M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T
Well, I heard the weatherperson say that March went in like a lamb and out like a
lion. Who knows what April showers may bring – more sunshine than rain, I hope.
At our March meeting we enjoyed a lively question-and-answer session with speaker
Merritt Paulson, owner of the Portland Timbers and Portland Beavers. Special thanks
to Steve Babcock for asking good, probing questions. We also had an excellent
professional development session on Succession Planning for family businesses by
Eugene Wallace of Excell Oregon and Family Business Advisors. Our April 15 meeting
is sure to top that, when we will be having our Academic Night. Ray Davis, President
and CEO of Umpqua Holdings Corporation, will be our dinner speaker, and Bill
Douglas, President of Cost Advisors, will speak about Fraud in the Workplace for our
professional development session. Register here.
Academic Night
We are excited about our Academic Night on April 15, where in combination with our dinner meeting we
will be hosting five college juniors, all majoring in accounting or finance. They will be selected for a
chapter award of $1,500 each, one from each area university: University of Oregon, Oregon State
University, Portland State University, University of Portland, and Washington State University at
Vancouver. Robert Half Management Resources continues to be the sponsor of Academic Night, and we
truly appreciate its involvement and support. A special thank you to David Stubing, our Academic Night
Chairperson, who has coordinated this event.
Photographer
We annually ask a photographer to come and take photographs for Academic Night. All members are
encouraged to get a professional photograph taken to be put into our Membership Directory. If you
don’t yet have a photograph in the directory, please come to the April 15 meeting to get one taken. We
can also give you an electronic copy of your photograph so you can have it printed and framed to give to
your mother. (Mother’s Day is May 9!)
Combined Local and National Dues Billing in 2010-2011
You probably have wondered why you get invoiced twice a year, once for National dues and once for
local dues. This is because the National office bills you on your membership anniversary date and the
Portland Chapter bills you annually each summer for the current fiscal year ending June 30. The
Portland Chapter has decided to simplify our billing process to combine the dues for local and National
onto one invoice next year, on your anniversary date. To implement this change, there will be a onetime
stub period billing to pay your local dues from the July 1 fiscal year billing date to your anniversary
date. A full explanation of this change has recently been emailed to you and will also be included with
your stub period invoice. Thank you for your cooperation and payment during this billing transition. We
believe it will make it easier for you to get approval for payment just once each year instead of twice.
See you April 15 at our next meeting!
Best Regards,
Kyle Davidson, President
Portland Chapter, FEI

Dear FEI Portland Chapter Member:
M E M B E R S H I P N E W S !
Thank you for such a successful prospective membership mixer in March. We had seven first time
attendees:
Justin Sandall, CFO of Imperial Manufacturing; Jim Horswill, In-transition; Jeff Peterson, In-transition;
Sam Reinkensmeyer, CFO at gDiapers; Joel Richter, VP Finance of Pedigo Products; Donna Rocco,
Controller at Mercy Corps; and Jeff Stephens, CFO of Sabrix.
It is because of members like you that we continue to be one of the strongest chapters west of the
Mississippi. As we close in on the end of the FEI chapter year we need to make that extra push to start
off next year with even more members.
If you contacted a prospective member for the March meeting and they wanted to attend but couldn’t
make it, do invite them for April. One of the things I’m most proud of is the FEI Academic Night where
we recognize outstanding accounting and finance students from the universities in Oregon and southwest
Washington.
This is another great way to showcase FEI and the Portland Chapter’s local involvement. So if you’ve got
someone who would be a great addition to the chapter please ask them to attend the April 15 th meeting.
Time is running out so if you don’t do it now it might be too late for April.
Thanks again for your support,
Mark your calendars for our golf outing on Tuesday, June 8, at a golf course yet to
be determined. The format will be a scramble, so you don’t need to be a solid
golfer to have fun and win prizes. Plan to get there at noon for warm up and a
box lunch and our tee times will begin at 1:00. Cost will be $80 per person, which
includes the golf round, lunch and dinner, beverages, and prizes. You are welcome
to bring prospective members. Be looking for more details to follow.
C O M B I N E D D U E S B I L L I N G - W H A T I S I T ?
Dear Members,
The Portland Chapter is moving to a combined billing system for both National and local Chapter dues
effective with the 2010-11 Chapter renewals. Moving to this system administrated by Headquarters will
allow you to receive just ONE bill per year for both Chapter and National dues, as well as reduce the level
of local administration for the billing process.
Beginning next year, you will receive just one bill annually on your National anniversary date that will
cover both your National and your local Chapter dues. You will no longer receive a separate billing from
the local Chapter.
However, to move everyone on to this system, we must first 'true-up' your current Chapter memberships
to your National anniversary dates. This April you will receive a onetime invoice from Headquarters covering
the period from July 1, 2010 (our normal Chapter renewal date) to your National anniversary date. This invoice
covers just your local Chapter dues for this period and will be calculated based on the number of months
from July 1, 2010 to your anniversary date times $220 or $110 (depending upon your local Chapter
dues) divided by 12 months. The reason these bills are coming out in April is to give you 90 days notice
prior to the normal July 1 payment renewal date.
Still confused? Let's try an example!
National Anniversary Date - November
National Membership Year - November 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010
Chapter Membership Year - July 1 to June 30
Last Year: Chapter dues billed in June for July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010 = $220
National dues billed in August for November 1, 2009 through October 31, 2010 = $495
This Year: ONE TIME ONLY - Chapter dues billed in April 2010 for a stub period July 1 st 2010 to October
31st 2010 - 4 months ($220/12 months * 4 months) = $73.33. In August 2010, combined National and
Chapter dues billing sent for November 1, 2010 through October 31, 2011 = $715.
Next Year: Chapter and National dues billed together in August 2011 for November 1, 2011 through
October 31, 2012.
So please do not ignore the invoice you receive in April, as payment of this invoice will be required for you to
continue receiving access to the local Chapter after July 1, 2010.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact our Treasurer – Steve Peterman at
Mountainhawk82@aol.com or our President – Kyle Davidson at kmdavidson@stoel.com.
