GINNY FOAT
Keep Palm Springs
Moving Forward
PALM SPRINGS
CITY COUNCIL
I have worked hard to keep the promises I made to you when
I ran for office and now we need to plan for the future.
DOWNTOWN: Continue the reconstruction, reinvention and
revitalization of downtown with minimal impact to and much support for existing
businesses. Re-design our traffic patterns offering optimal visibility for businesses
and ample parking for patrons. Continue to promote innovative ideas that increase
our ever-expanding tourism base, assuring a year round economy and a healthy
year round business atmosphere.
ECONOMY: Continue to retain our businesses through investment
programs such as hotel renovation, façade improvement plans and interior redesign
programs. Recruit new “green” businesses to create jobs for the 21st century through
the expanded use and promotion of the I-Hub. Expand and continue to diversify our
economy by active involvement in our redevelopment efforts; continue to strengthen
our financial reserves through my active involvement in budgeting, financial
oversight and innovative revenue generating programs such as those we created for
the film and airline industries. I will continue to work closely with corporations and
individuals interested in investing in Palm Springs.
OUR NEIGHBORHOODS
and QUALITY OF LIFE: Continue to open doors for citizen
involvement through the Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee and
our Boards and Commissions. Assure that neighborhoods are receiving the support
they need from Measure J funds. As tourism increases I will work to make sure our
quality of life is preserved and our public safety personnel have the resources to
keep us safe. That will include overseeing strict adherence to the Vacation Rental
and Event House Ordinance and funding neighborhood policing efforts. I will work
to develop new parks including the Tahquitz Creek Master Plan and other
opportunities for pocket parks throughout our city.
SUSTAINABILITY: I will work to ensure that bike lanes are included
when our streets are repaved, that drought tolerant landscaping is implemented
whenever possible using water runoff or storm water and that the City takes
advantage of solar power at every opportunity. I will continue to work on
preserving open space and supporting the conversion of the Chino Cone to public
lands. I will continue to preserve and promote our mid-century modern history
and all other preservation efforts.
MAJOR PROJECTS: Through my advocacy and with my leadership,
we can be proud of our new and well-run homeless shelter for our less fortunate
neighbors and the City’s new shelter for homeless pets. I will focus on ensuring
that current services are secure and well-funded while working toward providing
even more services at these two state-of-the-art facilities. I will also continue to
work though my position on the Riverside County Transportation Commission and
the CVAG Transportation Committee to advocate for daily rail service to the
Coachella Valley.
I would be honored with your vote for City Council.
Bradford J. Salamon
Artist and The Gentle Art of Perception
Sometimes an artist gives up all for his creative muse - - for Van Gough,
it was an ear; for Gauguin it was the bourgeois life of tarp salesman; for
Bradford J. Salamon it was the comfort of hearth and home.
Growing up in the Southern California beach communities, Bradford J.
Salamon was surrounded by surfers and art. His father was a commercial
art dealer, selling prints and limited editions. With that as his muse, Bradford
entered the world of commercial art. He had a career, a mortgage, and a
family – all things that many equate with a good life. But Bradford felt the tug
– he instinctively knew his art could be so much more, but what?
At the Art Institute of Southern California, Bradford refined his skills. He
found mentors such as Jeremy Lipking and David Leffel , artists who further
encouraged Bradford. He found the world of contemporary art. He studied the
art of museums. In this process he lost the career, mortgage and family. But
in this journey, Bradford’s art began to evolve.
Bradford is an intuitive painter. He paints figures –portraits that captured
a sitter in a moment, not a pose. Preferring to choose the sitter, and NOT
to be chosen by the sitter, Bradford draws from the essence of the sitter.
His visages, portraits is too confining a term, evoke John Singer Sargent –
capture the light and the movement rather than a face frozen in time.
While the finished work may be thought of as a portrait Bradford’s process
is not so simple. His portraits are comprised of a series of portraits. He often
captures the works in progress on his iPhone. The collection of portraits and
photos form the basis for many of Bradford’s videos. The video captures what
Bradford is seeking – awareness of the process; awareness of the connection
and affect of art on the subject, the viewer and ultimately its creator; and
awareness of our humanity.
