Principal’s Corner
Wow! What a mild and peaceful winter we
have had so far. I have to admit that I am still
hoping for a bit of real snow, and I know the
kids are too. It feels like it is almost time to
start training for our seventh annual 5K Race
and Fun Run. Be sure to save the date: May
4, 2013!
One question that I hear quite frequently is,
“When will Oak Hill be getting classroom
doors?” Great news! We are expecting door
installation to begin in late May/early June,
and it will not interfere with instructional time.
All classroom spaces will have locking doors to
open the 2013-14 school year!
Please be sure to mark your calendars for upcoming,
exciting family events focused on
curricular areas. On February 21 we will host
the Chinese Lantern Festival at school. Be
sure to come out and participate in many traditional
Chinese cultural activities for the
whole family. K-2 Family Math Night will be
held on Wednesday, February 27 from 5:30
p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the classrooms. Families
will participate in learning games and activities
that demonstrate how the children are
being taught mathematics. We hope to see
you there!
You are invited to join us on April 4!
PTA President’s Note
Spring is upon us! There are a lot of exciting
things in store for the PTA and Oak Hill this
spring, from upcoming events like the Lantern
Festival and Sixth Grade Basketball game, to
Staff Appreciation Week, to planting our spring
garden. Students will have a great deal of activity,
and we encourage each family to come out
and participate. We thank all the families who
attended the Spelling Bee and supported our
students. Congratulations to our winner Malavika
Pillai. What a great accomplishment!
In addition to these spring events, the PTA
team and Nominating Committee are in the
process of finding parents interested in participating
in the PTA Board for the coming
year. We look forward to putting together a
great team to support Oak Hill Elementary.
We invite you out to our upcoming PTA meetings,
where we will have some exciting presentations
in both April and May. Please watch for
updates in the KIT and the VFF for more details.
Thank you for all of your support. We hope
you have a wonderful spring.
-Sally Burns
The April PTA meeting will be held before dismissal at
2:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria on Thursday, April 4. Please
make note of the time. We will be discussing the use of
personal electronic devices in the classroom. Hope to
see you there!
Let Me Run
Volunteers Needed
Have you heard of “Girls on the Run?” Well, new to Oak Hill could be
“Let Me Run” specifically targeting fourth and fifth grade boys. We are
looking into introducing this program in the spring, and are in search of
some volunteers who would be interested in acting as coaches or assistant
coaches. The only requirement is a desire to inspire boys to be
themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle.
Training will be provided. If you are interested, please contact Julie Davis
at julescdavis@gmail.com.
Let Me Run is a non-profit prevention program aimed at strengthening
boys in body and spirit. The goal is to encourage boys to stay on track
to living to their full potential by inspiring healthy friend, family, and
community relationships. We use the power of running and lively
group activities to equip boys with tools to lead a balanced and fulfilling
life - emotionally, physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Our boys
feel the strength of being connected to others through positive communication
and team interaction. The program culminates with the
boys completing a community 5k run.
SEA Club
Save Endangered Animals Club
(SEA Club) had a great 13 week
session with second and third
grade members. Founder Prasidha
and the members met weekly
to learn about many endangered
animals and to work on
solutions to raise awareness.
The members made a contribution
to World Wildlife Federation
(WWF) by virtually adopting animals
in need of help. The WWF
was very impressed with the club
and its activities.
Original Works
Your very own artwork on products for you and your family
Our school has teamed up with Original Works to offer a very special
program. Original Works has been the number one art-based fundraiser
in the country for over 23 years. Your child will be creating his
or her artwork in school during the February/March GRACE Art session.
You will then have the opportunity to order a variety of great
items you can use, all professionally made and featuring your child’s
very own artwork. This includes many
neat products under $10.00!
The Original Works program is a great
way to:
• Celebrate your child’s creativity
• Order gifts for birthdays, anniversaries,
holidays, or any special occasion
• Have treasured keepsakes that last a
lifetime
Look for complete details coming home
soon. Additional program and product
information, as well as customer testimonials,
can be found online at
www.originalworks.com.
Members are sending a club
write-up to the WWF and hope it
will be published online at
www.WWF.org. All the members
also presented information about
an animal on WOAK.
