emergency Preparedness
Are You and Your Family Prepared for Emergencies?
Frederick County’s emergency-preparedness partners encourage you to take the steps outlined below to ensure that you,
your family and workplace are ready to prevent and respond to an emergency.
Get Informed:
n Monitor changing weather and road conditions, and know when travel is unsafe.
n Read local newspapers and tune in to regional TV and radio news.
n Watch for official emergency messages communicated through the Emergency Alert System on WFMD 930 AM,
WFRE 99.9 FM, WAFY KEY 103.1 FM, Frederick County Government Cable Channel 19 and Frederick City Cable
Channel 99.
Make a Plan:
n Develop an emergency plan and discuss it with your family.
n Decide how you will find out if family members are safe and let them know you are okay.
n Plan alternative ways to communicate with family members and others in the event that routine communications are
disrupted.
n Plan for the possibility that you may need to leave your home: Know what you will need to take with you, steps to
secure your home before you leave and where you might go.
Build a Kit:
n Prepare a supply kit that will sustain you and your family for three days.
n Include the essentials: water, food, important documents and personal identification, warm clothing, blankets,
flashlight and radio with batteries, and medications.
n As you plan for your family, develop a plan and kit for your pet(s) as well.
Get Involved:
n Remember: Emergencies don’t seem as devastating when you have a support system.
n Get to know your residential and business neighbors, the people in your school and community groups, faith-based
congregation members and the parents of your child’s friends.
n Volunteer your time and services to organizations in Frederick County — at schools, with fire/rescue units, at the
hospital, through the Red Cross, organized blood drives and more.