Why this intricate process? Bradford has stated that his process “(d)eepens
my relationships with other human beings that no other act would accomplish.
The process of painting is an interaction, which cannot be done from memory.
Human beings are three-dimensional. In order to portray the real person, the
artist must interact. Spending hours and hours cannot help but deepen the
connection and affect the art. This close kinship brings out the intimate details
of the sitter and his or her creative nature; and the artist’s response to it.”
Bradford brings the same intensity to his paintings of inanimate, vintage
objects. For him, these objects connect the past with the present and expand
the artist’s range of perceiving the world around him. For Bradford J. Salamon
this is what the art process is all about. – perceiving the world and not just
seeing it.
Hello all you
photos:
JOHN HEDGES
FABULOUS people.
Pinkie’s Place
Hello all you WONDERFUL, AMAZING people out there.
I can’t believe that is already October. Up here on the
mountain the weather is beautiful and we have even
had a fire in our fireplace already.....I love it. Speaking
of October, we have the Idyllwild Quilt show going on
October 12th and 13th. I have 4 quilts going into the
show and would love to see you all up here. AND if you
are a couple, the husbands get in free, just decide on
which one is the husband.
I hope many of you were able to make to The Saguaro Hotel on
Sunday the 29th of September for the AIDS Assistance Program
Disco Tea Dance with Thelma Houston. WOW what a night. AND
yours truly Pinkie along with Bella da Ball and Marina Mac were
asked up on stage to be back up dancers for Thelma. It was just
an amazing night and we raised money for AAP. Thank you LIVE
Magazine for bring a sponsor of the event. LIVE Magazine is
always helping the community so a big thanks to Juli and Levvy.
And thanks to all the other sponsers. If you were unable to make
it, you can still make donations to the AIDS Assistance Program,
just contact me and I’ll get you in touch with them. Contact me at
PINKIEMERINGUE@yahoo.com
Start planning your New Years Eve now. Take a short one hour
drive up to Idyllwild where we are bringing in the New Year at The
Rustic Theatre. The cast of the Bella da Ball dinner revue at AZUL
will all be in the show. You can contact me about getting tickets.
We will be bringing in the New York New Years at 9:00 our time.....
so you can drive back down after the show or there are several
Inn’s in town that would love to have you stay.
Now for my moment of meditation. In moments of sadness, the
seeds of new growth are planted. Sometimes we cry because we
know that the person that we are will soon disappear, transformed
into someone else, someone closer to who we really are.
In these moments, we realize that the world is more mysterious
and wonderful than anyone has ever been able to explain. Faced
with this truth, tears come to our eyes, not unhappy tears; tears of
transformation.
Here is a little quote for you “In sadness, I sit alone in silence.
I welcome the new and let go of the old. I welcome the
transformation. I am grateful my tears.”
Please go out and have the MOST AMAZING day. Enjoy all that
Autumn has to offer, come visit us up in Idyllwild for a day.
Walk. Get Tested. Stop AIDS on Saturday, October 19
Sponsored by Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, 26th Desert AIDS Walk helps benefit
both D.A.P. and community partners

Vol 6 Issue 141 September 21 thru October 5, 2012
Throughout its 30 years of service in the communities of the Coachella
Valley, dedicated volunteers, donors, and sponsors have been the
lifeblood of Desert AIDS Project. During a quarter-century of Desert
AIDS Walks, they have helped to raise almost $6.25 million from
friends and families, as well as through significant sponsorships from
community partnerships.
Local heroes like Patrick Jordan, Keith Markovitz, Barbara Keller, Mark Anton,
Linda Stevens, Rick Draughon and many others have stepped forward once again,
to show their support as top fundraisers. They invite you to join the fun at the
26th Desert AIDS Walk, presented by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians,
beginning at 7:30 AM, on Saturday, October 19 at Ruth Hardy Park.
