Intra-laminar: Within the laminae of a laminate.<br />

Discussion: describing objects (for example, voids), event (for example, fracture), or<br />

fields (for example, stress).<br />

Intra-ply Hybrid: A composite in which different materials are used within a specific layer or<br />

band.<br />

Intumescent: A fire-retardant technology which causes an otherwise flammable material to<br />

foam, forming an insulating barrier when exposed to heat.<br />

In-Situ: In the position which it will finally occupy, e.g. molding or forming foam.<br />

Irreversible: Chemical reactions that proceed in a single direction and are not capable of<br />

reversal (As applied to thermosetting resins).<br />

Isocyanate Plastics: Plastics based on resins made by the condensation of organic isocyanates<br />

with other compounds.<br />

ISO: Abbreviated terminology for the isophthalic acid type resins and gel coats.<br />

Isotropic -- Having uniform properties in all directions. The measured properties of an isotropic<br />

material are independent of the axis of testing.<br />

Isophthalic: A polyester resin based on isophthalic acid, generally higher in properties that a<br />

general purpose or orthothatic polyester resin.<br />

Izod Impact Test: A destructive test designed to determine the resistance of a plastic to the<br />

impact of a suddenly applied force.<br />

Jackstrawing: Prominence of fiberglass pattern having turned white in the Laminants<br />

because the glass has separated from the resin due to excessive exothermic heat usually<br />

associated with thick, resin rich Laminants.<br />

Jig: Any fixture for holding parts in position, while joining them together or to maintain their<br />

shape.<br />

Joint: A line or distinction formed when two panels are connected. It is also referred to as a<br />

seam.<br />

Jammed State: It is the state of a braided fabric under tension or compression where the<br />

deformation of the fabric is dominated by the deformation properties of the yarn.<br />

Kerf: The width of a cut made by a saw blade, torch, water jet, laser beam, etc.<br />

Kevlar: Trademark of DuPont for aramid fibers used as a reinforcement fiber.
