Dear Graduate,
Congratulations on your graduation from Ferris State University. Today you have
reached an important milestone. Receiving a college degree places you within
a unique and special segment of society. You now belong to an exceptional group
of individuals — Ferris State University alumni, who are leaders in all facets of
business, education, industry, health care and public service.
We are extraordinarily proud of you and your achievements. On behalf of our
faculty, I extend our congratulations to you on this most special of days. Like you,
we understand that commencement is just the beginning of exciting and rewarding
opportunities. We are confident that, together, we have helped create a lifelong
commitment to discovery, learning and continued growth. When we may be of
assistance to you, please call upon us.
As you enjoy this day, I encourage you to pause and thank those who have helped
and supported you throughout this educational journey. It is important to remember
that today’s achievement stems not only from your own efforts, but also those of
family, friends, faculty, fellow students and scholarship donors.
You have now joined a learned community of more than 130,000 Ferris alumni.
You and your fellow alumni are ambassadors of the University to those within
their professions — employers, co-workers, clients — and to personal acquaintances.
In this role you can encourage prospective students to make use of the free online

Honorary Doctorate Recipients
Richard L. Antonini
Honorary Doctorate of Business and Industry
Richard L. Antonini retired as CEO and
chairman of Foremost in 2000 after a
distinguished career with the Grand Rapidsbased
company. During his nearly 32 years
with Foremost, the operation grew from a
staff of 225 to more than 1,500. Today, it has
grown to more than 4,000. The son of Italian
immigrants, Antonini began his career at BDO
Seidman in Grand Rapids after graduating
from Ferris State University with a degree in
Accounting in 1964.
Antonini joined Foremost in 1969 as assistant
to the president. During his tenure, he served
in several capacities, including Executive Vice
President, Chief Financial Officer and Senior
Vice President. He was named Chief Executive
Officer and Chairman in 1986, the same year
he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of
Ferris State University. He and his executive
team completed an $812 million merger with Farmers Insurance Group of Companies
in 2000.
In addition to his business accomplishments, Antonini has served on the Junior
Achievement Leadership Circle, the Advisory Council for Wedgwood Christian
Services, the Old Kent Financial Corporation Board and the Cornerstone University
Board of Directors, and he has been involved with the Mackinac Center for Public
Policy. He also has chaired campaigns for Wedgwood, West Michigan United Way,
the YMCA and the Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes. He also served as Chairman of the
Board for the Spectrum Health Foundation and co-chaired the Helen DeVos Children’s
Hospital “For Our Kids” capital campaign.
In May 2012, Antonini was inducted into the Junior Achievement West Michigan
Business Hall of Fame, which honors prominent business leaders who have made
extraordinary contributions. He has earned the respect of the West Michigan
community, and championed the free enterprise system and its value to the area.

Honorary Doctorate Recipients
Lupe Ramos-Montigny
Honorary Doctorate of Public Service
Lupe Ramos-Montigny was one of seven
children born to her parents, Ysidso and
Maria, in Weslaco, Texas. The family traveled
north when she was a young girl, to harvest
tomatoes in Indiana, and beets and cherries
in Michigan. This experience taught her the
value of sustained effort, the importance
of education and the need for advocacy
for minorities. She earned her Bachelor of
Science degree at Pan American University
in Edinburg, Texas, and her Master of
Science degree, with an emphasis in Bilingual
Education, from Grand Valley State University.
First and foremost an educator, Ramos-
Montigny worked for the Michigan Public
Schools for 36 years. Most of her professional
career was dedicated to the Grand Rapids
Public Schools. Her commitment to serve
students, families, educators and communities
continues. Today, she cultivates a harvest of
another kind, serving as a role model for civic action, cultural awareness, gender equity
and dedicated leadership.
For 12 years, she has served as Chairperson of the Committee to Honor Cesar E. Chavez,
which hosts an annual social justice march and community gathering, a Cinco de Mayo
celebration, and a scholarship and awards gala. The committee advances the educational
aspirations of Hispanic students pursuing a college education. For the past eight years,
six $1,000 scholarships have been presented annually to students attending Grand Rapids
Community College.
Ramos-Montigny also is a member of the Student Advancement Foundation Board and
Child Advocate with the Kent County Citizens Friend of the Court Advisory Board, of
which she is currently the vice-chair. She was the organizing force behind the Michigan
Democratic Hispanic/Latino Caucus, serving as Chairperson for seven years. In 2002 she
was elected to chair the Kent County Democratic Party, serving as its first Latina. In 2003,
she became the first Latina to become the second vice-chair for the Michigan Democratic
Party. She still serves in this capacity. In November 2012, she was elected to the Michigan
State Board of Education. Her numerous awards include the Latina Wings Award, from
the Grand Rapids Caribbean Association, and the Mayor George Heartwell Champion of
Diversity Award.
She has a son, Gerard, a daughter, Irma, and a granddaughter, Amelia Rose.