Walgreens, which has an in-house pharmacy at D.A.P. for client convenience,
will be the Walk’s Health and Wellness Fair presenting sponsor. Other sponsors
include Pride Card Services, Desert Regional Medical Center, and Eisenhower
Medical Center. Stroll through the Fair and enjoy some early-morning coffee and
muffins from Koffi before warming up for the Walk with Kristin Olson of Urban
Yoga. Once a few calories are burned on the Walk, there will be tasty sandwiches
from Subway and tempting ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s back at Ruth Hardy Park.
If you can’t be there to Walk on October 19, consider making a donation by
visiting desertaidswalk.org/, as everyone helps D.A.P. move toward this year’s
Walk goal of $250,000. For the fourth year in a row, Walgreens has been running
its month-long Red Ribbon promotion in support of the Walk in local area stores.
Last year’s promotion donated more than $10,000. Revivals, the local chain of
resale stores whose sales benefit D.A.P., is also accepting donations in-store.
D.A.P. is thrilled with the commitment it has been receiving in making the “Stop
AIDS” part of the Walk’s slogan come to life. Community partners like AIDS
Assistance Program, the LGBT Community Center of the Desert, Mizell Senior
Center, Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, Desert Regional Medical Center, and
many more, along with D.A.P., have signed on to a coalition of community
partners called Get Tested Coachella Valley.
As it continues to unfold over the coming months, Get Tested Coachella Valley
will be the nation’s first-ever, region-wide campaign dedicated to dramatically
reducing transmission of HIV. To encourage the efforts of these community
partners, half of the net proceeds raised by each of these Walk partners will go
back to the coffers of their own organizations, while the other half will benefit
D.A.P.’s care, prevention, and advocacy efforts.
“In our valley, the prevalence of HIV is estimated at 67% higher than the national
average – which puts everyone at greater risk – especially when you consider that
nearly 70% of Coachella Valley residents have never been tested for HIV,” said
David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project. “We’re so gratified that essential
decision-makers and influencers have signed on to join our Walk and to Get
Tested Coachella Valley because the CDC estimates that approximately one in five
people living with HIV in the U.S. don’t know they are infected.”
The good news is that the journal Science hailed an international study as the
“2011 Breakthrough of the Year” when it proved that an individual who begins
taking the right medications soon after becoming HIV-positive is 96% less likely to
pass the virus to others. “Expect to hear a lot more about Get Tested Coachella
Valley from D.A.P. and the other coalition partners in the months to come,”
continued Brinkman. “But in the meantime, here’s hoping everyone will join us at
the Walk and continue to spread the word to ‘Walk – Get Tested – Stop AIDS.’”
TIGER’S PICTIONARY WEDNESDAYS AT # 1 FIFTH AVE:
Game Night is more then your typical board game, on the back patio at
#1 Fifth Ave. from 7:30pm - 10:00pm you can find Tiger doing what she
does best With one hand around the mic, and the other deep in the
“Tiger Bucket”, Tiger, Ms San Diego Leather 2010 pulls a bawdy and bizarre
collection of words and phrases for participants to draw, Her sharp wit,
semi gentle verbal slap downs, and self deprecating humor carries the
crowd through an evening of extreme fun and laughter. Tiger’s Pictionary
Wednesdays at #1 Fifth Avenue was born back in July of 2011 as an
impromptu event for a friends birthday.
It was an instant hit as other customers joined in on the fun a few days
later the bar asked if she would be interested in hosting it as a weekly event
and so the birth of Tiger’s Pictionary began at age 2 still going strong and
Growing. Working for our community she has raised over $10,000 for a
multitude of charties and organization, yes this is a fund-raising event but
you would not know it with the fun you will have New things to draw for in
the Tiger Bucket, and lots of great prizes to give away! as Sister Ida working
as Tigers Vanna Whiteface. All prizes are donated by local businesses to help
in this event this is not a one time shot Tiger is out every Wednesday. This
is a local community event and I can say 100% goes to Organizations such
as Special Delivery, Mama’s Kitchen, Aidswalk San Diego, SDSPI, The LGBT
Center, RompSD, The Leather Foundation, The Trevor Project ,Storefront
and many more.... Tiger has been volunteering her time and raising funds
for nearly 25 years in San Diego and throught Southern California, She has a
deep love for the Hillcrest area and San Diego and always gives back to her
community with time, money, and labor and I know that for a fact she has
helped me in several events the latest one was a Night of 41 Dresses of the
ICSD which was a success with her help as DJ Thank You.
