• ISO 15926 is a single standard to support. The questions of how input is received and how
output is to be made disappear.
• ISO 15926 already exists. A new data model for data storage does not have to be developed
from scratch.
RFID technology is getting less expensive over time and is showing up in new applications every
day. It is easy to imagine a future in which almost all objects have an RFID tag. It is a small
leap to imagine a manufacturer imbedding an “ISO 15926 identifier” in the tag that will automatically
link to all of the information about the component that had been publicized with ISO
15926 protocols. This could include:
• Material certificates and other information from the manufacturer
• Inspection certificates
• The purchasing information from the vendor that supplied it
• The construction planning information from the constructor that installed it
• A sound recording of the pump made during commissioning
• The specifications from the engineer that specified it
• Warehouse information for spare parts along with the GPS location of them
• Links to operations and maintenance data
This is different from reading a product serial number from a nameplate and then manually
searching on the manufacturer’s web site for product information. The ISO 15926 identifier will
link directly to the product information without the user having to know the manufacturer’s
name or be able to read a nameplate. This represents true integration of RFID information
(Figure 1.23).
