Lunch Debit Card End of Year
Information
In years past, when the school year ended, many students
owed money for overcharges on their debit card
account. The school district cannot carry negative
balances over the summer.
To avoid this situation, after May 1,2012 students will
only be allowed to use their debit cards if there is
enough in their account to cover the full amount of
their purchase. Otherwise, they will be given a cold
cheese sandwich meal. Money still in the account at
the end of the school year is carried over to the next
year, except for students leaving the district and
graduates. You may request a refund for any remaining
funds by submitting a letter requesting the refund
to the district’s Food Service Department, or have the
money transferred to a sibling’s account (by request
only). You may reach the Food Service department via
e-mail at:
dgraban@fhps.net or alarson@fhps.net.
Please keep a sufficient balance in your child’s account
to cover his/her lunches through the end of the school
year. Your help with this policy is greatly appreciated.
If you are unsure of your child’s debit card balance or
have any questions regarding the lunch program or
debit card system, please call the Food Service office
at 493-8774, e-mail us or go online at
Electronic Donations Needed
As the technology trends and abilities grow and change
we sometimes find ourselves not needing a device that
we used before. A perfect example of this is the smart
phone! Your phone might now be your device for communication,
entertainment, music, and photography!
The special education department at Eastern is looking
for used I-pod touch devices to aide students that need
assistance with reading the assigned texts for classes. If
you are willing to donate your old I-pod touch devices
please drop them off to the high school office. Our department
may be willing to offer some compensation for
the devices depending on the condition and size of the
memory card, please contact Carly VanWyngarden for
more information @ cvanwyng@fhps.us
Testing Out Information
Testing out is an opportunity for students to
Accelerate their curriculum. Students targeted are those
who find a particular subject easy and enjoyable, which
by testing out of a course gives them the opportunity to
move into a more challenging course in that subject.
Students must earn a minimum score of 77% to successfully
test out of a course. Due to the purpose/
philosophy of testing out, only credit is received (no letter
grade). The purpose is to meet the requirement of a
prerequisite and thus be able to move onto the next
course in the sequence or to retrieve lost credit from a
failed course. Students must apply to test out of
courses and may pick up the form in the Main Officer.
Forms are due May 24th. Study materials will be
available 2 weeks prior to the test date. There is
a $20.00 processing fee per test and a $50.00
refundable text book rental fee (returned after
book is returned)
TEST DATE: JUNE 21, 2012
TEST DATE: AUGUST 16, 2012
exhibit their unique styles in fashion. The fashion
industry is a huge draw for art students and they
love to design and perform in the show each year.
Although this year there were fewer designs the
quality of the outfits was the best ever!
Diversity Leadership
Exchange Lunch
The Diversity Leadership Students at Eastern High
School hosted an exchange luncheon with the ESL
(english as a second Language) students from Northern
on Wednesday, April 18th. The students created a
"getting to know you game" to use as an ice breaker
to create conversation and commonality amongst the
students, then they all had lunch together with selections
from our cafeteria. After lunch the Eastern students
paired up with the Northern students and
toured them around our school. The students came
away with appreciation of differences and shared interests
that helps all of us get better acquainted.
EASTERN EXPRESS
EHS Student honored by receiving the prestigious Roger B Chaffee Scholarship
Timothy Joel (TJ) DeVries dreams of using his exceptional
math and science abilities to solve a complex problem
that helps people. That desire is one of the reasons the
Forest Hills Eastern senior is this year’s recipient of the
prestigious Roger B. Chaffee Scholarship.The $2,500
scholarship is the oldest in the county, created in honor of
the Grand Rapids astronaut who died in the Apollo I
space capsule fire Jan. 27, 1967.
“I just want the scholarship committee to know how
thankful and honored I am,” said DeVries, 18, of Ada,
who plans to double major in mathematics and mechanical
engineering at Calvin College. “From what I’ve heard
and read, Mr. Chaffee was a really great person. This is a
humbling experience.” DeVries, the son of Joel and Michele
DeVries, was presented the award during a banquet
on Thursday, April 26th at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in
Belmont.
Robert Steelman, president of the Robert B. Chaffee
Scholarship Fund, said DeVries was one of 35 applicants.
He said every year members try to accomplish two things:
Celebrate the memory of Robert Chaffee, “a true hometown
hero” and help a scholar in the area of engineering,
mathematics and science.
DeVries, who has four younger siblings, said the money
will be helpful. He said he has a job in a dental office and
applied for a lot of scholarships because he knows “every
penny counts" and doesn't want to be saddled with loan
debt. He has received an additional $20,000 in scholarships.
Between credits earned from dual enrollment at Grand
Rapids Community College in physics and calculus and
high scores on AP exams, DeVries will save himself time
and money in college. He said he could have as many as
40 credits when he graduates. Steelman said the vast majority
of applicants have GPAs over a 4.0 because of advanced
placement classes and did very well on the ACT,
so teacher recommendations and the students extracurricular
activities help to narrow the field.
“His mathematical ability for a high school student is rare
and exceptional, and his humble nature is a real treat,”
said Don Tolly, who taught DeVries functions, statistics
and trigonometry (FST), pre-calculus and AP calculus his
first three years of high school, in his recommendation
letter.
“I am very confident he will become a college student
that does more than just take classes, he will use his talents
to contribute to the university and community of
which he is a part.”
More than his academic prowess, the maturity of DeVries,
willingness to tutor other students, helping the community
by volunteering such as at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum
and leadership qualities, are what resonated with the
committee. DeVries, who has a weighted GPA of 4.189,
finds time for various interests. He helped establish the
school’s drum-line and plays a variety of percussion instruments,
is a member of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony,
on the crew team and played basketball his first three
years at Eastern, to name a few of his multiple activities.
“We really look for a well-rounded person that has the ambition
to further themselves and wants to give back to the
community,” said Dale Young, the scholarship fund's historian
and Chaffee’s nephew.
DeVries said he's always had a passion for math and science.
"As a kid, I always dreamed of being an inventor
who would use math and science to help people and do a
lot for the world," DeVries said.
The Roger B. Chaffee Scholarship Fund was established by
Roger’s family and friends for students in the Kent Intermediate
School District. Chaffee graduated from Central
High School and was a graduate of Purdue University. The
Navy pilot was one of 14 men chosen in October 1963 to
be an astronaut. Along with Chaffee, his crewmates Virgil
"Gus" Grissom and Edward White II died in the 1967 fire
during the practice launch.
Besides for the scholarship, Chaffee is honored in Grand
Rapids with a planetarium and road named after him.
art, a scavenger hunt, bee hive observation, veggie toss, face
painting, etc. This year we also are bringing in "experts" to
do origami, balloon art and "Yoga in the Market" for moms
and kids. These activities need "hands on" guidance and supervision.
We are looking for high school students to fill this role as
volunteers. If interested, please contact Bob Kullgren at 616-
