IF HOF New International Fellows in Hall of Fame The College recently inducted three International Fellows (IFs) into the Army War College IF Hall of Fame. Congratulations to General David J. Hurley, Australia, Class of 1997, inducted on May 16, 2012, Lt Gen Claudio Graziano, Italy, Class of 1997, and Maj Gen Timothy J. Keating, New Zealand, Class of 2004, both inducted on March 22, 2012. To be inducted, graduates must have attained the highest positions in their respective nations’ armed forces, or have held an equivalent position by rank or responsibility in a multi-national organization. General Hurley became Australia’s Chief of Defense on July 4, 2011. On December 6, 2011, 6 Foundation & Alumni News Spring 2012 General General David David J. Maj Gen Keating became Chief of Army in New Zealand on February 15, 2011. The total number of Army War College IF Hall of Fame inductees is now 40, and we look forward to many more! DDE Department of Distance Education Update Hello Distance Education (formerly Corresponding Studies) alumni and friends! We continue to expand our orientation program for incoming students. Many of you wrote in your surveys over the years that an orientation prior to starting the DDE program would be very helpful. Our successful “pilot” a few years ago convinced us to expand the voluntary, on-site orientation program to two weekends each Spring. The program is appreciated by the Class of 2014 students who attended this past month. If you know future DDE students who are unaware of this, please have them contact us. COL Rick Pacious, DDE ‘11 Class Treasurer, presented Ms. Lorie Southerland, Ft. Bragg Fisher House, a check for $3,922.53 in November 2011. Th e approved class donation was the remaining balance of the DDE 2011 class account. Fisher House is a unique private-public partnership that provides “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers, enabling family members to be close to a loved one during hospitalization. Families must often travel great distances and incur many expenses during these extremely stressful periods. Summer is a busy time for the department with the incoming class and summer resident courses. Unfortunately, this also signals the time to say goodbye to some of our faculty and staff. Earlier this year, COL Dave Collins DDE ’05, course author for Theater Strategy, left for a new assignment in the G-6 at the National Guard Bureau. COL Roy Hall DDE ‘08, who directed the Campaigning course, leaves Carlisle to enjoy retirement. COL Dean Stodter RES ‘05, in charge of the Regional Issues and Interests course, also retired. COL Mike Moyer DDE ‘06, who ran the Strategic Leadership course, completes his retiree recall. CDR Kamran Dil, course author for the Second Resident Course, will move later this summer to Marine Corps War College as a faculty instructor. As you can see, the department will have several key positions to staff in the coming year. Those of you wanting to continue your education will be interested to know that the USAWC will release its Life Long Learning program to the public in the coming months. One of the courses available to all is our Effective Writing Seminar. Over the years, our faculty has seen the erosion of writing capabilities in our students. To combat this problem, DDE created a program to help students become better writers before taking their fi rst academic course. We wanted to offer the course to all in the hope that prospective students, distance or resident program, Mrs. Bev Cordrey (left), widow of COL Ted D. Cordrey, Chairman, DDE and RES ’89 grad, visited USAWC in March 2012 on what would have been Ted’s 65th birthday. With her was Ted’s sister, Ms. Connie Cummings, standing in front of the DDE Conference Room named for COL Cordrey. COL Cordrey suff ered a fatal heart attack in 1996 while he was Chairman of the Department of Corresponding Studies (now Distance Education). could benefi t from such an opportunity. We will eventually make all of our course directives available online. This is a challenging time for the Army. Many of our students are mobilized in Afghanistan or other locales and they continue their studies in an uncertain strategic environment. Budgets are under review. Our leaders scrutinize organizations and missions for relevancy and economies of scale. We believe the Distance Education Program has always provided a great educational value to the Army and with your support and help, we will continue to do so well into the future. Dr. Clay Chun, Chairman, Department of Distance Education Brigadier General Meelis Kiili, IF Estonia, DDE ’11, visited USAWC in March with the Baltic Defense College Delegation. He is one of the exceptional International Fellows who has graduated from the Distance Education program and is very proud of that, as we are of him. He visited with the Commandant during the visit.
