MAXIMUM DIAMETER OF CALICE
FIG. 24. Scattergram showing the relationship between diameter of calice
and diameter of columella in Bathypsammia fallosocialis, B. tintinnabulum,
and Thecapsammia socialis. Crosses represent measurements on B. tintinnabulum
from V3-23; dots, measurements on B. fallosocialis from the same
locality; circles, measurements on the type of T. socialis. Measurements are
in millimeters.
not worn showed basal scars and tended towards a more trochoid form.
I believe both species are usually attached, although some free forms
may develop cornute coralla. The most significant feature is a rather
conspicuous difference in the relative sizes of the columella (see fig. 24).
Thecopsammia imperfecta Gravier, 1920, is clearly a member of the
genus Bathypsammia, judging from calicular details. It differs from
both B. tintinnabulum and B. fallosocialis in the character of the welldeveloped
costae and the development of the epitheca apparently on
only the upper margins of the calice.
OCCURRENCE: Recent: V3-23, off Florida; 686 meters.
