Equipment (PPE)
Certify your PPE products with BSI
Benchmark and get the stamp of Quality.
BSI’s Benchmark in Product Certification is the Australian Market
leader in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Certification.
Our local capability founded on the expertise and experience of our
people, together with BSI’s global reputation and globally recognized
and trusted certification marks create a compelling reason to use
BSI for all your PPE certification requirements.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE can be defined as ‘any device to be worn or held by users for
protection against one or more health and safety hazard’. It refers
to clothing, equipment or substances designed to be worn to
protect the user from risk of injury or illness. PPE manufacturers
must ensure their products conform to the relevant Australian, New
Zealand, European and International Standards, including CE
Marking or technical specifications in order to meet legislation
requirements. PPE can include:
Hearing protective devices, such as ear muffs and ear
plugs;
Respirators;
Eye and face protection such as safety helmets and
goggles;
Gloves and safety boots;
Harness and fall arrest devices; and
Clothing, such as high visibility vests or life jackets.
CE marking – PPE Directive
The majority of PPE products sold in the European
Union (EU) must bear the CE mark, the sign of
compliance to the EU Directive. BSI is a Notified
Body for CE marking and our experts can help you
gain fast and easier access into the European market by ensuring
your product meets the CE marking (CE mark) requirements. With
Notified Body status for many of the European Directives, BSI can
offer one of the most comprehensive CE Marking (CE Mark) testing
and certification services in the world and has a team of experts
who understand precisely what each Directive requires for each
product – to make your life easier.
Protective clothing is used in a wide variety of hazard scenarios,
such as extremes of temperature or chemical exposure. There are a
range of Standards designed to ensure product offerings suit
applicable conditions. BSI Benchmark can certify against the
following Standards: NFPA 1971 Protective Ensemble for Structural
fire fighting; NFPA 1977 Protective Clothing equipment for wild land
fire fighting; and AS 4967-Protective clothing for fire-fighters.
Impact Protection: Helmets Head protection covers a wide
range of products from a basic impact helmet - such as a cyclists, to
a highly sophisticated multi-function helmet with integrated
respiratory and communications equipment.
The introduction of more stringent Standards and improved testing
methods means that helmets are now more comfortable for the
wearer and are more hygienic. BSI Benchmark can certify against
the following Standards:
AS/NZS 1801 Occupational Protective Helmets (1, 2 & 3);
AS/NZS 1698 Motorcycle Helmets;
AS/NZS 2063 Bicycle Helmets;
AS/NZS 4067 Structural Fire Fighters Helmets;
AS/NZS 4499 Cricket Helmet and Faceguards;
AS/NZS 3838 Equestrian Helmets; and
AS/NZS 8600 All terrain Vehicle Helmets.
Protective Gloves are often an integral part of the required
personal protection kit box. Gloves can offer a far reaching level of
hazard protection from thermal, liquids, chemical, impact, biohazard
and general risks. Many gloves are designed to protect
against one specific type of hazard. For example, fire fighters gloves
are multi hazard resistant including additional protection against
upper hand impact and the inclusion of high visibility strips. BSI
Benchmark can certify against the following Standards: AS/NZS
2161 Occupational Protective Gloves; and ISO 15383 Protective
gloves for fire fighters.
Safety Footwear is vital to ensure that feet are adequately
protected against potential hazards whether on the construction
site, the motorway or at a house fire. Safety footwear also needs to
be functional, comfortable and durable. BSI Benchmark can certify
against the following Standards: AS/NZS 2210 Occupational
protective Footwear; ISO 20345 Personal protective equipmentsafety
footwear; and ISO 20346.
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are an essential part of
Marine safety equipment. A personal flotation device (PFD) provides
buoyancy to help you to float with your head above the water.
Recently there has been a change from three different Australian
Standards for PFDs to the one Standard which incorporates all PFD
types and buoyancy ratings. This Standard is, AS 4758.
High Visibility Clothing The standard for high visibility requires
that clothing must provide visibility of the user in a hazardous
situation under any light conditions. This is especially the case for
incidents on or near roads or motorways. Effective visibility is
provided by a fluorescent fabric and reflective stripes. BSI
Benchmark can certify against AS/NZS 4602 High Visibility Safety
Garments.
Hearing Protection Excessive noise is prevalent in many
industries as well as personal pursuits. Whatever the exposure,
noise can have a detrimental effect on the operator over time.
Earmuffs and earplugs are two such PPE devices used to protect
your hearing in noisy and hazardous environments.
Eye Protection Equipment is used in many situations from
industrial to recreational. In many instances the eye protection is
integrated into head protection. Many of these integrated systems
offer much more than eye protection, in that they protect the face
from impacts, sparks from cutting or welding gear or splashes from
molten metal’s or electrical arcs.
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) needs to offer
protection against a wide range of different hazards, such as smoke
and dust inhalation to vapours and oxygen deficiency. Respirators
reduce the level of exposure to or below that considered acceptable
by current standards. There are two types of respiratory protective
equipment - air purifying respirators and air supplying respirators.
BSI Benchmark can certify against the following Standards: AS/NZS
1715 Selection, use, maintenance of respiratory protective devices;
AS/NZS 1716 Respiratory protective devices; AS/NZS 1337 Eye
protectors for industrial applications; and AS /NZS 1270 Acoustic
hearing protectors.
Fall Arrest Equipment Many work and rescue situations involve
heights which require the use of fall arrest equipment. Such
situations can require the worker to work in a confined space or on
a natural hazard such as a cliff or high rise environment. BSI
Benchmark can certify against AS/NZS 1891 which covers the
selection requirements, safe use, and maintenance of industrial fallarrest
systems and devices
