NEW SMC ELECTED
The State Management Committee has a new Treasurer.
Mark Cash, who has been both an SMC and a National Council member , succeeds Warren Hegarty.
Mark, President Bill Morriss and Secretary Howard Bazeley were unopposed. Vice-President Ivan Davis and Warren
were re-elected as Vice President and as a Committee member respectively.
Administration Manager, Tony Stevenson; Assistant Treasurer Noel Findlay, Minutes Secretary John Hardy and members
Graham McFadzen and Alex Nunn won the ballot for the Committee.
The Media Officer and Editor of Nasho News, Allen Callaghan; Assistant Editor Fred Petersen; Membership Officer Ray
Lower; State Welfare Officer Bruce Reedman and State Padre, Captain John Tatters were re-appointed.
Major General Kevin Cooke AO RFD ED remains the Queensland Patron. He also is Patron of the National Servicemen’s
Memorial Pipes and Drums.
Bill is the Queensland Branch’s eighth President since the late Barry
Vicary (left) founded the NSAA in Toowoomba in November 1987.
The others, following Barry’s untimely death, were Dennis Connon,
Ken Coates, Graham McKenzie, Peter R yan, John Sar geant and
Colin Bell. Barry is wearing the original red lapel badge and pocket
patch. He also has on the white tie that original members wore until
the current tie was adopted firstly with the ribbon colours of the
bought National Servicemen’ s Association commemorative medal
and now those of the Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972
medal. At this point, the new Association was still the Ex-National
Servicemen’s Association as shown by the banner they carried in the
first Anzac Day parade in which they participated in Toowoomba. It
also was still confined to members of the 1965-72 National Service
scheme.
Barry Douglas Vicary was born in Echuca, Victoria on 3 April 1945.
He was called up in the first intake in 1965, entering camp on 12 June
that year . He was stationed at Puckapunyal and Singleton before
being posted to 6RAR at Canungra Jungle Warfare Centre in Queensland where he went on to become an Infantry
instructor. Upon dischar ge Barry held a number of jobs including stockman and then landscape gardener . He married
Mary and they lived in Toowoomba with their eight daughters. He was critical that most National Servicemen who did
not see active service received no recognition nor
benefits for their compulsory service of two years
(six months in the first scheme). Although their
jobs were protected, many saw others promoted
over them while they were away.
The idea of a National Servicemen’s Association
spread Australia-wide but unfortunately Barry
died in January 1991 aged only 45. He did see
National Servicemen march for the first time in
their own right in the Toowoomba ANZAC Day
parade in 1988. (At left, the 1st Brisbane march)
Barry is remembered through the Barry Vicary
Fellowship, the Association’s highest national
honour. Three have been awarded to date.
COCK O’THE WALK
Every Army National Servicemen who trained at Wacol will remember the Courier Mail Cup and the
Telegraph Shield.
They were amongst the major
trophies that companies, platoons and
individuals competed for during their
intakes.
When National Service ended in
1959, they may have been taken home
by the last company commanders to
win them but their current
whereabouts are unknown.
1/727120 Alan Smith, of Brisbane
North Branch, has provided
photographs and details of the tropies
with his father -in-law, Major E M
Allison who, as a Captain, was
Adjutant of the 11th National Service
Training Battalion from 1951 to 1955.
The photo shows Captain Allison
receiving the Battalion trophy from
the then Governor of Queensland,
Sir Henry Abel Smith, in 1954. Note
the Winter battledress.
The main Battalion level trophies
were:
Secombe Shield , named after Major
General B.C.Secombe CBE, General
Officer Commanding Northern
Command, for the company amassing
the highest points for the intake in the
Cock o’ the Walk competition. Rex
Kirkham, of the Gunners Signallers
Club, was a member of one of the
winning companies. The winners also
received a pennant.
Telegraph Shield , presented by the
former Brisbane Telegraph
Newspaper for platoon drill. Competing platoons were limited to 30 men judged on dress, condition of rifles
and equipment, rifle exercises and drill including a march past. The Editor, a member of 1 Platoon A Company
( Infantry) in the 1st intake 1958, was a cadet journalist on the Telegraph.
Courier Mail Cup for the best Company in battle and physical ef ficiency was presented for the first time in
1953.
Thiel Shield presented by Thiel Photographic Studios for the company amassing the highest number of points
for drill on Battalion parades during the intake. Thiel Studios were the of ficial photographers. They were
bought by an advertising agency who consigned all the National Service negatives to the dump.
Battalion Shield for field and track events, held once each intake. Place getters received a pennant and the
Company scoring the highest points received the Shield. Our longest serving President, Colin Bell, competed
in his intake in 1959.
PAGE 6
Reid Cup, presented by Mrs.Reid of Annerley for the best team of four National Service rifle shots in
the Battalion. One of these cups has been found on a rubbish tip at Biloela and now is in the RSL club
there.
Boxing Shield presented by Mr.C Clayton, the barber at Wacol Army camp.
Bill Br own Sports Shield for football, tennis, basket ball and soft ball. The photo shows Captain
Allison with trophies won by B Company in the 2nd intake of 1954 .
Those on the tr ee fr om top
are the Bill Br own Shield,
the Telegraph Shield and the
P.T. Shield. He is holding
the Thiel Shield above the
Battalion and Secombe
Shields. The Cock o’the
Walk pennant also is visible.
Major Allison joined the
Army in the Australian
Instructional Corps prior to
World W ar T wo. He saw
active service in the southwest
Pacific including
Borneo.
He became Adjutant of the
2nd Divisional Colum and
Northern Command Troops
RAASC before becoming
Adjutant of 1 1th National
Service Training Battlion at
Wacol 1951-55.
He was Of ficer Commanding
101 Transport Platoon and
then Adjutant of the Jungle
Training Centre, Canungra.
His final posting was as Corps
Staff Of ficer in the
headquarters of Northern
Command at Victoria
Barracks in Brisbane.
Major Allison retired in June
1965, but at the Army’s
request, following the
outbreak of the Vietnam war,
stayed another two years for
special service at the Jungle
Training Centre, Canungra.
This would have renewed his
contacts with National
Servicemen, many of whom
credit their Canungra training as vital. The photographs from Major Allison’s albums were supplied by
his daughter, Mrs.Lorraine Smith.
LIFE AND DEATH DECISIONS
When I had my heart bypass in 2002, I asked my doctor what would it mean to my life?
His blunt reply was that I now had 10 years to put
my affairs in order. None of us want to die, but the
Last Post is going to sound for us all in much less
time than we wish to contemplate.
So, what have you done about making sure that you
have the funeral you want; that you have a prepaid
funeral plan or the money set aside so your family
doesn’t have to find it in the midst of a stressful
time; that you have left information on where to
find important documents such as your funeral
plan, insurance policies, house deeds, birth
certificate, bank accounts and details such as credit
cards, Medibank, pension card and so on.
And equally vital, they know where your will is so
they can carry out your wishes who will get your
money and possessions when you are on eternal
PAGE 8
leave up above or dixie bashing forever down
below.
To help you sort out details you probably haven’ t
even thought about, Metropolitan Funerals,
Westpac Bank, the Queensland Government’ s
organ donation program and Bennett Carroll
Solicitors have combined to of fer your branch a
free seminar on planning for life and death. That’s a
powerful combo, so contact State HQ for details.
And a blunt word about donating organs. You won’t
be needing them again when you’re dead. Instead of
their being turned to ashes or to dust in a few days,
they can turn death into life for others.
Part of you will live on – that’ s something worth
doing.
