EASTERN EXPRESS<br />

Distracted Driving Awareness<br />

Video Contest<br />

Thursday night the Kent County Sheriff’s Department<br />

awarded the winners of the Distracted Driving Awareness<br />

Program.<br />

The campaign challenges high school students at 22<br />

schools to create public service announcements to encourage<br />

people against texting and driving. The students<br />

created merchandise designs, billboard designs,<br />

along with radio and TV ads.<br />

The winning merchandise will be mass produced, while<br />

the winning audio and video will be broadcast on local<br />

radio and television stations. The top billboard will be on<br />

US-31 near Port Sheldon Road.<br />

The presentation was at Northview High School in<br />

Grand Rapids. Sponsors include Kool Toyota, Lamar<br />

Outdoor Advertising, and FOX 17.<br />

The winning TV ad was created by Mark VanBruggen<br />

from <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> Eastern High School and will air periodically<br />

on FOX 17. It features two little girls in a toy car<br />

race when one of them crashes because she is texting<br />

Community Services<br />

<strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> Community Services is offering<br />

over 50 different Summer Academy classes for students<br />

ages Pre-K through Grade 12. Classes are in session<br />

from <strong>June</strong> 18 – August 9, at Northern Trails 5/6.<br />

Some of the classes offered are: Science Myth Busters,<br />

Chemistry Concoctions, Dance Camp, Horse Camp, Seung-ni<br />

Fitness, Mandarin Chinese, and many more! The<br />

Eastern Orchestra News<br />

Orchestra Concert<br />

The final high school orchestra concert of the year is<br />

scheduled for Wednesday, <strong>May</strong> 16. The concert will<br />

start at 7:30 PM in the Eastern Auditorium. Students<br />

will perform a wide variety of works ranging from<br />

many popular pieces such as music from The Lion<br />

King and E.T. The guest soloist will be Rudy Richter, a<br />

junior oboist at Eastern. Come check out this free<br />

event!<br />

State Solo and Ensemble Festival<br />

Congratulations are in order for those orchestra students<br />

who participated in the State Solo and Ensemble<br />

Festival. They are Vicki Lu, sophomore violinist,<br />

Emma Richter, freshman violinist and Alex Ricther,<br />

junior violinist. The students represented Eastern well<br />

in this rigorous event all were awarded with the highest<br />

honor of a Division I rating.<br />

Volunteer at the Meijer Gardens<br />

The Meijer Gardens is looking for outstanding students<br />

entering 9 th to 12 th grade in the fall who might<br />

be interested in applying for our summer PAL Partner<br />

program in the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. Students<br />

accepted into the program must be willing to<br />

make a summer-long volunteer commitment and love<br />

working with kids and families. They also must be<br />

motivated, responsible and mature. The attached<br />

flyer (pg.12) explains the specific requirements and<br />

the application process. Applications are due by Friday,<br />

<strong>May</strong> 11th.
