10 Honorary Doctorate Recipients Lupe Ramos-Montigny Honorary Doctorate of Public Service Lupe Ramos-Montigny was one of seven children born to her parents, Ysidso and Maria, in Weslaco, Texas. The family traveled north when she was a young girl, to harvest tomatoes in Indiana, and beets and cherries in Michigan. This experience taught her the value of sustained effort, the importance of education and the need for advocacy for minorities. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, and her Master of Science degree, with an emphasis in Bilingual Education, from Grand Valley State University. First and foremost an educator, Ramos- Montigny worked for the Michigan Public Schools for 36 years. Most of her professional career was dedicated to the Grand Rapids Public Schools. Her commitment to serve students, families, educators and communities continues. Today, she cultivates a harvest of another kind, serving as a role model for civic action, cultural awareness, gender equity and dedicated leadership. For 12 years, she has served as Chairperson of the Committee to Honor Cesar E. Chavez, which hosts an annual social justice march and community gathering, a Cinco de Mayo celebration, and a scholarship and awards gala. The committee advances the educational aspirations of Hispanic students pursuing a college education. For the past eight years, six $1,000 scholarships have been presented annually to students attending Grand Rapids Community College. Ramos-Montigny also is a member of the Student Advancement Foundation Board and Child Advocate with the Kent County Citizens Friend of the Court Advisory Board, of which she is currently the vice-chair. She was the organizing force behind the Michigan Democratic Hispanic/Latino Caucus, serving as Chairperson for seven years. In 2002 she was elected to chair the Kent County Democratic Party, serving as its first Latina. In 2003, she became the first Latina to become the second vice-chair for the Michigan Democratic Party. She still serves in this capacity. In November 2012, she was elected to the Michigan State Board of Education. Her numerous awards include the Latina Wings Award, from the Grand Rapids Caribbean Association, and the Mayor George Heartwell Champion of Diversity Award. She has a son, Gerard, a daughter, Irma, and a granddaughter, Amelia Rose.
Honorary Doctorate Recipients Dr. Joel Robertson Honorary Doctorate of Health Services Dr. Joel Robertson, a leader in the area of brain chemistry, is an internationally recognized clinician, best-selling author, lecturer and consultant. Over the past 20 years, he has assessed more than 14,000 individuals, seeking to improve their personal performance, health and wellness. During his professional career, Robertson has been a featured speaker at numerous American Medical Association and other professionally sponsored conferences. Robertson founded his non-profit organization, the Robertson Research Institute, to enhance lives and advance the knowledge of health care professionals through information technology. Currently, the institute is focusing on developing its online presence as well as RHealth Advisor, a revolutionary medical knowledge platform. The online programs Brain Chemistry Optimization and Behavioral Medicine Self-Care, which are derived from the Robertson Performance Enhancement Program, have been developed for the convenience and betterment of individuals, and as educational resources for clinicians and their patients. These programs help individuals overcome the personal inhibitors that compromise overall health, wellness and performance. RHealth Advisor, powered by NxOpinion, includes a health knowledge-base and application platform that uses mobile technology, personal computer and Web interfaces to deliver a suite of healthcare applications. The RHealth Advisor medical knowledge platform is one of Microsoft’s globally featured video case studies on best application of Microsoft technology to real world solutions. Robertson received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Ferris in 1974. 11
