In partnership with KPMG, the <strong>Sustainability</strong> Working<br />
Group conducted 22 reviews of operating companies<br />
in seven countries. Most progress had been made in<br />
profitable markets and health communities elements of<br />
the roadmap and UK companies tended to perform better<br />
(see Our sustainability vision and roadmap section).<br />
A plan for the professional services business was<br />
formally approved by the Parsons Brinckerhoff board<br />
in January 2012.<br />
Our operating companies developed core sustainability<br />
features for use on all bids and identified specific bids<br />
to target a leading sustainable approach as a way of<br />
differentiating our offering in the marketplace. Workshops<br />
were held in London and Atlanta to share knowledge and<br />
experience, including progress in the green industries sector<br />
(see our Growing our business in the green economy section).<br />
Over 17,000 employees completed our e-learning<br />
sustainability course and more than 8,000 completed<br />
off-line training.<br />
Nearly 30,000 employees (our office-based and supervisory<br />
roles) completed the Module 1 of the training. Module 2 was<br />
launched in late <strong>2011</strong> (see our Engaging our people section).<br />
Programme rolled-out to joint ventures and supply chain<br />
code of conduct issued (see our Ethics, values and<br />
compliance section).<br />
We report the number of calls to the ethics helpline.<br />
Other data is not considered sufficiently reliable or<br />
consistent for benchmarking purposes (see our Ethics,<br />
values and compliance section).<br />
The <strong>Sustainability</strong> Working Group started work with<br />
Forum for the Future to develop the new targets (see our<br />
Leadership, governance and risk management section).<br />
We reviewed our community programmes across the<br />
Group during the year but did not develop a specific<br />
measurement tool (see our Community engagement and<br />
investment section).<br />
Our UK businesses have adopted the Flexible Framework<br />
for responsible procurement. Training has been provided<br />
for our UK procurement managers and common tools and<br />
procedures shared across the Group (see our Supply chain<br />
section).<br />

These tools were developed and pilot tested by a<br />
number of operating companies to identify key areas<br />
of improvement (see our Health and safety section).<br />
We worked with the Environment Agency to upgrade their<br />
carbon calculator to apply to building projects as well as<br />
civils projects. We developed an adaptation framework<br />
and a suite of water footprinting tools (see our Creating<br />
infrastructure that is resilient to a changing climate section).<br />

Further reviews will be undertaken by KPMG<br />
to assess progress and completion of the 2012<br />
elements of the roadmap.<br />
Further plans are being implemented<br />
at operating company level in different<br />
geographies. The <strong>Sustainability</strong> Working<br />
Group will provide feedback on the plan.<br />
Further workshops will be held to examine<br />
the community dimension to work winning<br />
and a series of knowledge sharing WebEx<br />
sessions will be held for our business<br />
development teams.<br />
Our sustainability course will be rolled out<br />
to remaining employees over the year.<br />
Employees will complete module 2 of our<br />
code of conduct training.<br />
Module 2 of ethics programme will be rolled<br />
out for office-based/supervisory roles and as<br />
well as a course specific to site operatives.<br />
We will keep our data under review.<br />
Benchmarking, customer interviews and a<br />
series of workshops and consultations will<br />
be undertaken to develop the new targets<br />
for 2015 and published in 2012.<br />
We will re-visit the area of measurement as<br />
we roll out our new <strong>Balfour</strong> <strong>Beatty</strong> Building<br />
Better Futures campaign and report our<br />
findings in next year’s report.<br />
We will roll-out an e-learning course for key<br />
personnel who procure so they are able to do<br />
so responsibly. The new 2015 targets in our<br />
roadmap will extend responsible procurement<br />
further down our supply chain.<br />
We will provide training to our operating<br />
companies in our new climate change<br />
adaptation framework. Operating companies<br />
will feedback their experience using the carbon<br />
footprinting tools.<br />
