Jackson Hole, Wyoming
LOOKING BACK AT
JACKSON HOLE
By Jim Morris
The Jackson Hole trip started out
great for me when my neighbor Kati
Galiszuski, who seldom passes up an
opportunity to harass me (all in good
fun I hope), offered me a ride to the
airport and back.
When we got to the airport we
learned that our plane had
“allegedly’ dropped a part off the
engine on the way in so we were split
into two groups and rerouted
through Chicago. When we got to
Chicago I had to leave the secure
area to talk with a United
representative to confirm our flight
to Jackson. I was then refused
reentry since I didn’t have a
boarding pass. After some tense
discussions we were finally
permitted to board our flight to
Jackson. Our luggage arrived
Saturday in several stages and we
were ready to start a fantastic week
of skiing and forget all the airline
difficulties.
We started the week with forecasts
for lots of snow and we were not
disappointed. By the end of the week
54 inches of new snow had fallen. But
somehow, even with all that snow the
visibility was not too bad. Some of
the runs were a challenge with up to
a foot or more of deep snow but I
only heard happy remarks such as,
“this is the best snow conditions I
have ever seen”. Dare devil Beth
Eilers skied off the top of a big
boulder. She may have been trying to
out ski Bruce Cunningham who was
doing headers down Dick’s Ditch.
Janice and Russ Wortham as well as
Beth and Bruce waited 45 minutes
for 3 guys to ski down Corbets
Couloir. Although Russ captured it
all on film I don’t think anyone from
our club took the leap into Jackson
Hole’s most infamous and dangerous
run. Several of our skiers reported
seeing a moose walking down the ski
slope.
At the end of our first day of skiing
we met our new friends from the
Brandywine Ski Club at the Mangy
Moose. Since the Fall Line trip was
full, four of our club members had
decided to travel with them. Then on
Tuesday, Jackson Hole invited us to a
club appreciation wine and cheese
party.
Our club members normally like
ski in – ski out, but Jackson Hole is
one ski area where most of our
members agreed with our lodging
choice of the Wort Hotel
(pronounced Wirt) in Jackson as the
preferred location. It’s right in the
center of town within blocks of many
restaurants, night life and shops. At
the Wort we never had to carry our
bags. The porters delivered them to
the rooms and back to the bus on the
day we left. When we returned from
skiing there was always someone
waiting at the door to store our skis.
Get It With G
Hello everyone,
President’s
Message
I must start off this article by saying “How about
those Steelers”!!! Yes, I am a big Steelers fan and I
love every minute of their victory.
Well, Steamboat was awesome. The snow couldn’t
have been better and some days we skied on
Champagne powder. By the way Sara, you did a great
job as trip leader. I really enjoyed the Hoagie Party
because we had a chance to come together again in
the middle of the week as a group to share stories
about our skiing and hot spring excursion.
Dennis Halterman, Nicole and Jim Daisey met up
to ski with Billy the Kid and our own Winter Trip
Chair, Bill Caden, won a Silver medal in the NASTAR
competition. Go Bill!! If you want more stories you
will have to pry it out of me or read all about it in
Sara’s article. What happens in Steamboat stays in
Steamboat. LOL
Back to business, yes it is getting close to that time
of the year again. As we all know, Mike Gilbert will
Membership Contest
Bring in a New Member and
You Could Win a Fabulous Prize!!
For each NEW paying member you bring into the club, you
are given one chance for the drawings. This must be a new
person who has never before been a member (i.e. no past
members coming back into the club). The person must list your
name on their membership application BEFORE it is submitted.
The contest runs from January to December 2006.
Every two months, prizes will be drawn with the Grand Prize
announced at the annual Holiday Party. Members do not have to be
present to win. The more members you bring in, the greater your
chances are of winning. See membership table for contest rules.
Fall Line is kicking off their 40th year celebration
at this year's Spring Fling on April 22nd.
