Distracted Driving Awareness
Video Contest
Thursday night the Kent County Sheriff’s Department
awarded the winners of the Distracted Driving Awareness
Program.
The campaign challenges high school students at 22
schools to create public service announcements to encourage
people against texting and driving. The students
created merchandise designs, billboard designs,
along with radio and TV ads.
The winning merchandise will be mass produced, while
the winning audio and video will be broadcast on local
radio and television stations. The top billboard will be on
US-31 near Port Sheldon Road.
The presentation was at Northview High School in
Grand Rapids. Sponsors include Kool Toyota, Lamar
Outdoor Advertising, and FOX 17.
The winning TV ad was created by Mark VanBruggen
from Forest Hills Eastern High School and will air periodically
on FOX 17. It features two little girls in a toy car
race when one of them crashes because she is texting

Community Services
Forest Hills Public Schools Community Services is offering
over 50 different Summer Academy classes for students
ages Pre-K through Grade 12. Classes are in session
from June 18 – August 9, at Northern Trails 5/6.
Some of the classes offered are: Science Myth Busters,
Chemistry Concoctions, Dance Camp, Horse Camp, Seung-ni
Fitness, Mandarin Chinese, and many more! The

Eastern Orchestra News
Orchestra Concert
The final high school orchestra concert of the year is
scheduled for Wednesday, May 16. The concert will
start at 7:30 PM in the Eastern Auditorium. Students
will perform a wide variety of works ranging from
many popular pieces such as music from The Lion
King and E.T. The guest soloist will be Rudy Richter, a
junior oboist at Eastern. Come check out this free
event!
State Solo and Ensemble Festival
Congratulations are in order for those orchestra students
who participated in the State Solo and Ensemble
Festival. They are Vicki Lu, sophomore violinist,
Emma Richter, freshman violinist and Alex Ricther,
junior violinist. The students represented Eastern well
in this rigorous event all were awarded with the highest
honor of a Division I rating.
Volunteer at the Meijer Gardens
The Meijer Gardens is looking for outstanding students
entering 9 th to 12 th grade in the fall who might
be interested in applying for our summer PAL Partner
program in the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. Students
accepted into the program must be willing to
make a summer-long volunteer commitment and love
working with kids and families. They also must be
motivated, responsible and mature. The attached
flyer (pg.12) explains the specific requirements and
the application process. Applications are due by Friday,
May 11th.
