with his family and nearly<br />
50 <strong>ChildServe</strong> staff members in the<br />
cafeteria. One week before his<br />
discharge, he walked into the cafeteria<br />
for the first time, and staff clapped<br />
and cheered him on, some with tears<br />
in their eyes. Cayden went home with<br />
his grandparents in February, but he<br />
continues to work hard at his<br />
recovery through our outpatient<br />
therapy program.<br />
In May, <strong>ChildServe</strong>’s longtime<br />
partner, Variety—The Children’s<br />
Charity, presented Cayden with an<br />
adaptive bike in conjunction with the<br />
Principal Charity Classic golf event.<br />
The bike was just like one that he used<br />
in his recovery at <strong>ChildServe</strong>.<br />
Over the past year, many children<br />
who stayed in the Transitional Care<br />
Unit have achieved similar success. On<br />
behalf of them and the many who will<br />
benefit in the future, thank you to the<br />
community, donors, board members<br />
and staff who helped make the<br />
Transitional Care Unit the special<br />
place it has become.<br />

discharge. This allows for a seamless<br />
transition home.<br />
The TCU has exceeded everyone’s<br />
expectations for growth, and it appears<br />
that the concept of transitional care is<br />
catching on. <strong>ChildServe</strong> has received<br />
referrals from all over the Midwest,<br />
including Mercy Medical Center,<br />
Cayden received a special adaptive<br />
bike from Variety—The Children’s<br />
Charity and the Principal<br />
Charity Classic.<br />

Chicago. <strong>ChildServe</strong> is truly becoming<br />
a regional facility, and it has been our<br />
pleasure to share what we’ve learned<br />
with other organizations.<br />

As a Wal-Mart greeter, Marnie<br />
Bigelow meets everyone at the door<br />
with a smile—it’s her job. But that<br />
smile extends far beyond the doors<br />
of Wal-Mart and has touched the<br />
lives of many kids at <strong>ChildServe</strong>.<br />
Marnie started volunteering at the<br />
Ames <strong>ChildServe</strong> Center about six<br />
years ago. “She always comes with<br />
a smile and is willing to do what is<br />
asked,” says Julie Remsburg, skill<br />
development specialist. “It doesn’t<br />
take long for Marnie to warm up to<br />
the children. I know many kids that<br />
look forward to her visits. I can sense<br />
the excitement.”<br />
“Getting to be with the kids and see<br />
them have fun is the most rewarding<br />
part of volunteering,” Marnie says.<br />
“I have seen the growth in many of<br />
them over time. I believe that I bring<br />
happiness to the kids when I come.”<br />
Marnie brings more than just her<br />
smile when traveling from work to<br />
<strong>ChildServe</strong>. Thanks to Wal-Mart’s<br />
corporate giving program, she is able<br />

Tee Off at the Golf FORE! the Kids<br />
Tournament on September 15<br />
The 15th Annual Golf FORE! the Kids is scheduled for September 15 at the<br />
Echo Valley Country Club in Norwalk, and there’s still time to register. The<br />
entry fee is $150 to enjoy a 1 p.m. shotgun-start best-shot tournament, lunch,<br />
social hour and raffle.<br />