Don't miss it.
be our incoming President, but we are still in need of
volunteers for President-Elect, Treasurer-Elect,
Secretary and several positions for board members at
large. We are in need of volunteers for these important
positions because this club cannot be run without
them. Each candidate who is interested in becoming a
board member and would like to run for the board
should write an autobiography that will be due by
March 12, 2006. The autobiographies will be published
in the April Newsletter. The Board of Directors makes
a lot of key decisions and if you would like to make a
difference, the only way to do this is to get involved
such as being a board member or a member of our
committiees such as Winter Trip or ABS. Please
contact Mike Gilbert or me if you would like to run for
the board.
In closing, I would just like to remind all the past and
present members that the ski club is celebrating our
40th Anniversary this year and will kick off our
celebration during the Spring Fling. Please contact me
with any ideas to help make our 40th Anniversary a
blast, but be sure to buy your tickets for the Spring
Fling. They are on sale now.
Thanks Steve Beach for becoming a new weekend trip
leader this year. I did not mean to leave your name out of
my article last month.
Happy Birthday Kathy Walgate.
Election Time
Election Time for The Fall Line Board
It’s that time of year! Yes I know everyone is desperately
attempting to stuff that last turtle neck into to their suitcase and
keep it less than 55 pounds, but it’s also time to think about
next year already. Fall Line is a volunteer organization and as
such, will only be as great as we make it. How many times
have you thought, why doesn’t the club do … Well the reason
is simple, it’s because your voice hasn’t been heard yet.
Fall Line is comprised of over 600 people with various skill
sets that range from CEOs to jugglers. I think the variety is
what makes this club so much fun. I was in this club for over
4 years before anyone asked me what I do for a living or
better stated, to afford my living.
The Fall Line Board is comprised of the following standard
offices:
President
President- Elect
President –Ex-Officio
Treasurer
Treasurer-Elect
Secretary
These seem fairly explanatory! The President drinks all
the beer, the President-Elect gets to drink all the beer next
year (that’s me) and the President-Ex-Officio has no beer left,
but allows everyone to buy them beer discussing what a great
year they had. The money is always handled with extreme
care, so there is a Treasurer who keeps track of the money
going-outs and a Treasurer-Elect that keeps track of the
money going-ins. The Secretary, who we have been blessed
with the last several years with the fabulous Nona Luce,
keeps minutes for the meetings and is responsible for the
collection and filing of all documentation.
Then we move onto to the Elected Directors! We have 6
Elected Directors that serve 2 Year Terms (typically 3 new
elected each year) and up to three additional Appointed
Directors that each serve a 1 Year Term.
So what do they do you ask, or you’ve already gone back to
your suitcase. These are the people that Chair the committees
that run our club or just help out all around. The Committees
include:
Winter Trip Chair: Leader of the Village
Summer Trip Chair: Leader of the Village off Snow
Newsletter: Town Crier
Publicity: Web Site, Advertising... Town Screamer
Welcoming: Meet, Greet, and assimilate people into the
club.. Town Socialite
Social Events/Gala Planner: Spring Fling, Christmas Party
Beer Meister: Supplies Beer to all bus trips and Presidents
General Meeting Events: Fashion Show, Safety Talks
Membership: The Fabulous Brad and Robyn often
volunteer for this great task
As you can see, the positions and skill sets needed are
extremely varied. We need a great variety of expertise to run
this club. Please talk to a current board member if you have
any interest in helping to make Fall Line Great next year!
Steamboat Springs
STEAMBOAT COLORADO
By Sara Walls
On January 7th at a very early 5:00 am 42 Fall Liners
started the journey to Steamboat Springs Colorado. I
knew the trip was already off to a great start because not
only was Jody Sandberg the first one to arrive at the bus,
which is a first, but G actually showed up with five whole
minutes to spare, another first. I learned one thing that
morning that may help future trip leaders- always
remember to count yourself - Thanks Jody, little did you
know that this was how you became the “assistant trip
leader”. So after many attempts to insure that everyone
was there, we were ready to go. The day started on the
bus ride to Newark NJ with bagels, home made cookies
(complements of the early Jody), Bloody Marys and a half
gallon of Screw Drivers. It would have been a whole
gallon except poor placement on the shelf sent most of it
spilling down the stairs before we even pulled out of the
parking lot. The bus driver thought that was going to be
the worst of the journey until a half an hour after he left
us at the Newark Airport we made him drive all the way
back because a lap top computer was still in the over
head bin. Actually I think he drove back because I was
in such a hurry to get to Colorado that I forgot to give him
his tip. Money talks every time.
