The Circle Game by Dr. (CAPT, Ret, USN) Cory Whitehead, RES ’92, tells the remarkable and sometimes painful story of her life in her autobiography. From her roots growing up in rural Pennsylvania to attaining the rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy, the book details her meteoric rise through the ranks while battling alcoholism and bi-polar disorder and the challenges they posed. In spite of her addiction and manic depression, she continued to face these challenges and rise above them, eventually commanding one of the largest major commands in the U.S. Navy of over 130,000 sailors. Experts warned Americans in 1991 that U.S. forces would suffer heavy casualties at the hands of Iraqi forces who allegedly knew how to hold ground from years of fi ghting Iranians. However, late in the afternoon of 26 Feb 91, the lead cavalry troops of “Cougar Squadron,” the 2d Squadron of the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment, charged out of a sandstorm and caught Iraq’s Republican Guard Corps in the open desert along the North-South grid line of a military map referred to as the “73 Easting.” Taken by surprise, the defending Iraqi armor brigade was rapidly swept away in salvos of American tank and missile fi re in what became the largest tank battle in the history of the U.S. Army since WWII. This plunges the reader into the fi ght and its aftermath, explaining how a victory won decisively by soldiers on the battlefi eld was lost by a U.S. Army chain of command remote from the fi ghting. The book’s title is a geographic reference to an actual place in time -- a military base that was at the center of the drug war, deep inside the jungles of southern Colombia. The story is told as historic fi ction, but is steeped in facts and inspired by true events as experienced by the author while assigned to Colombia. It focuses on the many facets of the US military advisory mission in the jungles, valleys, plains, and mountainous regions of Colombia in support of the Colombian Armed Forces. There are chapters on combat action with FMLN commandos in El Salvador and FARC guerrillas in Colombia. This is a primer on the art and science of strategic communication, covering the foundation of communication strategies as well as solid tactics, techniques, and procedures for media relations, campaign planning, crisis communication, and strategic communications planning. It takes a compelling look at how communications processes can be made to function more effi ciently and with greater effectiveness, whether conducted by governments, organizations, or military units. From the most basic precepts of media relations to massive information campaigns originating from government or major corporations, Eder argues that communication that is broadbased and tied to strategic objectives can succeed using a variety of methods from storytelling to building external champions. ISBN: 978-1-61251-0477 Somewhere in France, Somewhere in Germany, by Mr. Francis P. Sempa, NSS ’07, tells the story of his father’s journey through WWII. His father entered military service as part of the 29th Infantry Division in April 1941, landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day-plus one, fought in the treacherous hedgerows of Normandy, participated in the capture of St. Lo and the siege of Brest, assaulted the fortifi cations of the Siegfried Line, crossed the Rhine River, and reached the west bank of the Elbe River. He earned the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Arrowhead, four campaign ribbons, and the Good Conduct Medal. Throughout, Sempa dutifully wrote letters home to his parents and brother. Using those letters, local newspaper articles, the 29th Division’s After Action Reports, and several books about the history of the 29th Division in WWII, Francis Sempa traces his father’s steps from training camps in the U.S. and England to the battlefi elds of France and Germany. This is a critical commentary on our military strategy, providing background on the law of war, boots-on-the-ground examples of how interpretation has gone awry in practice, and analysis on how these laws should be applied. It considers how misinterpretations of law and policy can misdirect the military from the objective of achieving victory, particularly when nation-building, peacekeeping, and counterinsurgency operations objectives are confl icting. Reardon, FAC. When the Civil War began, Northern soldiers and civilians alike sought a framework to help make sense of the chaos that confronted them. Many turned fi rst to the classic European military texts from the Napoleonic era, especially Antoine Henri Jomini’s Summary of the Art of War. As the author shows, Jomini’s work was only one voice in what ultimately became a lively and contentious national discourse about how the North should conduct war at a time when warfare itself was rapidly changing. She argues that the absence of a strong intellectual foundation for the conduct of war at its start- -or, indeed, any consensus on the need for such a foundation--ultimately contributed to the length and cost of the confl ict.