Next Year: Research and Presentation
as SEA Club members
The club will, in its next session,
help students research the different
issues of interest and present
their findings in poster form. This
session will be open to all third
and fourth graders. Join the club
Thanks to all of the children, parents,
and teachers in our third grade, we
have had another outstanding and successful
month donating food to local
children in need! Thank you to our
wonderful parents for your plentiful
donations; without you, this program
couldn’t exist! We are warmly overwhelmed
by the generosity of our Oak
We are grateful to our caring and kind
children for their enthusiasm as they
participate in the ‘Kids Helping Kids’
program; they work very hard to get a
weekend’s worth of food into those
little bags!
Sorting all of the food items is a great
help. We appreciate the parents who
have spent part of their day with us:
grateful for that person.”
• “I’m glad that I helped. I would
help anyone.”
• “I feel like I am a good person because
I did something that will help
others.”
• “I feel great because they can play
sports and do whatever they want.”
• “I feel happy because the kids are
going to be happy too.”
his past, including the Russian countryside of his childhood home, celebrations,
Russian folklore, Jewish proverbs, family, and friends. His style of
art is similar to Surrealism and is called Fantastic art. He is known for the
Newbery and Caldecott Book
When looking for an exciting book
to read children, parents and educators
frequently browse library
shelves for the shiny silver or gold
The Caldecott Award is presented
Advanced Academic
Resource News
The Target is not the right answer, but a thoughtful one...
“So what is the answer?” came a voice from across the discussion circle.
“There isn’t a right answer,” I explained.
“But doesn’t that book give you the answers?” another chimed in, pointing to
the Teacher’s Guide on my lap.
Both the beauty and the challenge of getting kids to think critically and creatively
is to help them understand that the target is not the “right” answer, but a
thoughtful one. To equip our children and our students for the 21 st Century, it
is essential to shift our thinking as well. Oak Hill has been abuzz in the last
month with professional development for all our staff in several models, strategies,
and curriculum resources that will do just that.
Socratic Seminar is a powerful instructional strategy that is a catalyst for lively
discussion that leads to deeper understandings of issues, themes, and ideas.
Teachers in grades K through six have had two professional development opportunities
in the last month in the Socratic Seminar method. After attending
both trainings, classroom teachers and I spent a half day together planning their
integration of Socratic Seminars for third quarter.
The Jason Project is a National Geographic science curriculum endorsed by the
Advanced Academic Programs in which students approach authentic science
problems as practitioners. Oak Hill teachers in grades four through six have received
professional development in implementing this curriculum, both through
an in-house training on January 7 and at the AAP Winter Institute on January
29. I look forward to a half-day implementation planning session for third quarter
with fifth and sixth grade teams at the end of this week, and am thrilled with
the planning fourth grade and I did last week. Fourth grade students will “think
like scientists” as they incorporate Experimental Design in their science unit on
force and motion. They are also very excited to be integrating all students for a
culminating project to test the laws of motion. Students will design, build, and
then race cars in the first annual Oak Hill Derby. Look for that in the middle of
March!
Additional resources being implemented from the AAP curriculum frameworks
for third quarter include:
February
Chinese
Bulletin Board
This year, all first through sixth graders will
have Chinese! Each class will have two 30minute
Chinese lessons every week. This
year will be the first year that Chinese will
be on the report card!
February objectives for all the grades
are now posted on Blackboard under
“Course Information.” To help your child
review, everything that has been taught is
posted under “Course Material.”
The second graders did a little presentation
on the book they made. The video clips
are posted under “Course Material,” “2nd
Grade,” “Presentation.” Please find your
child's class then click on your child's name
to watch the video.
If you think your child needs extra help,
you can come to the Chinese office
(located in the third grade/fourth grade
pod) every Friday morning between 8:15
a.m. and 8:40 a.m.
If you are a new student, please visit
”Course Material,” “Review for New Students”
We have been celebrating
“Random Acts of Kindness” in
conjunction with Valentine’s
Day to highlight the importance
of spontaneous kindness. The
red hearts with the random acts
of kindness written on them are
displayed on the bulletin board