We all arrived at the Hayden Airport and I thought the
worst part was over… well, maybe for most of us, but for
Ralph and Nancy Perrino whose boot bag got lost by the
airline their nightmare was just beginning. Just
remember folks; airlines lose luggage not the people!
The airline tried to be accommodating by giving them a
voucher to rent whatever was still in the bag. Luckily the
bag showed up that night so all was good. If they would
have taken my advice, they would have sold the voucher
and went out to a nice dinner, but no they were honest
since they got their bag.
The week of skiing was awesome. We had a blizzard on
Sunday which produced 11 inches of snow at the top and
nothing to see because of all the fog. We just had to
imagine the awesome views. It snowed again Wednesday
into Thursday with bright blue skies on Tuesday and
Friday. The powder was up to your knees on Monday and
again on Thursday all over the mountain. We were skiing
in true champagne powder. This was what ski dreams are
made of. It was explained to us by a local that the storms
come over the contenintal divide and just bounce between
that & the mountain and that is why Steamboat gets a
tremendous amount of snow during the year. This
mountain truly offers it all with nice groomed runs, bump
runs, tree runs, and even a hike to a section that will surely
put you in places where not many people will be skiing.
“Morning Side” was a favorite with great tree runs for
almost every skiing level. I am not sure if Gene Zaleswki
was joking or not but, he said he skied the same trail all
week long, a nice groomed blue trail, top to bottom, over &
over again. The mountain will be renaming the Vagabond
trail to “Gene’s Run”. We will have to check out future
trail maps to see if that story is true. Well, like I said, this
mountain has something for everyone.
During the week some chose to take the two hour
guided mountain tour while others met up with Billy
Kidd for an hour tour and photo opportunities. Future
reference - the lessons did not live up to the standard set
by other trips.
The natural hot springs of Steamboat are world
famous. The one most visited by Fall Liners was
incredible! The first pool was naturally cooled to 105
degrees- the next pool was cooled to 102 degrees and the
third pool was a chilly 60 degrees. Now, I don’t know
about you but, I don’t care for 60 degree water even when
it is 90 degrees outside. However, Fall Line has some nuts
that jumped right in. Nona Luce, Deb Taraska and Bill
Caden were even daring enough to jump out of the 60
degree pool onto the snow to make snow angels, now that
took guts! If you went after dark, clothing was optional.
Steven Lange heard that and chose to show off his
“package”. Many women offered him the phone number
to federal express so he could ship his package
elsewhere! He didn’t take the hint.
The dinners in Steamboat were great! Ragners had
great food with a cold, but romantic sleigh ride to the
restaurant, just ask Katie Lyons who was wrapped up
like Pocahontas. The Western BBQ was a bit pricey for a
buffet but, the entertainment was good. The 8th Street
Steak House was awesome. It was a grill your own steak
but, hey, I thought this was vacation. Others went to the
Whore House (or was that the Ore House) for a great
meal. Some condos chose to stay in some nights and hook
up with other condos for big group dinners in. The
dinners in were a great chance to get to know each other
better, take funny photos, and play a new game called
“Klackers”. “Klackers” is a great gambling game or, true
to Fall Line fashion, a great drinking game. Thanks to
Roy Canzanese, Tommy Bianco and Michele LeConey for
introducing the game to the group.
Now, we can’t forget the après ski places. There was Bear
Creek Tavern which offered bands daily, but I think the Fall
Line favorite was the Slopeside Grill. Not for the good
food, nor for the inexpensive drinks, but because there was
a girl skiing in a bikini. Let's be realistic. You know she
just skied down from the condos. There is NO WAY she
rode the lift to the top and then skied down but, I don’t
think the guys cared! Just ask Jim Daisey, he has a picture
to prove it. Oh, I forgot, she was also wearing gloves.