Honorary Doctorate Recipients
Dr. Joel Robertson
Honorary Doctorate of Health Services
Dr. Joel Robertson, a leader in the area
of brain chemistry, is an internationally
recognized clinician, best-selling author,
lecturer and consultant. Over the past 20
years, he has assessed more than 14,000
individuals, seeking to improve their personal
performance, health and wellness. During
his professional career, Robertson has been
a featured speaker at numerous American
Medical Association and other professionally
sponsored conferences.
Robertson founded his non-profit
organization, the Robertson Research
Institute, to enhance lives and advance the
knowledge of health care professionals
through information technology. Currently,
the institute is focusing on developing its
online presence as well as RHealth Advisor,
a revolutionary medical knowledge platform.
The online programs Brain Chemistry Optimization and Behavioral Medicine Self-Care,
which are derived from the Robertson Performance Enhancement Program, have been
developed for the convenience and betterment of individuals, and as educational
resources for clinicians and their patients. These programs help individuals overcome
the personal inhibitors that compromise overall health, wellness and performance.
RHealth Advisor, powered by NxOpinion, includes a health knowledge-base and
application platform that uses mobile technology, personal computer and Web
interfaces to deliver a suite of healthcare applications. The RHealth Advisor medical
knowledge platform is one of Microsoft’s globally featured video case studies on best
application of Microsoft technology to real world solutions.
Robertson received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Ferris in 1974.

Commencement Symbols
The Ferris State University Seal
The Ferris State University seal represents founder Woodbridge N. Ferris’
educational philosophy, which has guided the University since 1884.
The torch symbolizes enlightenment — the light of truth and
knowledge, the fire of inspiration challenging each student to excel.
Opportunity and industry are the underlying principles of this
philosophy and provide the graduate with guidelines to follow
throughout life. Opportunity is the chance for each individual to realize
his or her greatest potential. Industry is the combination of the vital
qualities of diligence, perseverance and discipline.
The Mace Bearer
The office of Mace Bearer is ceremonial and is derived from medieval England, when an official
taking office or opening court needed a bodyguard. In those times, the mace, a formidable
weapon, was held ready to protect the person in charge. Since that time, however, it has become a
symbol of office and is carried in the processional to dignify the ceremony.
A University representative known as the Mace Bearer carries the mace and leads in the Presidential
party. The mace is displayed on stage during the ceremony.
The University mace was created by staff of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program
for use during formal University functions.