A Quote from Tigers Poster “Fund raising filled with Insanity, Hilarity, and
a Massive Quantities of Impropriety!” So if you are up to a challenge pull
up a stool and order one of the Drink Specials and enjoy the evening with
friends and community I do have to say I have been to a few of these games
and the regular crowd is GOOD! #1 on Fifth Ave. is located at 3845 Fifth Ave.
DOWN THE RUNWAY AT 41 DRESSES:
Lights, Cameras, and Fashion was what you saw on September 21, 2013
at the San Diego LGBT Center when Night of 41 Dresses went down the
Runway with four decades of fashion, 41 Empresses of the Imperial Court
De San Diego included the Reigning Empress donated a dress from their
reign to be auctioned off for the programs of the Imperial Court of San
Diego. All though some of the Empresses were unable to donated there
was still a dress to represent their reign. First Emperor of San Diego Omar
carried out the first dress of his Empress Tawny Tann who is no longer with
us but in our hearts this was touching to see her Emperor walk her dress
down the runway knowing she would be proud, her dress did sell along
with many others. As each dress come out you can see the history unfold
before your eyes, the vision I had when crowned the 41 Elected Empress
was “A brighter future well Honoring the Past” and this show proved that,
AIDSWALK SAN DIEGO 2013:
What a women she is our Founder of San Diego Aids Walk Susan Jester, I
asked her what it was like in 1985 and who else could say it better then
Susan her self so here in her words Susan Jester.
“ First Walk was called San Diego Walks for Life in 1985 because we couldn’t
get people to write checks or hang a poster with the word AIDS on it.
First year was like being in a war zone A’s most people died within 6mo
of diagnosis... There was no medical or governmental help.. No Soc sec
disability ... And the public A’s well A’s our community were terrified A’s no
one knew exactly how the virus was transmitted... So original money raised
went for rent food funeral expenses and two main organizations called the
AIDS Assistance Fund and the San Diego AIDS Project.
I personally crossed out 265 names from my address book over a 3 yr period
all we did was help people die go to memorials and funerals. Unlike most
terminal diseases such A’s cancer, there was no compassion sympathy or
mercy for those infected. Families rejected their sons and would not pick up
bodies at the funeral home. So I started the walk to raise public awareness
and educate the public about their fears and to provide money for basic
necessities of life for sick people during their final days on earth. The Walk
turned the tide on public Awareness and helped change the perception
of people loving with HIV. There was no drugs at the time either so a
diagnosis in those days was a death sentence. Today we are blessed to have
government help and services and support A’s well A’s drugs that make living
with HiV a manageable life with a future and I’m sure it is difficult for people
today to imagine what it was like 28 yrs ago!”
There you go my readers that is why we walk today!
Party Lab Reopening Bash
photos:
John hedgeS
Party Lab, the coachella Valley’s
‘one-stop-shop’ for inspired party
creations, celebrated its transformation
into a D-i-Y event superstore
with a public bash to kick off Halloween
and cruise season.
The award-winning retailer now
hosts multiple vendors under one
roof to provide everything needed
to pull together an amazing do-ityourself
event. New vendors were
highlighted at the reopening party
including Depiction - a red-carpet
caliber photo booth experience, Dj
and dance floor by XiL Sound and
Lights, theme party ‘props’ supplied
by Signature Event Rentals, and catering by
crave with amazing desserts and cakes.
it was a fun-filled evening as the ‘mad scientists’ at the Lab provided
inspiration to transform your next party!