We thought frost bite from the bikini girl was going to
be the only injury, but we were wrong. Unfortunately
new member Scott Beckett broke his leg on Thursday.
Since I always try to look on the bright side of life- he
broke it late enough to really enjoy Steamboat since he
skied every day. He broke it
early enough so he could get continued on page 8
Sunday River
Sunday River Wrap-up
By Sally Velez
Talk about great endings to not so good beginnings!
Our trip started off with a few glitches at Barclay Farms,
but with the help of the fantastic group on this trip and
Bill Caden’s quick thinking, we started our trek to Maine
at 6:10PM. Of course let’s not forget to thank Jerry our
Bus Driver who managed to make it an 8-hour trip, getting
us to the hotel at 2:05 AM. Congratulations to Sue
Fairman, for winning the arrival pool.
Saturday was a little hectic, with trails and chairs not
available due to lack of snow, but we made the best of
long lift lines and less than perfect conditions.
Super Bowl Sunday was not kind to us. The morning
welcomed us with rain but many Fall Liners like Sue F,
Joanne, Nancy, Ralph, Tony and a few others skied. They
reported that, besides the pesky rain, the conditions were
acceptable. We fair weather skiers, took the day off and
went into town for lunch. Little by little we ended up
with approximately 15 Fall Liners at the same tavern for
a really nice lunch at the Bethel Inn.
Due to the Eagles disastrous finish and the inability to
do a group party the right way, we decided to give
everyone $15 to be used however each of us deemed fit.
We ended up meeting at 3 different places to watch the
game. Thank you, John Steel, for organizing a group of
Fall Liners to watch the game at the Inn. The Innkeeper
carried a bigger television up the stairs to the second floor
lounge just for us. Thanks also to Joel and Carol for
ordering the pizza for the 12 Fall Liners watching the
game at the Inn. This group paid for the pizza and still had
enough money to buy their own wine and beer using the
money refunded to them from the club. The Phoenix and
Sliders were the other two watering holes used by our
group to watch the game.
Oh my goodness, what a great day Monday turned out to
be. With most of us believing Monday would be an ice
skiing day, we were pleasantly surprised by the sun and
snow conditions. Bill Cella found a damsel in distress
when the other ski club at the Inn left without her. He
introduced her to John S, who had already organized a
group of us for skiing. She skied with us until Keith and
Ray W. decided to do black runs and she decided to go
with them. She was very appreciative of our adopting her
for the day.
We had a few new members join us on this trip, Jackie,
Gary and Stan, to name three. Jackie enjoyed our trip so
much that she came to the next general meeting and
signed up for 2 more trips…way to go Jackie!!
I’d like to thank all 31 club members and Jerry for all of
their support on my first experience as a trip leader. Last,
but definitely not least, a big thank you goes out to Bill
for all of his help and support. Who else would think of
changing the way we play the arrival pool, sit on the bus
and tear off 60 little pieces of paper and convince almost
everyone to play a new game?
Steamboat Springs
continued from page 5
the operation and get back in time to
catch the plane with the group home.
He still had two unused days on his
lift ticket. Most likely, he will get the
refund for the tickets just in time to
pay the down payment for a trip next
year with the club. Scott, you have to
come back and ski with us again!
Unfortunately, the time came to an
end and we had to start heading
home, but not before a breakfast of
champions- oatmeal, grapefruit, wine
and anything you could mix with
vodka. Now that is the way to start
the day - no alcohol abuse in this
club. Getting back proved to be a bit
more challenging then getting there.
Jim Daisey almost got kicked off the
airplane for drinking beer that was
not purchased on the plane. It must
have been a tough day for Dennis
Halterman, rumor has it he was
drinking water on the plane- some
one has the photo to prove it- but, it
could have been vodka. The airport
in Colorado refused to accept ski
bags or boot bags that had any
clothes in them so everyone was
frantically repacking their bags so
they did not have to pay extra when
they got to the “Bag Nazi”. Getting
the bus driver at the Newark airport
to the same level where 42 people
and their bags were located so we
could load up took some sweet talk
with the police officers. They must be
skiers or we would have been
schlepping our stuff up to the next
level.