Ferris State University: A National Reputation for Excellence
History of Leadership
Woodbridge N. Ferris founded his “industrial school” in 1884 to provide worker retraining
following declines in the lumber and mining industries. Though inspired by the economic conditions
of the day, Mr. Ferris’ philosophy of combining instruction in marketable skills with a liberal arts
education remains just as relevant today, as students prepare to meet the complex changes of the
new millennium. Another of Mr. Ferris’ beliefs — that all willing and able students should have the
opportunity to pursue a higher education — has given many successful individuals the start they
might not otherwise have received.
By its adherence to these principles, today’s Ferris State University has earned a national
reputation for excellence. Recognized as a pioneer in career-oriented education and a leader
in new occupational programming, Ferris is emulated by universities throughout the nation.
Other factors contributing to the educational opportunities available at Ferris include the selection
of faculty on the basis of practical experience as well as academic ability, the special care taken in
the development of curricula, a commitment to providing state-of-the-art equipment for instruction
in technical areas and the use of advisory committees to keep programs in touch with the current
needs of industry. The University’s concept of “laddering” enables students to build from a twoyear
to a four-year program according to their careers and personal goals. Students’ campus life is
enriched by a lively schedule of athletic, cultural and recreational events.
Five Decades of Growth
The efficacy of this distinctive educational approach is reflected in the growth of the institution
over the past five decades. When Ferris became a state college in the fall of 1950, it consisted
entirely of one permanent structure, the Alumni Building, and some surplus Army barracks.
Fewer than 1,000 students were enrolled, and there were fewer than 50 faculty members.
The campus itself covered less than 20 acres.
By contrast, current enrollment is more than 14,000 and the 880-acre campus comprises
115 educational, administrative and maintenance buildings, student activity facilities and
residence halls.
Eight Colleges Prepare Students
The University has eight colleges — Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Services,
Engineering Technology, Health Professions, the Michigan College of Optometry, Pharmacy and
Kendall College of Art and Design.
The College of Arts and Sciences is noted for its graduates’ high rates of acceptance into
prestigious medical, dental, law and graduate schools. In this college are the cultural programs
and enrichment activities that Ferris offers in the arts and sciences disciplines.
The College of Business provides career-oriented business education. Responsive to the changing
needs of the business world, the college’s curriculum focuses on preparing its graduates for dealing
with real issues as members and leaders of tomorrow’s workforce.
The College of Education and Human Services is a leader in education, criminal justice, recreation
and digital media. The college is unique in Michigan because of its leadership in a number of
partnerships that foster specialized professional education for all its students within the community
and state.

The College of Engineering Technology is one of the largest in the nation. The college has
world-class labs and state-of-the-art equipment, made possible by ongoing financial support
from its industry partners. Some of Ferris’ technology programs are one-of-a-kind in Michigan
and the nation.
The College of Health Professions offers a wide range of degrees for future health care
professionals. Students benefit from small class sizes, state-of-the-industry equipment and clinical
or internship experiences. Graduates are in high demand both locally and nationally.
The Michigan College of Optometry is one of 21 schools or colleges of optometry in the United
States and the only college of optometry in Michigan. MCO doctors and student interns deliver
state-of-the-art eyecare to thousands of patients in the region. Graduates receive a Doctor of
Optometry degree.
College of Pharmacy graduates compose more than half of Michigan’s practicing pharmacists.
The college is equipped with exceptional facilities and resources. Graduates receive a Doctor of
Pharmacy degree.
Kendall College of Art and Design, on the Grand Rapids campus, offers graduate and
undergraduate fine arts degrees as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Art History.

Academic Regalia
The pageantry of commencement is a time-honored ritual dating back to ecclesiastical observances
of the 12th and 13th centuries. Hence, today’s academic raiment owes its origins to clerical garb
designed to impart dignity to solemn, scholarly occasions.
The basis for the standardization of the various features of the American regalia was formed at a
special intercollegiate conference held in 1895 at Columbia University. Three types of gowns are
indicated by the code.
• Bachelor’s gowns have long, bell-shaped sleeves.
• Master’s gowns have oblong sleeves which drape gracefully below the knees and are
open at the wrist.
• Doctoral gowns are faced with black velvet, with three bars of velvet across the
bell-shaped sleeves.
Hoods worn by master’s and doctoral graduates are made of material identical to the gowns and
are lined in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree. Colored velvet or
velveteen binds the hoods and indicates the department to which the degree pertains. The color
of the tassel denotes the wearer’s field of academic specialization, except for the doctoral degree
earner, who wears either gold or black.

Certification of Graduation
Commencement is not a certification of graduation but rather a ceremony that celebrates academic
achievements. Therefore, participation in any Commencement ceremony does not affirm that the
graduate has satisfactorily completed all degree requirements. Degrees presented at Ferris State
University Commencement ceremonies are subject to the satisfactory completion of the specific
requirements of the individual degree programs of the colleges and University.
Graduates must submit their clearance form to their college’s Commencement Coordinator at
least 12 weeks prior to the ceremony in which they plan to participate or their names will not
appear in the Commencement program. In order to have the program printed and back in
time for the ceremonies, we must adhere to these deadlines. Graduates who have missed the
deadline may ask their colleges' Commencement Coordinator to place their names in the next
Commencement’s program.

Distinction Key
Honors designations are based on the accumulated average earned during all enrollment periods
