Fietstocht
Het verre postkantoor was de magneet.
Niet om de luchtpostzegels of de taal
Van overzeese stempels – nee, het deed
Op tweehoog ’s middags dienst als jeugdleeszaal.
Tweemaal, op dinsdag en donderdag,
Verdween ik in het ruime trapportaal
En kwam weer buiten met een brede lach.
Ik had mijn voorraad boeken andermaal.
Met in mijn hoofd een eerste regel die
Ik vluchtig had gezien bij een verhaal
Werd, fietsend, al naar het vervolg gegist.
Toch geselde ik vervaarlijk het pedaal
Om sneller thuis te zijn, omdat ik wist:
Het boek is beter dan de fantasie.

On my bicycle I guessed how the story would end
I cycled fast to be home as soon as possible
To read the book even better than my fantasy
Gerrit Komrij (born 30 March 1944 in Winterswijk, Gelderland) is a Dutch poet,
novelist, translator, critic, polemic journalist and playwright. From 2000 to 2004 he
was the Dutch Dichter des Vaderlands (Poet Laureate).
This poem, by Komrij, tells us how much the poet loves books. In the seventies poets
began to write about feelings and traditions. Poets from that period are: Ida Gerhardt,
Vasalis, Leopold and Gerrit Komrij.