We all owe a big thank you to
Colleen Family whose snow dancing
gave us fresh powder three days
while we were in Colorado. She has
improved her snow dance to such a
level as to have it snow where ever we
go and we even had a nice coating of
snow to welcome us back to Cherry
Hill. I would also like to thank Jody
Sandberg my “assistant” for her help
through out the trip especially her
awesome negotiating skill that
resolved the mid-week party mess up.
Thanks to Deb Taraska for all of her
help setting up the mid-week party
and for everything else she did
during the week. Thanks to David
Schuld also known as Dr. Love (he
must have gotten that nickname the
day he showed up at the hot tub in a
red bra, boxers and helmet) for all of
his help with Scott Beckett’s
emergency. Thanks to Al Pribula for
not only carrying Scott Beckett’s
poles for me but for always being a
great guy. I am sure Maryanne
Teesdale is also thankful that you
didn’t take pictures of her window
dance. Thanks to Ralph & Nancy
Perrino who took a trip around the
Newark Airport to make sure we were
not leaving anyone behind. Thanks
to everyone who help load and
unload the buses. Also, thanks to
Nona Luce, Jody Sandberg, Maryanne
Teesdale, Colleen Family and Deb
Taraska for being great condo mates.
“2 tie- all tie” “5”. And of course
thanks to Steve Comroe and David
Schuld for being our powder babes
(you know what we called you but, I
had to make it nice for the article).
As I said in my pre-trip article in
July, “Steamboat is my favorite
mountain”. I am already looking
forward to the club going back. I
know I will be on that trip and hope
all of you who were there this year
will join me next time. Anybody that
missed out this year- make sure you
don’t miss the boat- see you at early
sign up!
Jackson Hole
continued from page 1
And the next morning they would
be out and ready.
There is so much to do in Jackson
and the surrounding area that some
of our members took a day off from
skiing. They went dog sledding,
snowmobiling, took the horse
drawn sled ride into the elk
preserve and went on the wildlife
sightseeing tour. Janice Wortham
organized a group of about a dozen
skiers to go to Grand Targhee for
some great powder skiing. Thanks
Janice. Russ Wortham went power
shopping and came back as a
Marlboro Man with a Wyoming
cowboy hat, a silver studded belt
and a bucking bronco belt buckle.
On Wednesday well over half our
group was seen in the Silver Dollar
Bar listening to Steam Powered
Airplane, a terrific blue grass
band. We even saw Bruce
Cunningham arrive after a 10 pm
wake up call from Billy McCoy.
Rumor has it that Bruce slept
through dinner until the following
morning almost every night.
The prepaid breakfast was
always excellent and we could
order anything from the menu
including steak and eggs or more
exotic things like elk sausage.
There was entertainment several
nights in their Silver Dollar Bar
and Grill. Sometimes we would see
the same friendly waitresses
serving dinner that we saw at
breakfast, but then they had days
off to ski or mingle with the
customers in the Silver Dollar Bar.
One evening one of the waitresses
fell out of her chair leaning over to
greet us as we approached to chat.
The rest of them had fun laughing
at her as soon as they knew she was
not hurt.
Apparently people in Jackson are
more trusting than those of us on
the east coast and are not
accustomed to giving out receipts
for skis left at their shops. When
Jim Gargle asked for a receipt the
shop keeper tore off a post-it note
and wrote, “I have your skis,
Wally”. That was Jim’s receipt.
To squeeze the most out of the
vacation Janice, Russ, Kati and Bill
Dodds were the only ones to close
the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, and
then get up several hours later at 4
am for our early departure.
Following are a few comments
from club members on the trip.
“There is so much to do there and
the snow is usually great”. “The
only problem with the Wort Hotel
is getting used to not being
pampered now that the trip is
over”. “I think Jackson and the
Wort are a place we should go to
every other year”. “We might not
have had any whiners on the trip,
but it wouldn’t be a Fall Line trip
without WINE-ers”.
